I notice when I'm downloading torrents (right now at 40kb/sec)
My browsing pretty much rapidly slows down - even at 20kb/sec ....
Why would this be?

What do you have your torrents uploading at? Excessive upload speed will cause your browsing and download speeds to suffer dramatically.

Hah, I wish! I'm downloading at an average of 3kb/sec and getting a message about a uPnP device when I start azureus!

Probably because you have uPNP enabled in either Azureus or your modem/router but not in the other.

Well I had uPNP enabled in Azureus, now that I've disabled it my speeds are sitting about 7-10kb. A lot better than 3-5, but I guess the torrent itself has an effect on speeds. Are there any legit torrents out there that can be a reliable test of your bittorent download capability?

That will stop the uPNP error.

Try one of the more popular Linux distros. The live CDs for Fedora/Ubuntu/Knoppix usually have a very good seed to peer ratio.

Do you have your port forwarding setup correctly? Do you get green lights on NAT and on each torrent?

If you don't your setup is not correct.

You meant the lights beside each torrent? They're green with a smiley face. I believe I've got the ports forwarded correctly.
I've also reduced the maximum upload speed to 12kbps (512/128 connection) so it won't impact my download speed.

You could try downloading an openoffice.org torrent or a ubuntu DVD... Both max out the speed of my 8mb connection so you should have no worries.

I also find that uploading at any more than 28kb/s seems to significantly slow my 8mb connection down as well, so I have mine capped at 25kb/s

Cool I'll check it out, currently downloading a 4gb file that's taken about 3 weeks so far and is 76% done.

That is still way too high for a 512 connection. Check my linked post above for the starting values.

Edit : Presuming you meant 12kB/s not 12kbps.

Thanks! Wow, I just connected to the home PC and changed my max upload speed to 8, now I can see my downloads have jumped upto 18kB/sec and uploads have capped at 8kB/sec. Big improvement!

Big improvemen

you might also like to try reducing your uploads - look for a balance to share back and download quickly. If, for example, in your configuration you have maxed out your uploads this will interfere with your downloads

Yeah, I normally cbf moving completed downloads out of the share directory, so they get uploaded. I realised the other day I'd uploaded 8gb of a 6gb file during the 3 months it took me to download it :P.

That is a very good DL speed. I've been trying the past few days to download a torrent and even in the overnight/offpeak periods the torrents come "screaming in" at about 20 or so and varies widely.

I wonder WHY I cannot get faster downloads? Using uTorrent, share ratio 1.35, all setting checked and confirmed. Using Peer Guardian 2.

?? Is this ME or is this aaNet? What is the experience of others these days?

I had 4 torrents (fairly current and popular) on public trackers screaming down at ~400KB/s last night around dinner time.

I'd love to get 250kb/s! I used to max out my 1.5mbps connection when cat carrol was running the show. A bit over a year ago things went down hill. I have not had a torrent download quicker then 100kb/sec for over a year on a 8mbps connection.

I find it easy to max out my 1.5mbit on popular torrents.

I can get just over 400KB/s with 8000/384, but then I need to be using multiple popular torrents to do it.

getting to full speed as only happend with windows updates, even news groups have issues getting over 300KB/s

best average for a night was about 390KB/s for the 8 hours.

that was 2 weeks ago now (start of a new billing month).

took a while to share that one back (still going on some of it). It was mostly heavy seeded swarms for several anime eps.

Ive never had a problem with torrents on my 8mb connection. In fact, the other morning I was surprised to see 3 torrents running with a speed hovering around 800kb/s. Usually the maximum speed I get is around 650 - 700 with the average probably around 250kb/s.

Of course, a lot depends on the torrent and whether you are using a private or public tracker.
