Undoubtedly, the biggest announcement to have come out of Nintendo's E3 media briefing was the revelation of Wii Fit, a new compilation that's aimed at the health conscious consumer, which will come packaged with a new - and revolutionary - 'Balance Board' peripheral, which is essentially a pad resembling a household set of scales.

Wii Fit sees players stand on the pressure-sensitive, wireless Balance Board, which senses both their body mass index and their center of gravity, before discovering their Wii Fitness Age. A combination of fun aerobic, toning and balance activities are on offer, and one on-stage demonstration showed a player in the middle of a Yoga-like balance exercise, which had them standing on one leg and stretching. Another, more game-like activity, had players match the timing of the icons and the music.

Looks absolutley fantastic, even though it's barely a game, I think the casual gamers will lap this up.

meh. I'll stick with Kinetic on the PS2 - at least with EyeToy it can track your movements and coach you when necessary. You can also move away from the camera which increases the range of motion needed so ups the intensity - something you can't do if you're using the board.

The problem with kinetic is that by moving further away, or being in poorer lighting conditions, the program can't track you properly anyway. Anything which required a bit of finesse couldn't be done.

I wonder if these pads could be used, DDR style? ;)

i wonder how much weight that bored can actually support before it snaps.

Its a fitness type game so im assuming they had both larger people and thinner people in line when they designed it.

Im just curious to know how much it can withstand.

Dance Dance Revolution: Hottest Party is scheduled for a US 25th September release. It says it'll use the Wii Remote and Nunchuk in addition to the normal dance pad (which will utilise the GameCube Controller connectors).

No news on an Australian release.

Expect Mar 08 unless its huge in US in which case we may be delayed while they try to satisfy demand in US.

Seems it has 4 categories yoga, balance training, cardiovascular & muscle training and 9-15 activities in each category.

The whole point of it is to encourage you to exercise and monitor BMI scores for up to 8 people over time.

I think its a great idea and will be getting one for our family

Miyamoto: Wii Fit is Not Designed to Make You Fit

"I forgot to mention something important earlier: I don't think Wii Fit's purpose is to make you fit; what it's actually aiming to do is make you aware of your body," he said. "That's why we wanted people to talk with their families about Wii Fit, and become aware of these things together as a group. If you're standing still, and it tells you "Your body is swaying", you can see on the training results screen that your body has been shaking. But I think you'd never realize that your body is shaking in day-to-day life. I think becoming aware of things like this about yourself is quite interesting."

What exactly is the point?

Indeed, it was a good flood of new info/dates.

The Euro release of WiiWare will probably fall somewhere between the launch in Japan (March) and the Euro release of Brawl (June).

As for the price of Wii Fit, I'm estimating a similar price-point to Guitar Hero ($130-160)

Also worth noting is the balance board for the PAL release is now equipped to hold up to 150kgs.

Exactly what does WiiFit do?

I saw the video in an EB store the other day (hadn't bother to research it in the past)... and it seems like all you do is step/jump on a board.

Forgive me, but i'm not really seeing anything interesting in what appears to be a very simple sensor with only two sensing locations (opposed to something like a mat with 9 etc like used in those dance type games). Moving your feet in two simple tapping motions... not that appealing. Unless the board is sensitve enough and can be used for things like skate/snow/wake -boarding etc?

The whole board is covered in sensors i believe, as in it can tell what part of your feet is on the board and how much pressure is applied, so it can tell when your on the ball of your feet or standing flat.

This means yes it can do skate snowboarding stuff where your weight balances in different directions would move the board left and right. skiing is a mini game in the wiifit package which requires different amounts of pressure in each leg to ski.

As said above, it is a complex sensor which can indicate where you are applying pressure and recognise the slightest of changes in your stance.

There are various activities, some of which are more traditional exercise method e.g. the yoga and more game-like ones e.g. the soccer goalie or ski jump. The intention is to monitor and improve your fitness and from gaming website previews, it seems to indeed do this.

Unless the board is sensitve enough and can be used for things like skate/snow/wake -boarding etc?

The board is said to be used in at least 10 upcoming games from publishers, the next of which is "We Ski"

Sounds like WiiFit itself is pretty basic. I'm getting the picture its similar to WiiSports -- a basic showcase of what the product can do... and the follow up "full" games will really get involved and show it off?

Do you have a link?

Getting back to wife, I think all go with the yoga/pilates for her and getting fit for me. Should be good for the whole family.

Main way I see it is as a fun set of scales. It still encourages you to do other exercise but tracks changes in your BMI over time. Like that it tracks up to 8 people so you can do the whole family.

Will definitely be getting this. (Mario Kart on the other hand is just for the boys)

That means roughly 26,500kcal were burnt in 25 hours by standing on and off a board

Are you neglecting activities, such as the push-ups and jogging...?

I in no way would consider Wii Fit the solution to weight-loss, but it certainly does promote good health and as far as I'm concerned, that's a good thing, particularly if it translates from the game into people's everyday lives.

After reading this guys blog in Japan about weight loss and wii fit I have much greater faith in the product.

www.4colorrebellion.com/wii-fit

Plus, once it comes out in the US expect to see tons of blogs and comparisons of people working out to wii fit.

If you think the game is only a few low energy mini games please don't post till you've done some research.

And the reason the devs said it is not a weight loss machine was only to cover their asses when fatties who put nothing into it aren't shedding kgs.

You will lose weight(or slow down weight gain) if you keep your lifestyle the same but add some form of excercise(wii fit) to your life; you'll lose even more weight if you modify your diet for the better aswell. It's part of the laws of physics.

JB hi-fi is accepting pre-order for Wii Fit, and their staff said it will be sold below RRP $149 (but they are unsure about the final price).

The 4 color rebellion diary sold it for me. Although Vinnk only lost 5kg in 7 weeks, his build has improved dramatically and it really shows in the photos.

www.4colorrebellion.com/...ying-video-games

Personally I'm a busy and poor engineering student, I also work part time so I really can't be bothered with gyms. Jogging and other exercises bore me to death but I believe Wii Fit will keep me going. Mind you I'm not fat at all, just want to loose the last bit of flab on the belly and thighs.

EDIT: I believe JB are doing preorders for $134, which is well below RRP! Great deal.

Anyone know if any shops are doing trade-in pre-orders like EB with Mario Kart?

I will probably pre-order from JB if no deals come out in the mean time.

That only includes some sites + we want some retail info also.

I'd imagine Big W is probably going to have a good launch price.

It seems pre-ordering is the way to go guys, the game is already sold out in the UK and doesn't come out for 3 more weeks.

I used a voucher and managed to get it for $85 from Dstore.

I had a few of those old $10 vouchers from dstore (ones where you could use multiples) but I spend them all on HD-DVDs and sold them on ebay.

I still can't decide whether to grab this or not, but god knows how long the wait will be if I don't pre-order and decide I want it after all.

It'll be similar to the GHIII situation.

Yep, that's exactly what I'm worried about. Bugger it, I guess I may as well pre-order. I'm sure it won't be difficult to flog it off on ebay if it's not for me.

Cool! Could you also let us know whether the additional 3rd party accessories for Wii Fit are worth getting? (value wise and practicality). I'm interested in knowing whether things like the Wii Mat (the nice Green mat that Hori makes), anti slip coating and/or silicon Wii fit cover, are worth getting - as i've seen pictures of them selling where Wii Fit is sold.

I hear the green mat is actually quite good for it.

My JB (Civic, ACT) have put the RRP on my receipt.

They did my pre-order like a lay-by. Is that correct? I hope I don't miss out and get it on launch....

Do you guys think that there will be so much demand that pre-orders are actually necessary?

I've seen a lot of people pre-order games such as GT5P etc and now lots are pre ordering the new GTA.

In recent times, I've never really seen a shortage of games. However the wii system I have seen in shortage but that was the console itself and that was during last xmas.

I think wii fit will be very good. I get tired when playing the wii boxing in wii sports for a long time.

I'm guessing yes, but I could be wrong. It probably won't be too hard to pick it up on release withtout a pre-order, but I wouldn't be surprised if there's a major shortage and a major wait to get a copy if you miss out on the first batch.

I agree. It is a distinct possibility. Perhaps I will do a pre-order at my local EB if it is cheap enough.

Like I said above, yes it will be an issue. The difference is in the manufacturing, games like Guitar Hero and Wii Fit (and hardware also) that require a bundled peripheral take longer to manufacture than a disc in a case, thus why you very rarely see standard disc games sold out.

Its called the Wii Balance Board and its not sold separately. Although Japan/US hardware models may work with AU Wiis but you'd need the PAL/Freeloader to get WiiFit software to work

Interestly the US WiiFit bundle is US$99 compared to our AU$149 which isn't double the price some things have been lately.

Can someone tell me if this thing will actually be a serious contender to the common treadmill? Or would it be just as effective as the 'next big thing' from Danoz?

Basically, I'm interested because I regularly go for runs at night. Now that it's getting to the colder months i'm wondering if Wii Fit would offer comparable excersize.

He might be referring to the mat that goes underneath the balance board. I'm not sure if it's being sold here on launch or not.

I doubt that it would give you anywhere near as good a workout as a run would.

So basically the accuracy of labelling this thing a fitness device is about as misleading as candy that reads '99% fat free'?

Not once has Nintendo ever labelled Wii Fit as a fitness device. Only other people have said that.

Wii Sports != sports
WiiFit != fitness device

both=fun and require small - large amounts of exercise, which in turn burns energy; which may help you get fit, lose weight; when taking into account a balanced diet and other factors.

Just incase anyone didn't know, one of the first Wii-Fit training blogs (the guy lives in Japan) has finished with some pretty amazing results.

You can see the final results from 7 weeks training here...

No, my point was that it's not as beneficial as say traditional exercise like a treadmill, but it is still beneficial. IGN etc. said it does give you quite a workout.

2) What's the cheapest preorder? (JB HiFi is looking pretty good from here)
3) Are you excited?

a) The release date is 8th May 2008.

b) Cheapest pre-order is D-Store (Page 5)

c) Not particularly excited, more intrigued.

I've pre-ordered one from dstore as I had a credit with them. I'm not really expecting it to help me get fit or lose weight, but I do have hopes that we can use the games to help my son improve his balance. He is 5 and has very poor balance due to a congenital condition- he has only just, in the past month or so, learned to stand on one foot for a couple of seconds.

woah, that is not cool. I'd definitely keep track of how it goes via a diary or something and if it's a success let some gp's/media know. Could be really helpful to people.
