Why not Yahoo Hosting?

They seem big enough, and more reliable than these small web host companies which claim to be reliable.

any coments?

But are the prices ok?

Thats not always the way... Big hosts have more customers and tend to cram more on the servers to make more profit for their shareholders... in the end overloading servers and causing huge load times. So bigger is not always the best.

The bigger name the provider the less they really care about you. I have found smaller providers are more responsive in answering questions and are more personal; the larger companies put you in a long queue, and often treat you as a 'number'.

As with brand marketing, you generally pay more for the name/reputation, rather than the service or quality.

The main thread on Web Hosting has a lot of praise for smaller companies, so suggest you have a read to see what others think who have used both.

It's also about the level of service that smaller operators can offer. Try ringing Yahoo, and see if you get someone who remembers your name, remembers your website, and what you talked about the last time you spoke :)

and thats if you get the same person in the first place! :)

EDIT: its best to use a company whose specialty is hosting.

Also, go with someone who is big enough to be competitive and reliable, yet small enough to care.

That's not always that matters with Hosting. You'll probably talk to a customer service rep that they outsource or something like that, and you won't know them personally and... well, call times are a lot longer.

and more reliable than these small web host companies which claim to be reliable.

Not really. Smaller companies respond really quickly, because they don't have millions of customers to look after, so you can get a much better result faster.

I don't know about prices, but they're probably expensive. And I dont know where they are, but they're probably in America, which means going down for maintainance in their night time (our day time), and it will mean it's hard to get Customer Support when you need it most... Saying that, though, they may be based in Australia.

Big hosts don't know you, they just treat you as a name (or number) on a piece of paper. They don't remember you, whereas smaller hosts have personal service and are probably just as reliable.

Just checked their site, couldn't find anything that says they're in Australia. So here's some problems you'll probably find from them:

* They only have an American phone number.
* They are open from 6am to 6pm PST, that's 12 midday to 12 midnight I think. That might be okay.
* They charge by the month, For a 5GB allowance it's $11.95USD per month. That's about $143.40USD per year. Do you need to host that much? Do you want to pay that much?

Just a few thought. Don't forget the servers will most likely be down during our day time.

Edit: That's Sales that's open 6am to 6pm, support is 24 hours, although it will be a US phone number.

They're based in the US, not Australia.

Yahoo's web hosting does look pretty good and simple enough, it's expensive.

I am having second thoughts about it due to the cost.

I was going to sign up this week.

I thought it says on its site, someone got to be in the US as to sign up?

I don't see a problem of an Aussie to apply for it though.

I might just as well wait for a while to decide and consider for an Aussie host?

My email is based in LA, on rare occasions can be down late afternoon or evening our time.

Anyway, any Yahoo! member can create free webspace on his/her account.
