I just so happened to bump into this phone on the net 1 day after my old Sony Ericsson ran into some mishaps and wanted to buy it...but when does it come out in Australia? And does anybody know the approximate price?

No pricing info yet, all the info I can find says 'early July' so expect it soon-ish perhaps. Looks like a nice phone, I'll have to see it in person to decide if I'm going to get one or not.

very nice phone indeed and possibly the best feature being the twin screens.
it is based on the v6 design , but has apparently been strengthened with internal steel frame etc.
release date in oz? anyone's guess, but assuming it is similar to the v6, then there isn't too much new to challenge the tech police
august, september? let's hope

why don't telstra just come clean and announce about 5 new handsets to bolster their spindley next g line up? that'll give us all a boost;)

Aim for Mid-Late August.

The software basis is from the V6, the Hardware side is completely new.

It has a HUGE LCD on the front.

Awww....I don't wanna wait for that long...but I guess I have to. Do you think that I can get the phone for around $40 a month on a 24 month contract? Or would it be slightly more expensive?

hmmmm, ok, not really on subject and those tiny buttons are awful.
i don't think the lack of linux is going to kill the v9
i reckon the v9 will sell masses coz it has killer looks and is so much better than the current flippers from moto.

It's only a tactile feel so that you can use it without actually looking at the buttons. They aren't literally the buttons you have to press.

Not saying it will kill it, despite the dodgy menu, RAZR still sold like hot cakes. However for users like us here, who are more into technology than just the design, we'd love to see it run Linux OS and be able to multi task. But then again, i guess that's where N76 comes in.

tested the mp3 this morning on the bus, good but buttons are touchy on front screen

phone is bigger and heavier than would possibly like

as said in other thread , only one camera, if you want to see you as well as the other person when video calling you need to close the phone and use the exterior screen ( which was pointed out is why it is larger than normal )

a great looking phone but would like it more if it had some of the nokia (6120) gadgets in it

glad i didnt pay full price for it though, but will keep it for awhile

Thanks heaps. With your V9 I heard that you can read your messages on the front screen without opening the flip. Is this correct. Apparently it says this in the little starters guide you get with it - its one of the first paragraphs but havent heard that you can actually do that? Have you tried yet. Thanks

You can buy it outright from the Telstra Shop for around $800 but I think it will still have the logo on it and it may be still locked to Telstra. I was told that the Telstra shop get exclusively for 2 months before it goes to other retailers.

It's not locked to Telstra but without UMTS2100 support it won't do 3G on any other network in Australia.

You will however get 2G coverage.

Just thought I'd chime in on the v9. I got mine this Monday, and having been a Nokia user since forever, this phone is pretty damned good. There's a few quirks, but it's pretty solid and - dare I say it - very usable.

I too haven't figured out how to use messages on the touch screen - it says you can do it, the manual says refer to the Quick Start, the Quick Start has nothing about it at all. I think this must be a v8 feature, at least at present.

Other quirks and omissions, and thoughts that may have answers:

* When it goes to 'sleep' with white clock on black background, it doesn't show you if you've missed calls or messages. Would be useful.

* No icon at the top for missed calls, only messages. Missed calls are mashed into Received Calls, only with a different icon. Bearable, but a Missed Calls list would have been very useful.

* Had a weird thing where someone called me and left a voicemail. I got the message from Voicemail, but the phone did not mention there was a missed call after I'd dismissed the first message (it did list it in the received calls list as missed though). Tested a call and then SMS last night and it listed the call after the message, so I'm not sure what happened there.

* Phone keeps changing ringtone profiles when connected or disconnected from power or computer. Weird!

* No way on the phone to mass copy contacts to or from the SIM that I could find. Ended up using the PC software to transfer, fix up, delete and retransfer contacts.

* Not all text entries are set up with iTAP (predictive) and TAP (non-predictive) options to start with

* Dictionary learning is weird. Can't figure out how to teach it a new word except for spelling it via TAP entry, and even then it's automatic... wonder why there's no spell option?

Anyway, those are only moot points. Some could be solved by a firmware update, others I just live with :)

Overall though, the phone is pretty damned solid. I really like it.

Oh, and I hope that I can eventually figure out how to replace that bloody Telstra picture on the external screen when calling.

Hi DarkOwl, just a few things to help you. I have had the motorola V3 for ages and it always showed the M (motorola) sign on the front flip and I could never get rid of it either and it looks like this one might be the same. We are stuck with Telstra signage.

* When it goes to 'sleep' with white clock on black background, it doesn't show you if you've missed calls or messages. Would be useful

With regards to when your phone goes to sleep. There are two things that help. Firstly, if you miss a call or a text your phone will send you a reminder ring every six minutes until you open the flip. In settings you can change what tone you get.

Secondly, if your phone has gone to sleep and you dont no if you've missed calls or messages just push the bottom button on the left hand side of the phone and it will say '1 missed call' or '1 new message'. (Do this without opening the flip). Then you can press the same button again to unlock the screen and it will show you who call was from. (Still haven't worked out how to read a message on front flip).

Phone keeps changing ringtone profiles when connected or disconnected from power or computer. Weird!

This is perfectly normal. When you plug your phone in to charge it will automatically change to 'Loud' and if it rings while it is on charge it will ring with the preset tone for that setting, but as soon as you unplug it from charge it will revert back to your chosen settings.

No way on the phone to mass copy contacts to or from the SIM that I could find. Ended up using the PC software to transfer, fix up, delete and retransfer contacts.

With mass copying I think all you need to do is mark everything you want to copy first and then it will copy all as I did this when I copied all my contact from my V3 to my V9. It only took a minute. I would have gone crazy if I had had to do them individually.

Dictionary learning is weird. Can't figure out how to teach it a new word except for spelling it via TAP entry, and even then it's automatic... wonder why there's no spell option?

Yes dictionary learning is definitely weird but this dictionary is soooooo much better than the V3. That was a nightmare learning to use and this pales in comparison but it is VERY different from the Nokias.

I hope some of this helps you with those problems and if you eventually work out the message reading on the outside flip I would be most interested.

You guys can stop trying to read messages from the front flip. It doesn't have this feature. That feature is part of the V8 series (whole new OS).

As for the dictionary, start typing, once it gets to a stage where it can no longer continue. (ie. try teaching it Google) do the letters for Goo, press down until it appears as go, then press g, press down until it hits g, then do the letters for le, scroll down until it does le and it will now have learnt Google.

Just saw it in a Harvey Norman Catalogue,

It is $0 upfront on a $60 Telstra phone plan.
The plan is of course over 24 months, with a minimum cost of $1440 plus additional data and early exit fees do apply, what more could we expect from Telstra?

This is going back a while.... using the USB data cable and a small program I downloaded called "P2KTools" and the file is called "cl.gif"

The one you replace it with has to be below a certain size, both in kilobytes and I *think* 76x76 pixels.

I found this forum to be useful:

www.howardforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=101

It'll be in there somewhere, but you are looking for a file called cl.gif

Good luck and don't try and update the flash / flex of your phone, I almost killed mine in the process.

Edit: My V8 should be here next week so let me know what you find!!

To get the back cover off, you just need to push it up (towards the hinge). It's just held in by force, as far as I can tell.

Also, I got rid of the ugly arsed Telstra logo on the outer screen. Here's how (and you do so at your own risk, naturally):

* Grab a copy of your favourite P2K program. I used P2K Commander 4.9D. It's hideously slow and unstable if you poke it whilst it's thinking, but it got the job done.

* With the phone connected and the P2K software loaded (I'd also previously installed the Motorola software from the included CD, which had drivers, before I connected for the first time), navigate to the A folder (phone), then the Phone folder inside that, if I remember rightly. Be patient whilst it retrieves a list of files. P2K Commander crashed on me if I dismissed the message that comes up.

* Select the cl.gif file from the list, and download it (if you want to back it up). I renamed mine cl-telstra.gif once it was on my computer, and then I put it back on the phone for safekeeping.

* Create your own 240x320 GIF file, call it cl.gif

* Delete the cl.gif on the phone

* Copy your new one across

* Restart the phone

Et voila, no more glowing advertisements for Telstra :) Well, except for the screen printed logo on the backplate, but that's less attention-seeking.

I also have a few more questions for people who have the V9...

I used to have a motorola clamshell it was the black one that looked kinda like a bubble lol can't remember the model number at the moment, the thing that annoyed me the most about it was the delay between when i pressed a button to when the phone reacted just wondering if the V9 does the same thing cos i have heard they improved the reaction time.

Also, am i able to install software on the V9? like my current phone is an N73 and i have a program on it that allows me to set as many alarms as i want which is quite handy, and if i get the V9 i would probably try to find an application that does something similar.

I'm also curious to know from the people who own one, on a scale from 1 - 10 how do you rate it and what are your pros and cons?

If you don't want to clutter this forum with your replies please whim them to me.

Thanks guys.

Hi Nokism. I got the V9 1 week ago after upgrading from the original V3. I am very happy with it. The response time when you hit a key is immediate. To log onto internet, bigpond etc. is extremely fast - much better than V3. The only thing I find is missing is its a shame there is no radio in it. Its not really a feature I use alot but my husband loves having a radio in his mobile phone. Its much easier to see the time when the flip is closed and the screen has shut down as the numbers are huge and stand out even without being lit up. It is easy to transfer ring tones, songs, pictures etc and the screen quality is excellent. The feature of being able to listen to music without opening the flip is great. There are a couple of things in the instruction book that it doesnt do which is a shame but all in all I am very happy.

The v9 has native support for multiple alarms :)

I'd give it a solid 8.5 out of 10. It's a pity that it's not the new OS or UI as per the Razr2 v8, it has a few 'missing' features such as external screen SMS replies and so on... which is a real shame. But it is fast, and very responsive. Something that Nokia's new E and N series phones could learn from...

There's a few bits that are niggly, and many bits that are pure awesome.

The finger-print absorbing shell gives obsessive compulsives something to do, too :)

Overall though, having used it for ~a week so far, very happy with it.

The v9 is. The v9m is not, at least not unless it's being imported.

Also, I don't think you specify a favourite number - it just remembers the last dialled. Might be wrong though.

Show me a V9 that uses the CDMA network in Australia and I'll have your children.

Wait, no I won't. CDMA is inferior.

And what's the use of getting a CDMA phone here, seeing as the CDMA network will be closing start of next year?

Has anyone made a side-by-side comparison between the Nokia 6120 and Moto V9?

These 2 seem to be the only viable Next G phones at the moment. I'm leaning towards the V9 as the 6120 looks like a cheap piece of crap with small buttons I can't use. Pity, I've had 4 Nokia's in the past and didn't think I'd go for a different brand.

I can't say I've used the 6120, but if it's anything like the current Nokia range, it's pretty bulky (seems about the same size as an E65) and laggy.

My previous phone was a 7270, before that a 6100, 8250 and 6150. So yeah, I was apprehensive about getting a Motorola because I've never been a fan of their UI. But it's actually pretty good. A few things are a bit odd (or not there), but nothing is a show stopper.

Hi Lauzzie, Sorry for delay in response. When you have a missed call it shows you the number when you click the button on the lh side of phone with the flip closed

HACKERMAN, to flick through music from front screen of V9:

You press the smart key down to unlock external keys.

Press smart key again and it will put the menu on screen. To glide up and down menu press top 2 buttons, use smart key again to select.

I choose songs and then you flick through music using the front screen touch buttons. Easy once you have done it once Hackerman :)

Hi Guys. Another question about the V9. Has anyone figured out how to make it ring for more than 15 seconds before it goes to message bank. On the Nokias you used to be able to set how long it rang for before it diverted and I am sure my Motorola V3 rang for longer than this. Please help as 15 seconds isnt always long enough for me to get to the phone.

I think you call Telstra to set the diversion time. I use to work for an Optus mobile network and we use to change customer diversions. 30 secs was the max for us but Telstra may be different.

Hi Nokism. I got the V9 1 week ago after upgrading from the original V3.

Is the software (for your PC) better than the terrible thing that came with the V3, or is it just an "updated" version?

Hey there,

If you input *61*101**30# then hit the call button, the ringtime will extend to the network maximum (in theory, about 30 seconds). This is for Telstra mobiles - but substitute 101 for 321 on Optus, 121 on Vodafone or 333 on 3 and you'll get the same result! And it saves a nice long call to customer service. :-)P

Alt just change the call divert settings in your phone's call setting menu. I blieve its No Reply (can't remember atm) that sets the time to divert

Would other V9 owners please tell me whether the reminder 'Beep' the phone makes if you ignore a message or missed call is a short loud beep sound (like every other Razr I've ever owned). My V9 is making a barely audible little blip, which is quite useless.

Hello, can either of you tell me about the PC software that came with your V9? Is it an updated version of the crappy V3 software, or a completely new program?

Cheers,

Hi everyone. I figured out how to make the phone ring for more than the preset 15 seconds. For anyone thats interested:
Go to Settings / Call Diverts / Voice Calls.
On Voice calls hit the right hand arrow key and you will see all the call details. Scroll down to time delay and you set it from anywhere between 5 seconds and 30 seconds. Thanks for all the help.

It's an updated version of the old Motorola Phone Tools software. It's better than it used to be, but can still be a little 'twitchy'. I only use it sync my Outlook Calendar and backup my phonebook and it does that well enough.

The v9 is currently Telstra only and comes in a sort of dark slate grey (not the red as you see for the US AT&T model). That is the only colour here, unless sourced from an overseas seller.

Yeah, how do you change it? In ring style details, you can only make the Reminders "Beep", "Vibrate" or "Off". I can't find any way of actually assigning it a sound.

The interface is virtually identical to the V3xx. I've had a V3, V3i and V3xx and this is the best of the lot - apart from my ongoing issue with the reminder Beep.

Hi everyone. I have just made an interesting discovery quite by accident. I have also been putting up with the pathetic 'Beep' sound the phone makes for reminders. I have always had my phone set on Vibrate & Ring but today I changed it to loud and even though in the settings the reminder is still set to beep, when it actually plays it is extremely loud. I then tried it on Vibrate then Ring and it gives you a different sound again. To test just ring yourself with your home phone and dont answer it and wait 6 minutes to see if you get different alerts to. Let me know if its the same.

Also got the phone last week. Upgraded from a V3 when it first came out. I'm loving the V9 except for the dirty finger marks left on it.

Thanks to everyone on providing the tips on removing the telstra pic, and extending the divert timer. Very handy :)

Hi Raima. Did the tips for removing the Telstra Pic work and was it difficult. I havent attempted it yet because I am afraid of doing something to stuff up the phone. Did you just replace the Telstra pic with a picture you liked or do you have to leave it blank.

hi guys,

got my v9 last week and loving it. my biggest problem is getting emails to send out through the phone. i configured my email account manually with my mail server and used mail.bigpond.com as the outgoing server but cannot seem to get a connection (i get some connection error). i can receive mail fine, just not send. i would use mye own mail server for outgoing messages if i could find an outgoing authentication section in the phone... seems kind of silly hey?

let me know if of you guys have any luck?!!

cheers guys,

Yep. It's not that difficult. Just follow the instructions earlier on in this thread or check the Motorola Modding threads on howardforums.com. There's an extensive thread on modding the V3xx which I used to get rid of all the Vodafone crap of my V3xx. It was the same procedure for the V9.

Interesting. Mine is the same. When it's set to Loud, the reminder 'Beep' is the 'Alert' sound. When it's back on Vibe & Ring, the reminder 'Beep' is the pitiful blip I've been complaining about. I've already taken one phone back because of this. I'm beginning to think it's just the way they are.

Yep. I'm quite happily using my own logo now. I've also killed the Telstra Next G animations when booting up or powering down, in favour of a simple Motorola logo as I couldn't think of anything useful to put there. At least it's not Telstra ;)

I posted instructions about how it worked for me a few pages back in this thread. Just be patient with the software's slowness and you should be fine.

Now the only Telstra bits left on my phone are the T logo on the backplate and the T button on the keypad. I wonder if it's possible to get official backplates sans logo? Hmm...

Not at this stage. But it -is- a three G handset. Telstra have just removed the 2100mhz option from the phone, the same as they have done with the V3xx and V6.

Ever notice how you can buy a V3xx from other carriers, and it does have 3G? That's because the phones hardware supports both 2100mhz and 850mhz. Telstra just disable the 2100mhz in favour of their NextG band, 850mhz.

NOT the GSM bands. The UMTS bands.

As for using a bluetooth modem, if you use Motorola Phone Tools set up with BT, then you should be able to fairly easily use it as a modem. It will make the dialup profile for you, and you can just click to connect.

Don't bother trying this with Vista though. Vista's bluetooth is horribly broken and doesn't work properly with this kind of connection.

Telstra have an exclusive distribution arrangement with Motorola, meaning that you won't find it anywhere else in Australia for the first few months.

Give it a while - it's a great phone, I'm sure the others will pick it up eventually.

I bet you are just roaming on GSM. Because (from memory) 2100mhz UMTS is removed from the phone via software.

And btw... I get this info because I work in the support centre for Motorola AU and NZ.

OK, I've asked this question elsewhere and didn't get an answer. Is the phone physically capable of 2100? There is a SEEM edit to show 2100 in the available network list, but will this actually get it operating on 2100?

Yes. Australia uses a different set of networks than America. We don't touch the WCDMA 1900 band.. If you can seem edit this, PM me the details. I don't get passed anything interesting, and have to find stuff myself..

It should be able to use 2100mhz. The V6 from Optus can handle 2100mhz, but not 850mhz. All these handsets can be reflashed to other firmware, which gives you the ability to use whichever network you like. It's just Telstra's dodgy firmware that stops us using 2100mhz. All handsets that come into the country come through one place. Physically, and internally, the V6 you buy from optus is identical to the one you buy from Telstra. Just different software.

It might be possible with a software upgrade down the track - who knows. But for the time being Motorola are stating that it doesn't come from the factory with support for 2100.
