Aris3G, it would be easier to just order the replacement parts from blueunplugged.com (www.blueunplugged.com/do...chterms=N95+sand). They are official Nokia replacement parts and extremely easy to put on. I personally got the Warm Graphite parts months back and they look fantastic on my n95.

The maps for NZ are available as i have downloaded them, they shouldn't take too long as they are around 6Mb

Say if I wanted to change it to graphite, which parts do I need?

Do I just need to buy this:
www.blueunplugged.com/p.aspx?p=120219

or are there other parts I need to buy in conjunction with this?

EDIT: Nevermind. Found out the package included
* Nokia N95 Back Cover - Warm Graphite
* Nokia N95 Battery Cover - Warm Graphite
* Nokia N95 MicroSD Memory Card Door - Warm Graphite

Looks like thats the only part you need. When I ordered it it was two parts, the back and the battery cover.

Use the Nokia Map Uploader to download the maps from Nokia and then upload them to your phone, that is what it is for. Make sure you get the latest version of the Map Uploader, apparently it is now considerably quicker at downloading the maps

Given the size disparity of the maps for with lots of detail and navigation (ie, Australia and Singapore), versus the size of the New Zealand maps - which have no navigation or search available - I think that there is minimal detail on the NZ downloaded maps. The same thing occurs for other SE Asian countries I travelled to last month (about 6MB map files, but no detail).

Get the mobile divx player and use the divx converter.. simple and pain free.. only catch is that you have to use the divx app to play the vids (pretty good app though, will play in landscape mode too)

Guys something I thought you might be interested in...

I was in Helsinki, Finland (home of Nokia) on Friday.

Played with N95, E90, N76, N77 (& N92) as well as the 6110 Navigator.

The N95's there were over €1000 not including tax!

And the slider was wobbly!

Hi guys,

I've been encoding some XViD's at 320x240 resolution especially for the N95 but the seem to play in perfect sync on my PC in Media Player 10 but always need about 0.3 secs preroll in smartmovie to get the audio in sync.

This also is required for playback in DivX player 0.88

So what's happening? It the N95 known for this or is it a symbian issue?

Cheers

using XViD and auto GK. Seems better when using constant bit rate for audio but still always a bit out.

On my handset it's like this:

-> Settings (hopefully you can find this!)
-> "General" is the top icon in settings.
-> "Personalisation" is the top icon under General (Icon looks like two faces).
-> "Languages" is the fifth option under Personalisation.
-> "Phone language" is the top option under personalisation... you should see English there if it's one of your phones options.

Hope that helps!

if you're looking at getting a phone upgrade with three I suggest you call them up and get one delivered straight to your house, it'll be 1/10th of the time that it takes to get one in store. I ordered mine last thursday and it came in yesterday. So only 3 business days it took to get delivered :)

You don't need to purchase the Memory Card Door. It's included with the Back Cover (well, for me it did anyway!). But if you don't get it with the Back Cover, just whim me as I've got a spare one here - the one I didn't need to order!

I too am having trouble converting videos to watch on the N95. I originally tried watching movies I had converted for my Ipod (320x240) but the N95 could not handle it at all ! The movie was all jittery and would constantly pause and restart.

I then tried to reduce the quality and bit rate etc on Videora but then the whole movie sped up when playing it.

If anyone has any instructions on the best way to convert movies, setting and programs they have used I would very much appreciate it. I was planning on using DVD Shrink and then Videora. What are other people using and what settings?

Also, I have downloaded DivX Player 0.88. Are there any easy means to convert movies into DivX and watch them on the N95. Is that easier than converting to MP4?

Cheer.

Hey all,

Got mine the other day.

Screen locks when returning to the main menu pretty often, requiring a power off/on to get it working again.

Have flashed to latest firmware and no change.

Have done a hard reset and no change.

Any ideas before I take it back to swap over?

edit: have turned off power save in wifi - still happens.

Thing is though... does the 6680 have in-built GPS? Correct me if i'm wrong but I don't think it has. Therefore he may have used Bluetooth GPS.

Now if he's comparing bluetooth GPS with the N95's inbuilt GPS, that's not comparing apples with apples because obviously, ANY bluetooth GPS device that's SIRF3 and capable of seeing a kajillion satellites (instead of the N95's 5) with very high baud speeds and fast correction will outperform the N95's in-built GPS.

When I had my N80 hooked up to a Bluetooth GPS, it was much smooth than my N95, but when I paired my N95 to the same device, the N95 was a lot smoother...

Ahh ok, well in that case I concede you are right, that shouldn't make a difference, where in this case it has.

Maybe the variables are different, i'm running a Sandisk ultra 3, its supposed to be a very fast card, could that be why?

I have also noticed, formatting a card in FAT32 literally doubles the read times on these cards because of ther larger overhead...?

Has anyone else had problems with the microphone part of the phone, unless its a faulty batch.

About to get my 3rd phone, both previous phones dying out with the same problem, mind you everything else works fine.

I've got them from Strathfield...different stores in different states...because Optus World has a different computer system it won't accept the IEMI in their system because apparently it doesn't exist. So therefore I have to go back to strathfield to sort out the problem...

The divx codec bundle you download from their site (for your desktop) should have an option for you to install a converter. Pretty simple process of a drag and drop function. Once you're done, transfer it to your phone.

I uploaded a few episodes of the simpsons onto the phone and I get constant syncing issues as well.

But the movies I manually converted into divx seem to work fine. So I don't think it's a symbian issue, might be something to do with xvid.

It was the DivX converter that came with the codec (i.e. developed by Divx). I think there are some settings, but I don't know them off the top of my head sorry.

It'll churn it out as "filename.divx" but should play in most players (and in this case, it'll play on ur mobile divx player)

Has anyone else had problems with the microphone part of the phone, unless its a faulty batch.

Okay, I remember trying to figure out when the phone was manufactured. I remembered telling everyone to try *#0000# and tell me the date, but that date obviously refers to the date of the firmware, not the phone.

So i've found another (roundabout) way of finding out the year & month the parts of the phone was manufactured (and if turnaround is quick, maybe even assembled) without pulling the phone apart.

Basically look at the date stamp that is stamped onto the plastic pieces. Without taking the phone apart, there are two places to look;

1) On the inside of the battery cover there is a circle with the year '07' in the middle and an arrow will point to a number between 1 - 12, in my case it points to 3, so this tells me the battery cover was manufactured in March 2007.

2) The other place to look is when you remove the battery cover & battery, and look at the bottom end of the phone, there are two holes. The hole with the white plastic has another one of these date stamps on it, in my case this was also March 2007.

So NOW.... i am wondering, if everyone could do this, i'd be interested to finding out whether/possibly the phones that were manufactured earlier or within this same month may have had more build quality issues than later dates?

This theory could be blown out of the water again but I'd just be interested in knowing.

My details:
Plum N95, Battery Cover & Phone manufactured in March 2007
Phone purchased from Optus World, V11 firmware already installed.
'Tapping' slider on the bottom right is the only build quality issue, otherwise flawless.

Maybe a repeated question, but is there a way to manually lock the keys? When in the pocket the slider seems to be able to move enough to unlock the keys and allow calls. Is there away to prevent opening the slider from unlocking the keys?

Even though I cannot find these date stamps probably due to my horrendous eyesight. My guess is that all handsets have been the exact same build date and the only thing that has changed is Optus have updated the firmware.

I am on my fourth handset through Optus the first 2 had the buzzing sound really bad and were v10 firmware. The third handset was also v10 and still had the buzzing but not as badly, however the slider was very loose. The fourth handset which I still have and am considering what to do with (cancel contract/try again) is the first of v11 I have received and it is buzzing worse than the other 3 put together.

Caustic

After checking my N95 the details are the same as yours 07 with an arrow pointing to 3. I purchased my phone from 3, again Plum with V11 firmware already installed, I would consider mine almost flawless, no real apparent slider issues but a faint hiss when listening to the music player via headphones.

I would be interested in the results of your theory as I seem to confirm it so far.

Yeah that one is harder to look at, i had to used a bright torch.

The only reason why I ask to compare both dates is to also due to the possibility that both these parts may not be manufactured in the same factory, or at the same time.

Like I said, this is not a surefire way of finding out the manufacturing time of your phone but at least it would give you a sniff of an idea when some of these parts were made, and assuming that the factory that makes these parts also assembles them or has a quick turnaround to provide these parts to the factory that assembles them, then it could provide some indication when the phone was made or which batch it belonged to...

V11.0.026

Dates on mine: Battery Cover - 04/07
White plastic @ end of phone - just has 07 in a sun (circle with dashes around it)
and there is a date on the underside of the metal flap that holds the sim card which has 03/07 in it.

2nd exchange at Harvey Norman. Very quiet buzz, very wobbly slider.

As per most on the list, I know it has mentioned over and over, BUT....... trying to find it!

I just tried to update the firmware via Nokia suite , it is telling me that Version 10 is the newest and says the phone is up to date, however everyone raves about version 11

Is there a better way to download it? Mind you the phone is fine, I don't have any of the buzzes or faults - is it better to just wait ????????

Cheers

2 gig card from DSE:

I recevied the 2G card from DSE with my phone- free ;-) so started using the 2G card instead of the 1G card that Nokia supplied. I found that the 2G card would not write videos correctly and they were jumping all over the place. I posted a query on this discussion group about this issue somewhere in Part 7. I figured out that it was the 2G card's ability to record the video (not a faulty phone!) as the 1G card could record it perfectly.

Has anyone else who has a 2G or 4G card and tried recording video (highest quality settings) had a similar problem? Perhaps it is the quality of the card DSE supply free or an issue with the writing ability of the N95.

Also, I found that the extra card sits nicely under the battery cover if you want to carry a spare!

When you say 'jumping' do you mean that after around 10 secs or so, the frame rate drops from a smooth 30fps to around 20 or something and it looks a bit jerky?

Same happens for me using the Nokia 1GB card.

I bought a sandisk 2GB yesterday and this doesnt happen until around 15 or 20 seconds or so, I have a feeling that it may have something to do with the N95's buffer? I'm guessing if you record straight to the phone the jerkyness doesnt exist?

Also, if you format your card as FAT (not FAT32), then it performs twice as fast, but has more slack space

Also, I found that the extra card sits nicely under the battery cover if you want to carry a spare!

And a sim card too :-)

symSMB 2.0 finally released!

www.telexy.com/Products/ProductInfo.aspx

Just installed it last night, am now able to effortlessly access my N95 files on my home PC via WiFi.

Uploaded a whole bunch of MP3s to the phone (= FAST!) whilst streaming music from the phone to my PC, and transferring pics I'd taken with the camera.

The only thing I'm having trouble with is setting up the phone (as a client) to be able to browse files on the PC (as a server), but I suspect that this is a quirk of Win Vista.

Will do more trouble shooting with it tonight, and also try it with Win XP SP2 on my laptop.

Another one (that I know has been covered but I cant find it.....)
Just got the 2Gb card, but cant get the standard Nokia maps to come across or come back even with back ups and trying to dump one lot of card info onto another, how do I fix it without reloading maps (which i think will happen tonight!)

TJF: I managed to do it fine with my 2G card. Worked ok. I also did it with a friend's phone I set up. Just make sure you enable the hidden folders.

Caustic: I'll test out the video again on the 2G, 1G and phone memory and let you know the results.

I just tested again the the 2G card from DSE vs internal memory and 1G Nokia card using the highest quality video settings.

The 2G card misses a few frames every 10 seconds or so whereas the 1g and internal memory are fine. The internal memory video seems the smoothest. Could someone else who has a non-Nokia supplied card test it out and let me know if they have the same results?

i got a legal question

if i have a mount for my phone, and i adjust the settings or somthing what would a cop do.

im assuming he may try and throw me fine for not using hands free. dont like my chances of convincing them i wasnt making a call.

ive fiddled with my tomtom before when a highway patrol car was right behind me and they didnt try to PIT me off the road or anything so im bit confused

That is interesting, is it the reading or writing to/from the card that causes the flicker. Have you tried recording the video on the phone memory and copying it to the card to see if this works any better.

I reckon it happens because the recording/playback buffer fills up/depletes faster than it can read/write when using memory cards, which is why after 10 seconds or so, the smoothness drops.

I just took video recording to the internal memory (which played without fault) and transferred it to the momory card. The video played back perfectly from the memory card. Obviously it is a writing issue. Either the card's writing ability is slow (DSE are probably giving away el-cheapo ones) or the N95 can't write to cards over 1G at a fast rate.

Curious to hear if people with 2G cards have found the same problem.

Can you upload your videos somewhere so we can see what you're talking about?

When i record to my 2GB SanDisk card i get some jettering when panning quickly, but otherwise it's pretty solid.

I had the same problem writing to my 1gb Nokia card, my 2gb Sandisk performs a little faster and so lasted a little longer than 10 seconds (compared to the 1gb) but then it also started skipping frames when writing to the card after 15 seconds

That doesn't happen with my 1G which writes perfectly. Not sure why one phone recrds ok and another doesn't.

so got my phone from ebay today. Said aussie seller but the phone is an import from hong kong.

The main problem im having is that i cant find any Australia Access points. Like you know when you set up MMS you have to choose your access point... im with virgin and on my N73 it has Virgin MMS and also Virgin WAP for internet. The n95 only has something called CLS WAP and CLS Data.

its only got firmware v10 as well.

i have been reading that you can change to product code using NSS then update the firmware to v11 Australian version...

I know this will probably void to warranty but its a tax write off so i don't really care.... bloody ebay, never said anything about being an imported version... i should probably speak to the seller as well hey...

edit: so i updated the firmware anyway... all worked well but after turning it on the screen is sitting on 'Installing...' with a progress bar sort of thing... been sitting like that for at least 10 mins... is that normal?

ok so im quoting myself here which is a bit weird but anyway.

so i changed the phone product code to the Australian Code, updated to firmware V11 and it seems to be better now... Im with virgin as mentioned but now all I can choose for my MMS and WAP access points is Optus... as i said my N73 normally says Virgin MMS and Virgin WAP... anyone got any ideas as to how i can get Virgin Settings back?

thanks

G'day all

I bought my N95 this week, and it's a great phone.
Bit of a learning curve, but I'm getting there.
Previous phones were all Nokia, 5110, 3210,3350, 7250, then changed to Motorola V3 and V3X, back to Nokia for the first time in years.

I have had the phone lock up twice, the top right hand corner (Where you get the YES OPTUS" and Date etc and other icons remains blank.
Version 11.0.026 17-04-07 13.01 Firmware.

Is there a fix for this?

Also, can you change the orientation of the gps map to the same direction that you are travelling? Bit confusing driving east and the map is pointing North all the time.

Cheers.

My one is from DSE also, the free 2 gig one and it seems to work fine.. Havent examined it in minute detail, but on the whole, no serious lagging issues like I had with a 1 gig card on my N70 (the phone that promised everything and delivered nothing)

how do u import save tracks from sports tracker into google earth

man this rocks. i can even check my fastest speed and where on the road i did it. mine was 128kmph in a over taking lane hehe.

although i couldnt get it to play the trip. might try my trip back from busselton now

UPDATE: hehe oh that trip i was less naughty max speed 121kmph.

noticed it always thinks my highest and lowest points are start and finish. this sports tracker has tickled my intrest in GE again. might take my motorbike off road and checkout where we go. always wanted to do this sort of thing ever since i got my tomtom but i never had a way of recording a route, only showing where i was at that point in time, and even then my tomtom goes crazy when im off road ass it tried to cling to roads. must try and compensate by thinking its GPS lock is weak and predicts what road im on

but it tracks very well, even if it doesnt always match the maps on GE it manged to register me driving down the driveway at work (8m long) and reversing back when realised i had to park out front instead

Had my phone for about a month now on Optus. Slider if fine and thankfully no annoying buzz. (touch wood) but.....

all of a sudden the phone no longer vibrates for calls or msg. Anyone else have this problem or know how to fix it? I have taken the battery out a few times but still not working.

Also i find that sometimes when i write a msg and go select the person i want to send it to, before i get to select a person the phone cuts out and goes back to the main screen without even saving the msg in drafts. Has this happened to anyone else?

Thanks for that - I was just passing on the Sandisk information about specifications on the HC standard, just as most phone cannot read these unless they are HC enabled (like N95) - most card readers are not HC enabled. Good to hear that the standard card readers are not that picky!

yeah same, i think its it my head though as even afterabout 40 seconds on a call buzz is no better or worse. so considering the backlight times out after x amount of time having no effect of the clarity of the buzz i would have to say that idea is busted!
