Gday to all

I'm on the look out for a DVD player that will play DIVX and has USB2 support

what i want to do is run my external HD via USB so i can watch all my avi files with out having to convert to DVD.

Is this possible?
If anyone could recomend a few brands and model numbers.

"3.5-inch Car DVD Player And TFT With USB And SD Slots + TV + FM"

it is for a car and a quick glance does not indicate if it can be used elsewhere or with a TV.

There is no way the Conia M580 has a USB2 port. I'm sure it is only USB1. It may also not supply enough power to drive an external HDD, so you will need to have an externally powered case. That said, it is probably a good choice as long as the bitrate of your xvid files isn't too large.

I don't think any of the cheap dvd players available now have USB2. The best bet for a gadget with USB2 is probably something like the Mediagate MG350

I recently brought one of these (about two weeks ago), best thing I ever did. Awesome, plays all my avi files direct from my PC via the wireless connection. I transfer my dvd's to the mediagate using the NDAS software and play them direct from the mediagates hard drive on to the plazma.

We have saved over $50 bucks in scratched useless DVD's straight up.

i dont believe m580 has usb 2.0.. only usb1.0 .. which generally is ok for most tv shows.

i didn't have great experiences with m580, there was a sound delay problem (which may not have been a problem see below) on all my disks and the remote interfered with my amp.. which wasn't quite usable.

swapped it for phillips 5965k which was much more refined, but same setup.

(that said.. the sound problem occured on my phillips as well, and i worked out its my crappy amp delaying the sound.. so i had to turn my amp on first then the dvd player.. but it didn't seem to happen much at all with the phillips)

edit: OH and an important thing to note!. USB 1 players CAN slow down during scenes with a LOT of artifacts.. i.e. snow scene or water splashing, or lots of ppl clapping.. the rest is perfectly fine.. its most likely to be the transfer rate of usb1.0

only issue is that the USB is slave only, so only for connecting to the PC, not for connecting a usb device to it.

the only thing that I know of that takes USB proper is either a PC or one of the Divico items like this one, but no dvd player

It can act as a slave or a host, if you connect the Mediagate to a laptop it will act as a normal USB external drive (where you can copy and delete files). If you connect a USB device to it such as an external drive then the Mediagate becomes the host and will play all playable media on that drive.

I have a M560 (same diff), and loving it :D only problem i had with it so far is that it can jam up if your disc is screwy (had to open up the case to retrieve the disc), and not all avi codecs are supported. anyone know how to update the firmware on these things?

otherwise, bought it for $60 and still going strong after a year and a half

aldi currently have the conia m580, branded as a tevion tdvd08, for $34.99. here's the ad: forum.videohelp.com/topic334757.html

i've just bought one and it seems to work well, playing xvid off cd/dvd and a usb hard disk (although i hard to format it to fat32). i couldn't use my ipod as an external hard disk though.

my local store had plenty in stock.

Did any one manage to play HDD on Tevion? I bought that player at ALDI for the very same reason, formatted 20Gb HDD to FAT32 and have put *.AVI in to it, the message I'm getting is "Not allowed in the moment" any ideas any one?

My dad bought that same player today. I brought over my USB HDD that's formatted in FAT32 and while it would bring up the file browser it wouldn't even try reading the files off it. I assume HDDs aren't supported.

Flash drives on the other hand work 100% a-ok with DivX/XviD AVIs, but as far as I've seen so far it won't play files in other containers (MP4, MKV, etc) or WMVs.
Not bad if you just want to play XviD/DivX, but not a total replacement for having your PC hooked directly up to your TV.

I bought one of these on the weekend for $54 at the good guys. Having alot of trouble getting the file system to show all the files and sub-directories on the HDD. The same problem occurs when using a DVD with lots of MP3 directories and files. It seems that there is a limitation on the number of directories you can have. As soon as I have more than 5 directories on the root directory, it starts not correctly displaying all the contents of the directories. (It shows nothing even though there are files and/or further sub-directories there.) If I can't figure it out, I'll take the thing back. My thought is that this is probably a design issue rather than a fault with my unit, so if anyone else has been able to use this and have lots of nested directories without any problems, could you please post?

I noticed when reading off the dvd that a message comes up showing "first 500 files shown" when it initially reads the disc. It seems that the player only loads up the first 500 files, regardless of the directory they are in. Going into sub-directories doesn't refresh the list, so it seems that the total number of files you can store on a hard drive or disc might be 500? That being said, when playing around with it last night, I think I had a directory with over 600 photos and it showed them all. can't quite work it out.

regards,

jeff

Returned the unit, but bought the Tevion from Aldi on the weekend. It was $34.95 and they have plenty of stock. It has the same problem (maxes out at 500 files both on cd/dvd or on my hard drive). Quite annoying as it would be great to have my music collection available on the machine. However, for $34.95, I can't really complain too much and we did need a new dvd player of some description and this was about the cheapest thing out there.

I can vouch for the Tevion - it's a great buy. It's very slow to load CDs and DVDs but eh, doesn't matter! Mine hasn't skipped a beat in the 4-6 months I've owned it.

It won't take every USB device you throw at it, but once you get a system running you'll be very happy.

I have a Pioneer DV-400V-S

It has USB, plays divx, HDMI output and has 1080P upscaling, the picutre it produces is absolutely amazing. It can play fron any usb drive ive tried, but has to be in the format of FAT32. It takes most divx movies about 5 seconds to load, then plays them flawlessly.

I'd highly recommend this to anyone, add an external hardrive, and you have a perfect little media player.

The DV-400V-S is the silver version, the black one is the DV-400V-K. I bought the black one today at JB Hi Fi for $155. I haven't hooked it up yet to test if the USB port will accept an external HDD but from the earlier post it seems it does so that's a bonus.

It would save the transfer of files to external HDD in order to play them via USB on DVD player.

Doh!

I think an external usb HDD might have to suffice for simplicity. Streaming AVIs over a wireless connection is not %100 solid signal - with a few stutters, pauses & pic breakup, watchable yes, but satisfactory - nearly.

I've got a Highlander DVX-5850 from strathfield for $98. USB2.0 + SD Slot + HDMI + DVD Upscale and PCM output also. USB runs everything so far except my portable digimate II which has built in mem card readers so it has multiple mass storage... just a normal portable hdd drive works fine though.

Only issue atm is that the remote control is on the same frequency as my subwoofer controller =/ Player works great though.

I tried out this highlander one in the store, and it seemed that it only does the first 8 characters of a file in the view, which to me is fatal because if you have a bunch of 30 files all from the same tv series the first 8 characters are all going to be the same :-(

Have also tried out the lg player thats going around and unfortunately its usb1.1 which makes it useless :-( Time to have a go at the pioneer i think, but like with all of these things trying in store is essential

These DVD players with USB ports aren't "USB 2.0 High Speed", I found this info at – http://www.theregister.co.uk/2003/06/20/usb_forum_speeds_up_usb/

"
The trade group responsible for marketing the USB peripheral interface has given the older 1.1 specification a speed-boost -simply by changing its name.

Of course 1.1, superseded by the much speedier 2.0 specification, hasn't really got any faster. But the USB Implementors Forum (USB-IF) has decided that vendors can describe USB 1.1 ports as USB 2.0 ports.

Now they can describe the old specification as "Full Speed" and the newer, 2.0 specification as "High Speed." The Bangkok Post notes that this puts vendors in breach of EU trades description legislations. Whoops.

USB 2.0 was never intended to be branded with a version number. Instead, the USB-IF dubbed it 'Hi-speed USB'. USB 1.1 was to be known as plain old 'USB'. Manufacturers have nevertheless insisted on sticking with the version numbers, which is what seems to have cause all the trouble.

Apparently consumers were shunning older models.

"I now understand the new full-speed and high-speed naming, but what is going to happen when USB 3.0 is released? Is it going to be 'Really High Speed'?," asks an editorial in GeekNews

It's not the first bit of semantic ethnic cleansing we've seen this year. A handful of vendors have hijacked the 4G bandwagon, hoping that this will put them in the driving seat when the real 4G specification is passed."

I saw them in a Good Guys last week for about $50 (less for cash). I only took note as it's the same as the Aldi model that I paid $35 for about a year or two ago.

The USB is USB1 (not 2). I haven't bothered trying an external HDD as the externals I have are all either too large and/or NTSF formatted. I may try formatting an 80GB with FAT32 and wack it into a USB case – may work. I do have a few USB sticks that I use, and they work fine.
