My friend has an Asus M2400N and needs to replace/upgrade the hard drive.

I assume this is the same modem as its the closest I could find on the Asus web site

www.asus.com/products4.a...l=34&modelmenu=1

I downloaded the manual and had a look at the specs and looks like a 80gb IDE 2.5" 4200rpm is the largest size it will accept at the time of manufacture.

I assume a 5400rpm hdd would be suitable as well. Just wondering since larger size hard drives have been released. Will it accept something like a 160gb ide which is the largest current size 2.5" ide drive available at the moment?

I have fixed hundreds of laptops and I have not come across any that couldn't support the largest 2.5 inch drive or the faster speed drives. Maybe if the laptop is say 8 or more years old then there could be a limitation with the bios as to what size it will recognize but other than that I wouldn't worry.

If you do put in a 160gig drive then just remember that there is approx. 136gig limitation with Windows XP prior to service pack 2. It will still work perfectly but you will see that some space is missing. If this happens then you will need to use a third party program like Partition Magic to reclaim the lost space. Its an easy task and I am sure there are free programs out there that will do the job just as well.
