About 6 months ago I tried for ADSL2 with iiNet and told no. I then moved to Exetel 1500/256 and that has been fine. I am now looking at upgrading and would like to know if anyone here in Murrumba Downs has upgraded to the 8100/380 and how is it - speed, reliability etc.
I guess I am on a rim (not confirmed) and approx 5klms from the Kallangur exchange (as the crow flies).
Also If by any chance someone has ADSL2 in Murrumba Downs I would like to hear from you also.
Cheers

I am still interested to upgrade to 8100/380.
If no one lives in Murrumba Downs is there someone that lives on the Kallangur exchange, is approx. 5klms away and is currently on the 8100/380 plan.
I would like to know if it is worth paying the extra money.

If this is the case, then you're most probably on a RIM.
But wait.... if you're interested in ADSL1, then that's a good thing. A RIM is effectively an externally located piece of exchange equipment, often connected back to the exchange by fibre-optic cable.
This means that your distance from the exchange, is actually your distance from the RIM, which would probably be a lot less than 5km, possibly as close as a couple of hundred metres.

I'm not in your area, but I am connected on an Exetel 8192/384 plan in a non-city area. (Maitland)
The reliability of my connection is excellent. I do not experience dropouts at all, and speed is always good.
I hope this is helpful.

I am 4KM's from my exchange(Not sure if i am on a rim) and i am with exetel, I am on the 8192/384 plan and i can get speeds of 600k/s+ with steam ETC. If your rim is close to the exchange my guess is that you will get better speeds then what i get.

I've just moved to Murrumba Downs in the new part to discover that I am unable to get ADSL1 or ADSL2.
Apparently I am on a RIM system and I've tried both TPG (remind me never to use them again) and bigpond both of which were unsuccessful. Does anyone have any suggestions?
For some reason they both wrote in their replies that I should try another service number. Are they suggesting that if I got another line for my house perhaps I would have more success? Why would it be any different.
Providing I have no more alternatives to get wired broadband, does anyone have any suggestions for wireless plans? I connect frequently to my work use a VPN and require a fast stable connection with a decent amount of download quota...

I'm located in a rural area close to byron bay about 4.5 Km from the exchange, use to have a 1.5mbps connection with exetel, then I upgraded to 8mbps connection, its very fast and reliable.
Sometimes I didn't notice a huge difference when just downloading a single file (200-300 Kb/sec), but if I use a download accelerator like flashget I always get around 650 - 700 Kb/sec and the connection flies. Just gotta keep on eye on the peak usage ;)

A RIM is not a barrier to ADSL1. The most likely problem is that there are no spare ports available for you.
You need to contact Telstra Country-wide, and check with them if that's the case, and register your desire to get ADSL. When they have enough interest, they'll upgrade the RIM with more ports.
It's probably best to not let them know that you don't intend to sign-up with Bigpond though.

Hi thanks for your reply, most helpful. I probably would go with Bigpond as speaking over the phone you get a much better deal than what they offer on the net.
I'm just going to try applying once a month. If its a case of number of ports then surely if someone moved then perhaps a port would be free'd up? Its a bit rediculous too as the area isn't even close to full yet so there are going to be a lot of people that can't get the net.
I tried signing up with www.nowwearetalking.com but never got sent a confirmation email so I can't post on their forums to voice my frustrations.

I guess it all depends on how many other people are doing the same thing.
You really should consider registering your desire to have ADSL with your local Telstra Countrywide office (and get as many of your neighbours as you can to do the same thing), as it's only when Telstra see that there sufficient interest, that they will upgrade your RIM.
