I'm also looking forward fo this phone to be released also. The phone featured in the allphones catalogue looked different (looks like the lg shine in my opinion) to the pictures you see on the net. I talked to the guy about when it is to be released and on what networks but he had no idea.

anyone know much about this??

samsung have been aweful at promoting this phone. It was in the allphones catalog a few weeks ago and looks quite impressive. Some shops said they will get it mid-june .... which is a week away and i still havent seen or heard much about this phone. Also cant seem to find any pictures of the platinum version (the one pictured on the catalog) ... all the pics on the web are a pretty average dark blue colour.

Not sure about the official release date but it's available to buy on ebay now.
Price is $649 + $50 delivery.
Maybe will wait till it's available here to compare the price before making decision to buy it from ebay.

From another thread:

forum-replies.cfm?t=728088#r5

It was meant for a first quarter release in Europe, so a June/July release date would not be a ridiculous assumption.

Hi everyone,

New to this and a great site!

I have just purchased the samsung U700 and love all the features bar one.

The screen saver appears to automatically go to a silver mirror (type of look) and I would prefer to be able to see at any time whether I had a message or a missed call.

Does anyone know if you can change that option?

Thanks!

I gather people are referring to the Samsung Blackjack.

The versions that Optus/Vodafone selling appears to be different in several ways to the one offered by Telstra.

from Cnet article: www.cnet.com.au/mobileph...339274471,00.htm

Optus/Vodafone: Wi-Fi (802.11b/g), Telstra: No Wi-Fi

Included accessoriesAdditional battery (Optus, Vodafone), Extended life battery and back cover (Telstra)

The Telstra site is almost useless as it doesn't even tell you what speed HSDPA it is, hence why the person who 'owned' the one I played with thought it was 14Mbps, as per the Telstra hype.

A few comments, screen was very good, with good photo rendition. The keyboard was not as good as the standard Blackberry one. It would probably be similar to the HP iPAQ, which I think is very poor.

Headset socket is on the side and not a standard phone connector which is not good for using as a music player.

I guess you're referring to the xenon flash in the SE and led flash found in others. they both have strengths and weaknesses, so u cant call one crap without weighing up these differences first.

Yes that is what I am referring to. And yes I have weighed up the differences.... it is quite simple.... one can take a decent photo at night and the other cannot.... I'll leave you to guess which is which.... heres a clue though, how many digital camera's or any camera on the market for that matter are sold with an LED flash?????

Back to the question, does the U700 have an LED flash or not?????

I think he means that as it is a phone, some people like the LED flash because it can be used for other things other then just photo's. I would rather have a xenon flash, but my current phone and my previous phone had/have LED flashes and I use that as a light in dark conditions. You can't do that with a xenon flash sadly. Some people might say, its a camera flash, so it shouldn't matter, but then remember this is a phone after all. So there are things to weigh up.

My preference xenon flash, but it's not everyones.

Very seriously thinking about grabbing one of these. My current contract is up for renewal and while my D600 is going alright it's time for a new phone. The lack of automatically saving sent messages is driving me up the wall - speaking of which does the u700 do this automatically? Please say yes...

Going to check out Optus World today and see how I go. Never know, might have it today. So far the feedback looks good - but I've had a hell of a time trying to find Australian reviews which is a tad annoying. Not surprising though since it's still fairly new.

As a former D600 owner, I also knew how annoying that was (actually Samsung's have a lot of annoying features, which I won't go into, because they have been discussed to death on this forum), but from my knowledge the U700 is just like the D600. I am not 100% though, but I asked someone in a shop and they said no, it doesn't. However, that was just one person and we all know some of the salesmen don't know what they are talking about in the first place.

Ok I got mine a couple of hours ago now (I actually went to Optus soon after posting). And it does indeed save sent messages without me doing anything extra. Score!

I've just got it all set up how I like, although a few things that bug me is that there's no way to change the action for the top left/right soft buttons, nor the middle button. Another annoying thing was that for a phone with a micro-SD slot it doesn't come with a card - not a problem for me since I've got a spare one. However for someone who doesn't have a micro-SD they will have to buy one. Another minor issue is that you can't set custom tones for the message tone unless they're MIDI.

Apart from that it's a pretty sweet phone. As far as function goes - it's very schmick.

More detail to follow after a couple of days use. Chances are I will have totally forgotten about those things above.

i'm thinking of getting this phone too, but have a few questions which i hope u can clear up...

1. my d600 would play the first 1-2secs of mp3 ringtones softer than the rest. does the u700 still do this?
2. does it ring AND vibrate at the same time?
3. can u set custom mp3 alarm tones?

bummer about the SMS tones though...

i've been looking for a flip/slide phone with that feature too.
I find the SE k750 and similar models torch function invaluable.

As long as there is a way to turn on the led light without taking a picture i will buy this phone.

Looking at the U600 though, because i don't like the silver finish. (any major differences with that model to the u700? besides the 3g etc support)

i'm just wondering, because i read some reviews on other websites and someone mentioned that the phone gets hot after a while of talk time. I'm actually deciding between a nokia e65 and this phone. But I'm a seasoned nokia user, so I'm really comfortable with their functions. Thing is, Samsung has got some annoying functions which irks me at times.

oh, and i heard that the touchpad can be really irritating at times too. does anybody think that this phone will actually survive a drop? :(

You will find that no other user interface will sum up to nokia's if you are already accustomed to them. That's what i found when sampling SE's, motorola's and samsung's. What we find standard and take for granted are not always there in other brands. The user-friendliness given by nokia will never be beat.

I just bought the U700 last week, its great, it works the same as other Samsung's. I was trying to pick between this or the Nokia E65, this is cheaper, better looking and doesn't have all those business features I would never use.

I bought it out right, I only paid $590.00. I'm with Vodafone and it works fine even though its a optus phone. The only annoying this is it comes up with a button specifically for Optus Zoo... but who cares it looks great and the features are amazing.

I just got mine today, 4 stores in Westfields i went to in 2 different suburbs were out of stock, finally got one (apparently the last one) from Strathfield radios and they gave me a free 2gig mem card.

I think the only reason they gave it to me was cause i asked if it was bundled with any bluetooth headsets and the guy said "Well yes but we're out of them, I can give you a 2 gig mem card though..." So i went with that instead.

Really loving it to bits so far. Its very easy to use and the menus are as good as my old SE W800i. Only hating the finger prints now lol.

I also dont like the way the charger connects... On the side? Makes it so uncomfortable to use + charge at the same time. Im scared im going to snap it and the pins or something.

You can change the side volume key to do this by going to

Do you mean assigning a different ringtone for different contacts?

I havent done it myself but from

Phone book, choose contact, options, edit, keep scrolling down. You should see 'ringtone' and it looks like you can select different sound files for that contact.

Hope that helps

i actually went down to the optus store and got a nice try playing with the new phone. The only thing honestly that is holding me back is that the optus $49 cap does not include the international calls in the free 300 mins. That is the only thing holding me back and im not willing to spend $600 on a phone!

Yeah fair enough... My almost 2 yr old W800 would only like about 3 days or so but keep in mind this has bigger screen, brighter and higher res screen. Not sure about other functions of the phone but the screen size alone would zap a fair more amount of battery than our smaller SE

okay, so i've had this phone for a day and i've already had a few problems:

1) touch pad temp didn't work - i was changing the background when suddenly none of the touchpad buttons worked, turned it on and off and everything under the sun and nothing. then after about 15 minute of stuffing around and recharging it, it suddenly worked. i have no idea what was going on there...

2) my camera doesn't work at all. i click on the camera and it just comes up with an error "camera failed".

was wondering if anyone else has had these problems? if so, how did you fix them?

other than the broken camera, i'm very happy with the phone.

Have had mine since Monday, no issues at all so far.

Sounds like youve got a dodgy? See if you can take it back for an exchange since its only a day old, or make that two...

So I notice a few people have said that the U700 wont work on Telstra Next G - but will it not work at all or is it just some features that wont work??

I've been looking for a new phone for ages and haven't found anything i like. Finally I fall in love with the U700 and find out that it wont work on Telstra - aaaaaarrrrghhhh!!!!!

Changing phone companies is not an option for me but I desperately want that phone!!! I'm willing to forgo some of the advanced 3G features as long as it works as a phone ok....

Key features

* sleek looks and high quality body construction
* touch-sensitive keys beneath the display
* Up to 3.6 Mbits/sec download speed over UMTS + HSDPA
* scroll navigation
* camera with 3.2 megapixel resolution and autofocus
* QVGA display
* microSD memory cards
* seamless synchronization with Outlook and Outlook Express
* good software for PC

Main disadvantages

* the glossy surface of the display reduces legibility
* records video in ancient QCIF (176 x 144 pixels) resolution only
* no FM radio
* no call filtering
* a single black, non user-configurable theme in the main menu

I want one. It looks great. A mate has one- I need to convince optus to let me early-upgrade/re-contract!

What's the amount of in-built memory on the u700?

It says 40mb on the gsmarena website, but in CNET Asia review website it says 20mb.

Just checked mine, its 40mb internal mem.

Could be different for overseas models maybe?

If you buy the phone outright at shops or on a plan, im sure you can always get them to through in a 2gig mem stick... I did

Just picked up one of these phones from Optus to replace my D600. While my D600 is still somewhat new there were a few annoying quirks with it (Like not automatically saving sent text messages) and other minor things that pushed me over the edge to getting the U700.

Ultimately i am glad i did the switch. I love this phone despite being a bit hard to get used too at first (The scroll wheel thing and the touch keys for example), once you get the hang of it, it is very simple to operate and use. Though the memory in the phone has decreased quite a bit in the phone (Down from 90mb in my D600 to 40mb in the U700) it's something that can be easily fixed with a transflash card.

The live wallpaper (as i call it) is a nice touch, a picture of the Sydney Opera House which changes depending on the time of day is very sleek and looks great.

The aesthetics of the phone are suburb it is super slip and looks incredibly sexy and sleek. It is packed full of feature and is a vast improvement on my old phone (Yay for the auto saving text messages!!!!). It is incredibly light and being a Samsung still feels quite sturdy and solid.

However there is a few minor gripes i have with the phone which may just be because i am still fiddling with it, there are no Alarm Tones that i can find instead you need to use standard ring tones as alarms. The included headphones are a bit hit and miss, finding them a bit uncomfortable at times, but no matter i don't plan to use them anyway. The memory size was a bit of a disappointment but like i said it's easily fixed with a 2gb transflash card.

Overall it's an absolute fantastic phone, packed full of features that vastly outweigh the negatives in my opinion. It was a very wise purchase decision on my part, so to those considering buying it, go to an Optus shop or somewhere that has one and ask to have a play around with it to see if it suits you. But straight up if you were to ask me i would say go and buy it.

Hey I have two questions for those that own the U700...

1) What is the speakerphone like? I heard it's really soft and if you're using it in a car it's almost impossible to hear...

2) CNET www.cnet.com.au/mobileph...339280017,00.htm

Said the touch buttons are incredibly annoying is this them just being picky? Or is it a frustration of others as well?

I'm seriously considering getting this phone also from optus but haven't seen anyone mention these two aspects.

Cheers,
Andrew

Speakerphone is fine for me, i don't use it all that often so i havn't played with it much but from the little time i have spent using it, it is fine.

As for the touch keys they are frustrating and annoying at first but you do get used to them after a little while. It's hard to give an opinion on them in general because everyone will have a different opinion on how well implemented they are. For the first while my finger did brush against them a few times. But as i said you get used to it eventually, or at least i did.

Hi All - new to forum.

Currently I have a samsung on an optus plan which is due to expire in Feb 08. I'm pretty much over my phone. Was thinking about buying the u700 off ebay as they are HEAPS cheaper! Can I trust them though?

Also, I was thinking of just putting my simcard in the u700 and finishing off my plan. Once the plan was up, I want to change back to Telstra, probably pre-paid (as I get better coverage as I live in a remote area). Would this be possible? Would it cost me... maybe a new simcard?

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers!

I am upgrading from my D900 to this phone. I have made an insurance claim- have had insurance for over 2 years and never claimed and D900 started playing up. Anyway, it's only costing me $85 to get the phone- but it is also being ordered.

When I spoke to the girl on the phone about it, she said that there has been no word from Samsung and they were simply adviced to tell people it will take 2-3 weeks. Apparently the guy that has been waiting the longest has already been waiting 3 weeks and there are 100 or so more people on the waiting list after him.

I wonder how puntual the new stock will come- as a few of you seems to have been given a definate date.

I was going to get something else instead, but when I spoke to the girl at the store, she said it will be worth the wait... Anyway so now I am waiting, with no idea how long it might take for Optus to get more in.

Well i have an update for you guys that have been waiting for a week or more.
You should be getting yours this week optus have only a very limited supply of the handsets they recieved yesturday.

The bad news for people who ordered theres this week is you will probably have to wait 2 or 3 weeks for it as there is another batch being shipped.

Yes it seems that way.

I just called my local store as there was a mix up and they sent my old phone back. :S

ANYWAY:

I asked the guy while I had him on the phone whether he knew anything about it. (As insurance had little idea) and he informed me that there has been infact a batch that arrived this week (it has yet reached his store) and there's a total number of only 1500. It sounds like a lot but as they are all allocated- his store was only getting 3 and there are 20 people on order.

He did tell me that there are words on a 2nd batch coming and hopefully this time it will be a larger number. He suggested I call insurance in a week if I hear nothing, but better yet- call Samsung direct to find out. He suggested that the more people call Samsung- the more numbers they will send out as they will see the high demand for this product.

Hey,

Anyone know if the u700 has voice dialling? I can't find it on the phone, but some webpages say it does have it, though others say it doesn't!

Also, I switched from the Sydney Living Wallpaper to a picture, then switched back - but no longer have Sydney harbour - got some park now - any ideas?

Thanks

Spoke to several people at phone shops, and a mate of my boyfriend's who works in one- told me that the Shine is a waste of time and to quote the salesperson "would be the worst mistake I'd ever make" I know she wasn't just saying that to make me to buy another phone either, as I am claiming a new one through insurance, so I went in for advice on what would be better.
