Hi,

I have just installed the new Ubuntu 7.04. The default media player does not play .rmvb files - so I installed couple of plugins however none of them play the file as well.

Can anyone suggest me which player and from where can I download a player that can play .rmvb files. I am new to linux so don't know much - a simple answer would be appreciated..

Cheers

I think rmvb is a realplayer file: so install realplayer linux

If you need help installing realplayer try automatix -> www.getautomatix.com

Try Kmplayer. Its works flawlessly for me plus it should be in the repos.

VLC plays rmvb pretty well, give that a go.

Get it from the Ubuntu repositories.

Yes as the others have said mplayer or vlc player will both play your rmvb files and there both in synaptic so just install whichever you prefer , you will also need w32codecs to be installed so you can also play other formats as well. Below will install w32codecs for you and the rest is in synaptic package manager.

wget medibuntu.sos-sts.com/re...+build1_i386.deb
sudo dpkg -i w32codecs_20061022-0medibuntu1+bui ld1_i386.deb

cheers

OP said simple, but for the furture good of mankind...some Realmedia files will only play with realplayer properly (and I mean with sound as opposed to without or at all).

This is where the nightly build of realplayer is. It is unstable. However, if it borks just go back to your old realplayer.

forms.helixcommunity.org...realplay-current

Played a file that was spitting up an error in Firefox, Opera et al, even though I was using the latest stable build (from October last year...).

MPlayer is very good, plays pretty much everything except has no GUI. Think theres something called GMPlayer which has a GUI. I try to avoid Real files if possible. Even when using RealPlayer in 7.04, most the time it lags, the rest of the times, has no sound.
I don't think VLC can play Real, www.videolan.org/vlc/features.html Just scroll down a bit. Real is pretty much the only format it can't play, otherwise, orange witches hat FTW! =)
w32codecs is useful, but won't play real. I know you said it will play the rest but OP only wanted to play Real.

OP, try MPlayer.

Again Wrong : Support for WMV, RealMedia and other formats has been bundled into the w32codecs package.

You are right about vlc though looks like it don't play real.

So i would go with Mplayer and w32codecs.

Cheers

EDIT: VLC player may play real since the W32codecs has real support bundled into the package .
