basically it was about a dude called Kogan who went to China and bought a bunch of electronic gear and branded it with his own name.

Then he ships it to Aus and sells it on ebay.

All that stuff about him being annoyed at the big retailers charging too much is utter crap. I thought it was going to be a way to get the name brand stuff wholesale direct but hes just importing cheap crap.

Heres an example of the stuff he sells cgi.ebay.com.au/NEW-26-H...99QQcmdZViewItem

$999 for a 26" LCD?? Not cheap at all! I got my Sony Bravia 26" LCD for $1200 but that included a 5 year warranty. That means my Sony was better value than his Kogan.

You would be better off buying a brand like Soniq or similar from JB Hifi. At least they will be around to honour the warranty unlike Kogan.

As I mentioned in the DVT forum...
I don't think it ever did but if someone could get Kogan to check his message box here I have an offer to him to host it and possibly buy a set myself.

Would members of this forum and the Toppy forum be bothered to come to the Brighton/Hampton area for such an Open Display Day?

Without disclosing the location just yet I can say the facilities are worth the trip!

If so Kogan people do contact me and maybe we can set something up.

I am suggesting a location for the Kogan people and possibly the Topfield people to put on an open display day in a good setting with plenty of car parking and close to public transport.

Did you read the whole post you linked to?

Price is $999- if you pick up the unit yourself. Additional $75 for courier delivery.

Price includes 1 Year On Site warranty. There is a 5 year onsite warranty for additional $275-. Do most retailers offer on site warranty with large LCD TVs these days?

"Value" is in the eye of the beholder. Having said all that, I think I will wait for the true HD screens to come down in price a little more.

Cheers :)

Yeah! BUT did you read the whole thread?

Kogan asked his buyers via email to them all to please post their feelings on the product they had bought in the DVT forum.

A game move if you were not sure you had happy customers.

Plus like any forum you are first introduced to and join up with you have to make a first post sometime and happy, satisfied customers of his DID!

Look back at the start of that thread and Kogan's prices were unbelievable and now regular big name market players (Sony etc) have had to come to the party with their prices. It's people like him that make greedy feckers learn. Hope he makes a frigging fortune.

LOL, thinking a small time importer with limited sales has had ANY affect on the retail market is a bit silly. He is filling a gap and the large OEM's would be loosing VERY few sales to this guy. People who can afford a decent LCD panel are going to buy one. While large TV's seem expensive it is not as bad as it seems. They cost a lot to make, are reasonably new tech and have a high failure rate. All of this adds up to more expensive products. A quick read of some of his comments gives the impression of he is marketing and nothing more. LCD panels have different grades so comment about it using the same panel as Sony are irrelevant unless everything is of the same quality.

No wonder we Aussies are renowned knockers! You ASSUME his product is not decent. Try looking at some of the major suppliers problems over the last year. LG for one.

I say instead of knocking something that is new on the market and if Kogan brand wish to have an Open Display Day then those in Melbourne make an effort to come along to evaluate for themselves. Then post real facts here.

What disgusts me is that TT give props to their idiot friends, who don't have to honor a warranty AFAIK, as IIRC and the law is current as i know it, plasma and LCD tvs bought at auction have ZERO warranty.

EDIT: LOL @ the crappy 1000:1 contrast ratio, haha.

Why not spend 2.2 grand on a Tw700 projector instead? 10,000:1 ratio and real 720p...and a real warranty too...

Don't tell me this is not enforceable...

Warranty
Australia wide on-site warranty
2 business hour response time!

All Kogan LCD TVs come with a one year, Australia wide, on-site warranty. For peace of mind, we offer 3 and 5 year extended warranty options:

3 year: +$150
5 year: +$250

Please email us after your purchase to take up an extended warranty option and we will re-issue you an updated invoice.

IMPORTANT
When buying an LCD TV, ensure that it comes with on-site warranty. On-site warranty ensures that you will never have to transport the TV yourself. LCD TVs are very difficult to transport if you don't have the original packaging.

This isn't too bad either...

Hopefully it will go ahead this time but I feel the sale rate he is presently having wouldn't make it a priority at this stage.

I just went through 25 pages of his eBay Feedback and it was amazing the few Negs were for the most ridiculous of reasons.

People not reading the availability date on the auction page for the item they bought and others for not checking the email address they had lodged with eBay.

Exactly.

At least with other no-name TVs sold in stores (such as the Soniqs sold at JB), you've got a store where you can physically go and check the TV out properly before committing to it. Also, should anything go wrong, at least a bricks and mortar store has some sort of presence (and usually a reputation to maintain).

In other words, if I was in the market for an entry level no-name LCD TV, i'd be more inclined to buy from somewhere half-decent like JB or Big W rather than buy something off some dude off eBay. On the plus side, at least he didn't make those testimonials on the DTV Forum up himself, despite the fact that spamming his customers to get those testimonials is only slightly less appalling than actually making up the spam himself.

Yeah and those obviously novice eBayers should have read on the site for their auction the availability date posted before they bid! His Feedback rating is very good and if you read the first 25 pages of it you will see why some fools posted Negs that should not have been posted. Plus the negative ones that have been rescinded

and i noticed some "bad sound" comments, and theres a few reviews of them on the dtv forums generally saying the same thing.

Yes you are right there about the sound quality from the DVT and Feedback comments. If in my case I wouldn't be concerned as i wouldn't be using their speakers anyway. That seems to be the only negative that holds any water so far.

Dunno, just saying for a sketchy no name brand(which this is) i would not be paying that much for it

While having a point of reference is a start I think people should be careful, is it a shopfront with service staff or just a warehouse where you pick things up?

I think a lot of the negative comments in this thread is from brandname Fanboi's.

But at least if you buy a generic brand from a major retailer you have some confidence in said retailer, JB Hi-Fi, Big W, KMART or whoever has a vested interest in making sure you have good after-market service.

Kogan on the other hand is an unknown quantity, does anyone have reports of how well the warranty stacks up, are the guarantees actually worth something.

In the coming months hopefully we will get information coming in about the nature of the warranty, how good the service reps are as well as the genuine reliability and long-term quality of the products. But until then I'll probably reserve judgment.

P.S I would be interested to know about the nature of documentation that comes with the goods, do you receive a formal tax invoice? Also is there some sort of warranty card or product registration card that also arrives?

What native resolution do you need to display 1080i? Wouldn't you need 1080 vertical resolution, and not the 1366x768 that a lot of '1080i HD TVs' have? To look at it another way, how can you benefit from the horizontal resolution of 1080i if you've only got 1366 pixels.

Dude why are you getting so angry. I'm not knocking his business. I've got no love for 'name brands' either but that doesn't mean i'm going to buy some import TV from someone who noone has heard off from ebay

All i see in this thread is basically people saying they aren't worth the money he is asking (fair call imo) and you acting as Kogans PA

Like the previous poster coming out with would you trust a warehouse in Carrum Downs. Get my point?

As to your last claim read my posts of today.

Dude why are you getting so angry.

Not angry just trying to bring some sense to some ridiculous claims made here.

Meh. This appears to be yet another yum-cha 'brand' that specialises in selling cheap, nasty junk to the lowest common denominator.

No wonder TT jumped at the chance to do an infomercial for this bloke.

What would you know? Kmart and Target sells cheap TVs all the time. Not everyone wants a highend sony or even a samsung, or has the bucks to spend on them. This is exactly the market Kogan is trying to target. Cheap doesn't make a product crap. If you just wanted a TV in your bedroom to watch free to air TV, then Kogan is perfectly suited for that.

Don't understand what all you ppl are complainning about. If you think it's dodgy and don't want to buy "cheap crap". Then go to myer and buy your Sony at the premium price. Kogan is doing perfectly fine without the whiners on this forum who I doubt even makes up for less than 0.1% of the entire consumer population in Australia. If anything, you guys are just jealous cause he is out there making $$$ whilst all you ppl can do is sit here complain and spread fake rumours.

Thats very good of you, but it's fair game for other people to have their own opinions and be a little skeptical. Forking out $2k+ on something you can't look at, test or even get good reviews on is obviously going to be risky, and the posters here are just being weary. I know i wouldn't be buying a 'yum cha' branded car just because it's a little cheaper without knowing exactly what i was getting into.

You must also remember the majority of posters on whirlpool are very informed consumers, which is probably why they are so distrustful. Kogan may be good for a family with a tight budget but not electronic gurus, which of many reside on here in whirlpooland.

Weatherman syndrome - you always remember the times they're wrong, and never the times they're right.

I actually work at Kogan Direct, and you are correct - there was one container delayed due to a number of factors. We apologise for that, and have since changed shipping companies to entire it does not happen again.

However having said that, our second container of LCD TVs actually came three days early and we dispatched those prior to the estimated dispatch date.

Anyway, if anyone here lives in Melbourne, we do offer viewings at our office. LCD TV quality is really viewer-dependent, so if you are a Melbournian contemplating a purchase, I would definitely recommend coming to our office for a visit.

Yes you are right in the fact people are entitled to be skeptical but opinions based on nothing but warehouse location and jumping on a band wagon to criticize without any knowledge I disagree with.

Take the time to read Kogan's feedback or go and view the product first before being sheep and following each other with non facts.

Forking out $2k+ on something you can't look at, test or even get good reviews on is obviously going to be risky

You are certainly correct there! LOL

Truth be known most are young immature forum lovers and good luck to that but please be factual when wanting to criticize someone trying to have a go.

Kogan may be good for a family with a tight budget but not electronic gurus, which of many reside on here in whirlpooland.

I would hesitate to guess that a number of Kogan LCD purchasers would have that qualification. Have a look at JB's current catalogue and see the yum cha brands there. Plus how prices are coming down quickly. Like I suggested earlier maybe people of Kogan's existence are contributing to this???

Also as mentioned previously my Club is looking to purchase a new WS TV and we will look at the Kogan. Or I should say they might as my time may not allow me to unless it be an in house presentation.

Thus I have offered them our reception room for an open display day and had hoped some of the knockers had been more sensible in their posts and maybe had a little enthusiasm to encourage Kogans to do so.

...and this post by Yoza in the DVT Forum regarding the Kogan dead pixel policy...

The warranty covers the whole TV including the panel, casing, power supply, input cards and all the labour and freight associated with any repair that might be needed.

If a problem occurs, you would call our 1800 help desk and we would assign your job to one of our 380 specially trained technicians Australia wide. You will then receive a phone call within 2 business hours from the technician and they will schedule a convenient time to come on-site and analyse the problem. If off-site repair work is required, the TV will be transported to a repair centre and then couriered back to your place at no expense to you.

In terms of dead pixels, this is a very touchy and ambiguous area when it comes to LCD TVs. We have policy that if there are more than 2 dead pixels on the screen, we will replace it for you. Our definition for dead pixel (unlike the other big brands), includes all types of defective pixels such as stuck, active, passive and dead.

That's the thing, i would still consider that pricey considering Big W sell a fairly decent 32" for $800-$1000 depending on sales.

For me to even consider Kogan they'd have to go under $7/800 for a 32", $1400 for a 42".

People want information as is the format of forums and I am simply passing on info gained by partaking in this and other forums.(Topfield & DVT Forums) Rather than being the prophet of doom like some of those that post. LOL

Mind you if Kogan's takes up my offer of providing a free venue for an Open Display Day then I will have an association with them but be assured I would report back truthfully and with facts.

There again hopefully there would be many others from here and the other forums that will do so also.

By the way if people would rather see the actual Kogan products rather than whinge about something they haven't ever seen then show your support here for that open day.

it will be interesting to see how long the 'kogans' brand stays around for....

there are a lot of cheap brands on the market, and i wouldn't want to spend over $500 on an item if i wasn't sure the company was going to be around long.....
if he is a new brand, then to help people trust his brand, then in my opinion a 3 yr warantee should be standard....

they don't seem much different in price to the various other 'yum cha' brands around...and because they are a 'new' brand ,there is no history of how reliable their goods are...

there have been many cheap brands brought into australia over the years, and a lot of have gone....it depends on how much of a risk people want to take....

i have ALWAYS found that for electrical goods that i can haggle the price down well below the rrp, and still get a well-known brand with a warantee that will be backed up...

the dtv forums are good to check out what prices people can get for many home theatre/tv goods

It had actually no relevance to their decision. They were SOLD by a salesman and knew little themselves as to brands, quality and options.

The only chance Kogan's would have had if they got off their butts and approached them.

That set would not have been my choice had I had one.

I was pushing for an LCD.

The new LG is in the same room as the 50" Pioneer Plasma and at this stage I prefer the pioneer's PQ.

When first looking for a 50" plasma with the wife in tow, she was impressed by the price of the LG whereas I had my eye on the Pioneer.

Luckily, the JB we were in had an LG set up next to a Pio playing identical material.

"Look at the way each one displays black," was all I had to say.

Once you see the difference, you can't un-see it. And you can't settle for less.

Hampton RSL, Victoria

Read about it here...

You can bring along your PVRs, Xboxes, DVD Players etc and take the opportunity to run them through one of his LCD TVs or just look at the sets on display.

I have contacted Topfield/Beyondwiz to see if they are interested in doing something in conjunction with the Kogan display.

Just returned from a meeting at my Club with Ruslan Kogan and his Operations Manager Daniel Beahan to discuss the Open day on Sun 7th Oct.

Daniel said he would post details soon but rumour has it or I should say I overheard them discuss that all the sets that will be on display will be new and the fact that they have been removed from their cartons must now be sold as display units. Me thinks if you are in the market for a large LCD Screen to make an offer on the day. Who knows what saving you will get.

Today was mostly to give them a look at the space available and for them to work out the display layout. So I guess until they finally work out the details and post we are kept in suspense.

The thought of an auction on the day was mentioned but no further news on that until they decide on that outcome.

I had my first look at their GPS unit and was quite impressed with it. It will be on show on the day.

They will display a full range of sets along with a prototype of a new set they are about to release but will wait for Daniel to fill you in on that one rather than muck up the details.

I believe finger food may be available but our Bistro has a fabulous Sunday Roast on between 12 & 2pm.

Would love to tell you more but today was just a chance to meet Ruslan and Daniel and for them to view the room to make their plans so stay tuned.

Might pay to express your interests in attending and any ideas you can suggest to enlighten the day. (Within reason.LOL)

Bollocks. What KOGAN is doing is paying a couple of people on various forums to come and post how great these POSs are. Then they get upset when the majority of people with some sense realise this stuff for the crap that it is.

That is total rubbish!

Why slander him or his products if you don't know him or the products in question?

BTW My reasons for bringing this on...

1. I got sick of people posting negative comments in this thread (DTV Forum) about something they have never seen or experienced and the consistent knocking of someone willing to have a go.

2. My curiosity in seeing and learning about the technology in these products and the opportunity to run my PVR through an LCD set.

3. Finally but not least my convincing the Club management not to charge venue fees as it would help promote bars sales on what is normally a quiet day. That and that alone is my major personal concern.

So those of you in Melbourne on that Sunday lets get together and have some fun.

Don't knock something until you have actually seen it! I haven't and reserve my judgment until doing so next week but do reserve my right to defend somebody being rubbished by people that know SFA about the product.

BTW Kogan is not paying me so take a jump!

Why don't you come down Sunday and see what his sets are really like without making baseless comments on them?

It is easy to knock something you haven't seen thus this day.

I still haven't seen his LCD sets and will make up my mind after I do and until then you might have noticed I haven't commented on them apart from saying don't knock something or somebody without real proof.

Seems to be a common theme these days. Individuals (haha...what an oxymoron) lack the ability to form their own conclusions without influence from their peers.

I reserve my judgement on everything. All negative/positive comments are taken with a grain of salt. I make my own conclusions. It's not that hard...really. All that's required is a little time away from your computer.

Like the saying goes..."C
