Quick question..
hows does Acronis TrueImage 10 home create a full image of a hard drive while it is in windows?
When you use ghost you have to create the image before windows loads (boot from floppy)
so how can Acronis create a full image of everything (including windows) when it is in windows and a lot of files would be in use...
thanks

Another vote here for the speed of ACT in restoring HDD and/or partitions. My initial Backup Image (clean) is 4.77 GB and my Incremental Backup Image is 5.40 GB and works treat when and if needed.
I have no idea how the program works all I know is that it does do what it claims.

thats the home edition?
So you've created an image then reinstalled windows completely from that image? I suppose your would need to boot from the CD to restore the image....

It is only only copying files.

You can start the reinstall from within Windows. Acronis will reboot before starting reinstall.
If you use Acronis Secure Zone, you can access it by pressing F11 before Windows loads. Also you can use Acronis boot disk if you can't start Windows.

Acronis TrueImage is amazing. Imho, the best on the market.
It makes an image of my Vista partition and my linux ext3 partitions. And it restores them beautifully :-)
Highly recommended for the price. Worth it!

If you mean Image size, Acronis allows you select varying degree of compression of which the end result is different overall Image file size. : D

Another vote for Acronis here.
One of the great advantages of using Acronis, is that it lets you back up specific files and folders if needed. It also allows you to mount the Acronis image as a virtual drive, and copy/paste files from it with ease.
One big advantage of Acronis, is that you can create an image of the HDD while booted in Windows.
It's worth spending your dollars on Acronis rather than ghost. Ghost seems to be outdated now, as Symantec really haven't updated that much.

In all fairness to Symantec , its not that ghost is outdated, they actually have a newer version, but its now called "Save & Restore".
However, having said that, Acronis TrueImage is the best. Its professional and well designed and reliable and solid.
And I love the ability to create encrypted hidden partitions on my Hard Drive to store an image. And at boot, I can press a key combo and restore image anytime. Really professional package indeed.
I STRONGLY recommend Acronis TrueImage. Small investment for a fantastic product

I was Symantec's fan at the time of Windows 98 II but now I really disagree with them.
I've had chance to try both Ghost and TrueImage and a part Acronis's undiscussed abilities, I found that Ghost makes much smaller images.

what are you talking about? You must be kidding right? Acronis is a software used for creating image of your hard drive i.e software related.

It's perfect. I can't imagine it getting any better in anyway. Did a restore a couple weeks ago. Took about 10 minutes from start to finish. Every thing seems spot on.
Can anyone confirm it works with E6600 / Intel 956 mobo ?
Why wouldn't it ? It just takes an image of your HDD. I don't see how your CPU/Mobo could affect it.

wassam writes... You must be kidding right?
no, not kidding, just a little short on details. I'm not talking about it running from windows.
I assume my drive will die one day and I will have to rely on boot disc to restore the system. I've used ghost for many years to do this, but the ghost recovery disc simply won't boot and run correctly on my new 965-based pc. I also tried seagate's 'discwizard' (which is basically a cut down and lightly re-badged version of acronis) and had the same thing. Hence the question.
I have resolved it now by editing the realmode cdrom driver in the boot image on my ghost recovery disc, so all is sweet again - no need for acronis.

It's most likely using volume shadow copy. Most sector by sector imaging solutions use VSS to create images while still in windows.

I found that HT is selling it for $75 right now. Does anyone know a cheaper source for the hard copy. I found a site for download from acronis.com.au for $49.99 but I think I'd prefer the proper hard version.

Does Acronis reboot before it does a backup? A partition/disk backup.

I think it does. Not sure 100% though. Why? I think it would back up all the same, regardless of what apps/processes you're running at that time. Not sure though.
It reboots when it's restoring. I know that 100% :P

Just download it and Burn it to a CD, its still the same as the Hard Version, that's all I do if I'm going to save money downloading..

Acronis does not need to reboot before it starts its image. It does use the VSS, so it doesn't matter if you have programs up and running.

With Ghost you do a Restore from the CD when you buy a hard copy. Surely you do the same with acronis true image?
If you download ATI how do you get the CD boot disk that allows one to do a full restore?
One can be in a situation that C Drive has nothing on it but one wants to do a full restore from a CD.
Thanks

You burn it. I have Acronis True Image 11. It works well. Only cost me $36 too. Had to download it myself though, but just need to back up the installation file to a CD and create an emergency CD and you're done.

If you have a Maxtor or Seagate HDD and are prepared to download 105MB then look here to get it for free forum-replies.cfm?t=836797

I have used both Ghost and ATI extensively. I found that if the hard drive you are trying to backup has errors a lot of the time Ghost will not image (just returns to windows with a backup failed message). However, ATI will sit and go over and over untill it reads the data (or at least pop up an error message). This process can often take a long time but at least it completes.

Agree with the majority of posters in this thread. Acronis gets my vote for a well designed and user friendly imaging package. I have been using ATI (V9 & V10) and Disk Director extensively. ;-)

Have been using ATI 11 Home and its been going great.
We use the Acronis Server at work for backing up our Servers and its never skipped a beat. We are very happy with it.
When one of our Servers died, we were able to use the universal restore function to recover our last backup of the server to a brand new HP server with completly different hardware. Saved us a sh#t load of time.

Another fan of Acronis Trueimage Home here, been using and upgrading since version 7 and it works extremely well. The Acronis recovery manager is also a lifesaver, just hit F11 on boot and start your restore. No need for a boot cd to recover your system. Have a read through this www.acronis.com.au/homec...oducts/trueimage and then download the trial and give it a go.
