Does anyone know if there are plans for a nextG blackberry anytime soon?

I'm really looking forward to one, I did use a blackberry previously but need the speed of nextG as a travelling internet connection. JasJam doesnt quiet cut it for email in my opinion.

A while ago I heard about mid 07, but cant find any information to support that.

Thanks :)

At this stage there hasn't been any info released on one, to my knowledge. The closest you can get at the moment would be the Palm Treo 750 or the Samsung Blackjack, but both are Windows based, with the Blackjack arguably the most Blackberry-like. Both are capable of push email out of the box if your organisation runs Exchange.

If you don't like the way the Jasjam handles email, have you tried using emose. If you want remote updating of Outlook then this is the answer. Not just for the Jasjam but many phones and PDAs.

But who knows? The government might block Telstra from closing it in Jan, if services of nextg aren't capable yet.

I thought one of the reasons the NEXT G network wasn't quite up to scratch was due to CDMA still being used.

Hope this link helps.

I currently use a 7250 CDMA Blackberry and as the network is being closed on the 24th Jan 08, I thought I better upgrade. However, as the article explains there isn't currently a NextG option.

I rang Telstra and all they could say was bad luck and suggested a Palm Treo 750 or the Samsung Blackjack. Seems if you like Blackberry and you have a CDMA unit, you're pretty much stuffed. Thanks Telstra.

However they are not compatible with the telstra network yet. there are still bugs in the system despite there being blackberry codes in MNC. Hopefully will be fixed soon. Otherwise try the previously mentioned treo, q9 or blackjack (in that order for reception) and add GOOD email

I have been using the E51 with our BES for the past week on NextG and it works great. The SIM is NextG and BES enabled.

Blackberry connect can fill the void for now.
Any windows mobile five or six device is capable of running the blackberry software.
downside is it is very cpu intensive.
next g (hsdpa) blackberry not for a while yet.

Browsing speeds will only be increased when a connection speed is above 512kbps as web browsing via GPRS on a blackberry is done by the blackberry enterprise server and compressed into a smaller format thus reducing the size of the page, where as a winmob device fetch's it directly from the site.

Does this mean regardless of nextG release, and increased hsdpa bandwidth capacity, a BB will always be slightly slower than a comparable windows or symbian os device?

For the benefit of reduced internet usage how much outright speed do you lose?

quite the opposite.

you typically have a massive pipe (including caching etc...) accessible via your Blackberry Enterprise Server at your work. the server will do the browsing for you, then compress the data and encrypt it and send it down to the handheld.

so in effect if a next g handheld of any flavour and a blackberry on a BES with next g were to have a downloading race, the Blackberry would win in theory.

WAP will always be browsed directly through the mobile network and the Blackberry Internet Browsing service does the same as using a BES but through the RIM infrastructure in Canada(or RIM relay as i would assume)

I've been Blackberry'ing on NextG for a few months now and via a BES. JasJam is the answer, you can search on XDA-Developers to find out how. The recent backflip by Telstra in releasing a WM6 Rom for the JasJam might be pointing towards an 'official BB release' for this device.

Not sure I agree that browsing, via HSPDA, on the BB service is faster due to the compression, my experience is that the BB Browser is still quite slow (& considerably slower than using a standard browser).

Hey i was just searching for the same thing.

I've come across the blackberry pearl which says it works on the 850mhz band that the next g network uses.

has anyone perhaps got the new phone on the next g network?

www.discoverblackberry.c...11552s&HBX_OU=50

Quote from Link:

The BlackBerry Pearl provides Quad-Band network support on 850/900/1800/1900 MHz GSM/GPRS and EDGE* networks to allow for international roaming between North America, Europe and Asia Pacific.

Is this the phone we've all been after?

No.

The Pearl is a GSM device. Next G is an 850Mhz UMTS (with HSDPA) network.

It's just all becoming a little confusing with overlapping frequencies on GSM and 3G networks.

From the mouth of my Telstra rep.

There had initially been rumor of December but I talked to them in November and it was said 'May / June'.

When it comes down to it, it will be when RIM is happy with a device.
As we know, they don't release a device till they are 100% happy with it.

If you wanted to sign a NDA with RIM and Telstra, they'd tell you more.

Last time I asked Telstra (October) they told me that they didn't supported blackberry on NextG and the BB plan weren't available on NextG.
They told me that if I wanted push email, I would have to use on of their MS system

So has people managed to enable the BB APN with their nextG device?

There's a couple of NextG devices which have "BlackBerry connect" - the Nokia E51, as you say, and also the Palm Treo 750 - although, note, only with Windows Mobile 5. For whatever reason, BlackBerry Connect doesn't come with the WM6 upgrade to the Treo 750 nor appears to be downloadable.

Of course, with BlackBerry Connect, you get the push e-mail aspect, but you lose some other features that the native BlackBerry offers.

Ok... Blackberry Connect devices (i.e. non RIM manufatured devices) that use 3G have been out for a long time now.

I believe the initial discussion was around the RIM manufactured devices having 3/3.5G capabilites.

Nearly any windows mobile device sold in Australia can have Blackberry Connect installed on it, aswell as a handful of Nokia's, the Treo etc....

Of course, the trick here is to find a nice T-shop/dealer to provision the BIS/BES plan for you. That is unless the big T have started supporting WM5/6 Blackberry Connect...

I have to admit that I know very little about NextG (or blackberries for that matter) but my work has just replaced it's CDMA blackberries.

My boss got a blackberry 8800 and it came with a NextG sim card.

I said this was strange as I had heard that there wasn't a NextG blackberry out yet. I sent a sms to my mate at telstra seeking clarification and he said that he is using his blackberry on NextG.

The phone does say EDGE on it's display - what does that mean? Is there something on the phone I can look to confirm it is on NextG?

NextG Sim Cards can also operate on the Telstra/3 2100mhz UMTS network, and Telstra's GSM/GPRS/EDGE network. The Blackberry 8800 isn't operating on the NextG/UMTS850 network.
