Im looking for the catch too.

Basicly you are getting free connection and 75% of listed price over the contract term.
For my needs the phone bundle product isnt very attractive.

Well i just signed up with them now on a 12 month contract, this offer is too good to refuse and from what i've read here on Whirlpool Spin seems pretty decent. If everything goes well, hopefully this will be my last month with Exehell and i can leave the ADSL1 world behind...

Hi Sgt,

Unfortunately this is a new deal we've negotiated with our wholesaler for new orders commencing March29th. I know this will upset a few customers but, the time frame is out of our hands. ISP's come out will deals once and a while and this is one of the downsides of a great deal...the customers who misses it before and after. Sorry, again.

2 quick questions:

If I went with the 20GB plan is there a penalty to upgrade to the 40GB?
Can I change plans mid month? (I would HATE to be stuck on dial up speeds waiting for a month to end but I have no idea how much we would use the internet if we were less concerned about download limits - am currently on bigpond liberty)

Cheers

Bill,

What is the fee for relocation during the contact term? Or is that treated as a cancellation of contract & resulting early termination fees?

No, you just put the request in a email to accounts@ and the change happens on your next billing date which is the 1st.

Can I change plans mid month?

No. Just log-in to user services to check your usage and average it out. Or my personally favourite. Pick the higher plan and go down from there. 8-)

hey Bill.

seems the guys who redid the new web pages forgot to put that information on like it was on the old pages.

.You may change data plans throughout your contract for the following month.

.Line speed changes can also be changed for a fee of $33 at any time, eg from 256 to 512.

.You may move your adsl to another location at any time for a fee of $99.
($150 if less than 6 months from start date or last relocation date)

i assume none of that has changed ? may be an idea to get the web guys to add it to the pricing page under the "things to know" section.

That wouldn't be relevant to ADSL2+ would it? Seeing as how everyone's on the same (max) speeds.

still the other 2 are relevant and it would be a good idea to save people having to ask to have it on the actual web pages. for both adsl1 and adsl2.

I'm a bit concerned about this in Spin's T&Cs:

2.3 Our charges to You may involve fees for connection, initiation, transfer, relocation or cancellation of any Service(s). Such charges, if not specified in accordance with the rate plan or such other manner specified in Your Agreement will be charged to You at cost to Us from the Carrier.

This seems to indicate that if I say need to relocate during the term, they can pretty much charge me whatever Optus charges them, if Optus charges $300, I get charged $300, and they really don't have any control over it, as it's not specified anywhere.

To confrim, we charge you the customer as your relationship is with us.

Relocation fees are as follows-

If you move to another ADSL2+ exchange is it $99

If you move to a non ADSL2+ the fee is $300.

I am considering taking advantage of the free activation and free 3 months on a 12 month contract adsl2 with spin. My question however is regarding the setup fee. I am currently with bigpond cable and so I have a cable modem and will need a new one for adsl2. Is this provided and how much will it cost? I have a phone line next to the computer from the old dial-up days so that should not be a problem but would like to know exactly how much changing to spin will cost me. Thanks you.

Jonathan.

You will have to get a modem separately, it is not included in the deal - not sure if any ISP offers free modems on ADSL2+

I have been told I cannot joint ADSL2+ with Spin because of no port. If I want to churn by ADSL1 to Spin, can I still get rebate from the following website: www.cormain.com.au/store...=on&ppinc=detail

or is the rebate only apply for new ADSL1 installation?

Thanks

And I'm sure its an excellent product but its not as "special" as your current ADSL2 offerings.

You wouldn't think that in 2007 in suburban Melbourne it'd be so hard to solve one's communications issues. At the moment we have BP cable and two mobiles, no home phone connected. Ive got a shiny new colour multi function laser, and would'nt mind sending the odd fax, I'm also a bit over the lack of value from Telstra. So ADSL2 comes along and I think to my self "I'll bundle up a new phone line and the best value ADSL2 deal I can get, should be just a phone call away." How wrong was I. I rang Comcen and my 2nd and 3rd choices after the usual plan research and none have any ports free. Optus also do not have cable in our street.

Anyway I'll have a think about the 8mb plan as a stop gap measure.

Bill,

I went to check your web site and surprisingly the port availability at Epping, NSW, changed from No PORT to limited port availability. I don't know what does that mean, but I have already submitted the applications.

However I have a bit problem. Initially I tried spin.net, my online application was cut in the middle of process. I then tried to go to comcen.com, my application was again cut. I waited for several hours and tried spin.net again, and I then could complete the applications. I got a e-mail to confirm that. So do you think my application of ADSL2+ has gone through?

What is the chance for me to get a 'port'?

Regards,

Hi Bill,

I'm currently on ADSL1, if I switch to Comcen/Spin ADSL2, what's the estimated downtime? I'm a heavy user and rely on Internet to do work so major downtimes will kill me.

Thanks!

------------------------

EDIT: Do I need new ADSL2 filters or do the ADSL1 filters work well? The filters are all from the modem/router I bought. Currently using a Netgear DG834Gv2, it shouldn't have any issues with ADSL2 should it?

------------------------

EDIT2: Could someone tell me how the speed is like with Comcen/Spin ADSL2? I'm currently using 8M ADSL1 and the speed is really fine. I don't want to 'upgrade' to ADSL2 and see a drop of performance. :)

I'm not Bill, but im better looking and prepared to help ;) ;) Moving from ADSL 1 to ADSL 2 takes about 10 days to 2 weeks on average. Your downtime should be nomore than 15-20 minutes, and your phone is done at the same time assuming you're bundling.

Do I need new ADSL2 filters or do the ADSL1 filters work well? The filters are all from the modem/router I bought. Currently using a Netgear DG834Gv2, it shouldn't have any issues with ADSL2 should it?

ADSL 1 filters will work. However, if you're getting a faster sync speed when your modem is isolated from other devices, then your filter may be letting noise in. There is offical ADSL 2 filters, which in my case made a different of about half a mb higher sync speed. ACS makes them, and they are $18.50 from warcom.com.au. - I recommend them and seem helped for me.

Could someone tell me how the speed is like with Comcen/Spin ADSL2? I'm currently using 8M ADSL1 and the speed is really fine. I don't want to 'upgrade' to ADSL2 and see a drop of performance. :)

I went from Westnet 8mb ADSL 1 to Comcen ADSL 2. If you don't max out ADSL 1, you wont get a better speed with ADSL 2 normally. What is your line attentuation to determine what sort of speeds you will get? Sync speed is not determined by Comcen (though they can lower it at their end if you ask) but your modem, distance, line quality etc.

You won't get a drop in performance. My modem sync's faster in G.DMT mode (ADSL 1) than ADSL 2 mode, but its possible thats fairly exclusive to the Billion 7300 as others are having same problem amoung a rang of ISPs.

I moved from iiNet ADSL1 to Spin's ADSL2 and i saw my SNR margins drops by a bit and my attentuation go up also. Ive ordered myself a new Billion 7300 router and new ACS ADSL2 filters, hopefully this will help me as im getting constant dropouts

i live ~3.5km from my exchange and im quite happy with my sync and speeds, best sync so far is 5.7mbit, i can download at 550kb/s from fast local servers aswell

so all in all im quite happy with the speeds and spin except the dropouts ive been getting -- hopefully my new ADSL2 hardware will fix it

Sent a number of emails asking for a date of activation (with CC to billmc@), called today to find out, waited for 12 minutes and only thing I’ve heard 10 times was a commercial and some sort of support information.

Hope to get a reply though.

Wow thank you so much for the responses Pleasure Paulie and TracidTrax, really appreciate them! :D

FYI my 8M ADSL1 connection is connected at 7616 kbps, which is pretty much the maximum we can get (I know there are some people who can get a higher sync speed but that's rare).

Line Attenuation 25 db 8.5 db
Noise Margin 12 db 24 db

I think I'm about 1km or less from the exchange.

The dilemma is, as you probably have noticed, I am currently with Internode, which is a superb ISP and I am very happy with it. 'If things ain't broken then don't fix 'em!' However, being a heavy user (although not a heavy downloader), ADSL2 is really attractive.

I will switch only if I can be assured that the connection I get with Comcen/Spin will be at least on par with the one I'm using now. I know it may sound arrogant but the fact is that I had a very bad experience with churning out to other ISPs. Eventually it wasted me $200+ and I had to churn back to Internode. :(

25 line attentuation. Do you max out with JUST the modem connected? You have a fair bit of noise on ur line. If you max out 8mb with JUST the modem, get yourself another filter Asap!

My old bud Kendal (posts in here) just moved over from Internode to Comcen after me (I assume I was a test bunny for him). If you check some posts, he says they are pretty much the same speed wise as Node, just no usenet which he misses.

It's been pretty decent for me so far - a few speed issues, but seem to be fixed now. ADSL 2 with comcen is saving me atleast $40 a month compared with 8mb ADSL 1, so I'm happy!

I just want to know the ETA. Is it taking 10 working days just to find that out?

What do you mean by 'just the modem'? Currently I have one router (DG834G), one VoIP router, and one phone connected on the line. A filter is being used to split the line to the router and the VoIP router.

That's cool, I don't use Usenet anyway. :-) However I do need speed to overseas websites, especially the Asia region. I know Internode has very strong international connections, not sure about Comcen/Spin? Are they using the Optus network?

ADSL 2 with comcen is saving me atleast $40 a month compared with 8mb ADSL 1, so I'm happy!

This is part of my motivation too! Although it won't save me much since I have to bundle the phone (am currently on Tel$tra with concession).

Remove, the splitter and plug the moden into the line without any phone. RE-sync and see if its faster than normal.

They seem pretty decent (today anyway). I'm not sure who they use, but one of their suppliers is Asianet I believe, which I think iinet use as well.

I think I've done this before, and it synced at the same speed (7616kbps). Is this a good or bad thing?

That's strange. Why would Optus not allow that, when Telstra do...? Have you tried contacting Comcen directly, they "MAY" have different obligations/rules only being a Optus wholesaler..

The person you talked to is full of it. Those rules apply to Cable only. Call Comcen/Spin - they know what they're doing :)

Thanks guys! I just went to the Optus website, and did an online test of my eligibility of getting the DSL Direct and Local Direct, and guess what, it says I'm eligible! Although it still could be that the online database is not very accurate?

I will give Comcen/Spin a call next week. :)

I just did some maths and found out that the Comcen/Spin offer worked out to be cheaper than the Optus one on a 12-month contract.

P.S. If I sign up with Comcen/Spin, do I get any discounts for the line rental if we have pension concession? And do the phone+ADSL2 services have to be in one person's name? I'm asking this because I want the phone to be in my mum's name and the ADSL in my name.

Def. Call Comcen about the first question as I know Telstra do offer cheaper line rental sometimes in those circumstances. But I would not be expecting much.

When you sign up for ADSL 2 and Phone, you choose a name for each. I assume those can be different. But you may find the phone has to be in the name of the person whom the line is currently under.

Incorrect. This is accounts question and needs to be answered by accounts staff. It's a yes/no answer, depends on a few different things.

Sorry to hear that. We don't like that either as we lose a sale. Sounds like a Rim maybe.

Worse case you can get 8M. If your on a Rim, that would max at 3M. Still fast.

Indeed, there's still a big red box advertising the offer on their front page.

As I said. It should be called "the never ending sale". If you're going to not end it, just say "limited time only" not have a dynamic date which changes when the previous one has expired.

Filled out the online order form for ADSL2+ bundled with a new home phone line.

Received a confirmation email at 11:10 am with my order number.

Received an SMS at 3:20 pm advising of date due for completion, 21/5/07.

Received an email at 3:25 advising same details as the SMS.

Just sit back and wait now I guess.

My fax rang at about 10.30 am today, right on schedule for the 21st ETA. About 1/2 hour later a Telstra tech came to the door, asked me if my fax was plugged into the line, I told him yes(I couldn't answer it as there's no handset on that line), he said "excellent your lines working then" and took off.

I plugged in the modem and it sync'd at 10mbs. Had to take off on site for the afternoon and got back in at about 4.30. Hadn't heard anything from Comcen so I thought I'd give them a call, even though it wasn't critical that ADSL be working today. Got through straight away and asked the guy what my user name and password would be. He said it would be in my original order confirmation email and waited on the phone while I checked, yep it was there from 2 weeks ago. Said thanks and went off to configure the modem. Didn't authenticate so I thought I better read the instructions on the website.

Ok so I need to know my new phone number to use for my username to authenticate. Rang up Comcen again and had to wait about 10 minutes this time, rep looked up my phone number and off I went again.

Still no go and I thought they didn't seem too busy last time I rang so I'll ring again since I've been messing with it for 1/2 hour anyway. Spoke to a guy in orders straight away to check if the ADSL and phone accounts had been activated at the same time. He asked if the phone line was all good, told him yep, and he said he'd activate the adsl straight away and sms me username and password. SMS came through 5 minutes later with my phone number as username and some random password. Put those in and away we went. These details probably would've came through to me tomorrow or in due course, but I thougt it was worth a phone call and it was.

Started a 350 meg download from Easynews and it came down at exactly 1Meg a second, almost exactly the same speed as my Bigpond cable. While I've got the 2 connections active I'm gonna do some comparative speed and ping tests and post them in the appropriate forum.

Righto I give up, is the default user email address automatically setup on account activation or do you have to create it? And which password do you use, the one you nominated originally on application or the one sent through on account activation? Other wise everything is running sweet.

Remember it wont work for 48 hours your account. You should use the password for the account name you setup while signing up. The username you get for your modem (telephone number) should be different. I rang up and made them to the same so I do not forget :)

Unfortunately it was confirmed again that there is no port.

Why Optus refuses to add more port there?

I don't think it's a case of them refusing. Just they have to weight the pro'$ and con'$ of adding new exchanges or adding more ports to current exchanges.

Someone's going to be unhappy somewhere. I've also see some exchanges sellout very quickly. One exchange did 300+ in 1 month. That's a busy exchange.
