Well, I start this thread for those who don't want to read through the long discussion topic just to find out the basic informations and also because there are quite a few separated threads asking about Xseries with non-branded phones or phones not in Three compatible list.

1- What if you have a non-branded 3G phone or 3G phone which is not in Three official supported handset list?
- You will not see X-series listed in the Value Packs in My3 Home. Even if you see it listed then you still cannot sign up for Xseries. You will get an error message "Your phone is not supported".

Solution: You need to call 3 Customer Care and ask the operator to add Xseries pack for you. They will tell you that your phone is not compatible, you cannot use all the features of Xseries, blah blah.... If you are happy with just all the features that your phone supported or just want to use the data service for internet access then you can just tell them that you are aware of that and you don't mind that you cannot use all the features, and just tell them to go ahead and sign you up.
You can call 3Care number 133320, it's 24h service so don't need to care about the number on Three Xseries website since it's not 24h service.

2- Is there any contract for Xseries?
- Xseries subscription is just a monthly subscription, and you can cancel your subscription at any time. There is no contract for Xseries subscription!!. When you request to cancel your Xseries subscription, you can still use it until the date your subscription ends since you have paid for it.

3- Any what kind of Xseries features can I expect if I don't have a compatible handset or a non-branded one?
- Non-branded handset will not have Three certificates, so you will not be able to install Yahoo Messenger and MSN Messenger. However, you can install and use 3rd party Messenger software. That will comes out of your included data usage for your Xseries plan. But it will not cost you much of data usage since it's just some text.
- Basic features with all 3G phones most of the services accessed using web browser will be available to all 3G phones. i.e Ebay, Bumper Pack, Cricket TV, Info, Entertainment Pack... and even Orb can be used with some non-compatible phones as well since you will access your file using your phone's web browser.

- Skype: As what I can see, the way 3 modified Skype client (actually it is a modified iSkoot client) works is similar to Web Call Back feature of some VoIP service provider (i.e PennyTel). When you make a Skype call, what happens is you will receive a calls from "Skype calls" number (+61430005332) (this number is added automatically when you install the Symbian Skype client) then you will hear a ringing tone waiting for the other person to pick up your Skype call.
Interesting thing: calling that "Skype Call" number will execute your last Skype call.

So what this modified Skype client does is submitting your phone number and the other person Skype ID to Three server, then Three server will generate the call and connect 2 calls. Your Skype calls does not actually happen in your Skype clients, it is purely a voice call from Three server, and the Skype client is just a Web Call Back submission form.
When someone calls your Skype, you will also receive a voice call from "Skype Call" number.

If you have a Symbian S60 v3 (Symbian OS 9.1) phones, then you can download Three Skype client and install to your phone (if your phone is not in compatible list then you will not see the Skype download link in Planet3 even though your phone has the same Symbian OS 9.1).
www.ozmobiles.net/Three/Skype.sisx
So if you have a N91, N80... mobile then YES you can use Skype with your phone, and this will be not counted toward your data usage but will be counted toward Skype minutes of your Xseries plan.

- PPC, Windows Mobile phone owner: So because of this nature of Skype call with Three, there will be no gateway or setting or whatsoever to input into your Windows Mobiles Skype client. Maybe you should wait until Three release a WebCallBack Skype client for Windows Mobile. :-)

So with only $20, I think it's not too bad since you can get a lots of services: checking weather, reading news, viewing movie trailers, checking movie sessions, ebay...etc... Mobile Mail is also included, so you can send and receive unlimited emails. For emails sending using your 3 Email account, I guess it is not counted toward your data usage, but emails sending using non-3 email accounts will be counted toward your data usage.

What if I go over my monthly quota?
- You will pay 10c per MB

Are uploads counted?
- Yes

What APN/connection should I use?
- 3services/Planet 3

For what I have tried, I guess there's kind of proxy for 3services APN, 3netaccess is direct internet access. So if you want to make VoIP calls using SIP client and your 3G data connection (i.e using Fring) then you will need to select 3netaccess in Fring setting, 3services will not work with Fring.

If you go outside of your 'broadband zone' eg. roam to telstra gprs data is charged at $1.65/MB & is NOT part of your quota

Um your handset is attached to your account.

I just made a call to 3 india and was told nope you can't purchase X-Series you need a HSDPA handset.

and at the moment there is no X-Series handset that does the job that I need it to do.

Maybe the LG U830, but disappointing it does not have a memory card slot.

all I want is the mobile data and UMTS broadband speed, that will keep people in check that they don't go over their allowance, don't care about the other features of X-Series.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?

Two of the four 'X-Series compatible' handsets on Three web site do not have HSDPA support (both Nokias).

Just tell them you've bought a Dopod D810 off Ebay or from a former Three customer, and you will be using it!

I just tried it and got added. I had to repeat that I didn't care that I wouldn't be able to use all of the features four times, but I got there in the end.

I'm not going to do any happy dances until I see X-series on my account summary, but I think that it will all be there :)

Not unless you have access to non approved service manager program which can mod the network the network settings.

The only one I know of is for the following LG handsets which works both ways:

Make the handset UMTS only

Make the handset GSM only, and also change the GPRS class type A,B and C and which GSM signal to tune into (i.e.: GSM900, GSM1800 and GSM1900 not used here)

Class A is to have GSM 1800 voice and GPRS 1800 data
Class B is to have GSM 900 voice and GPRS 900 data (comes in very handy when roaming as you get greater signal distance)
Class C is to only have separate GSM 900 voice and GPRS data (basically when your on data you can't receive calls, similar to the Dopod 838 pro / jasjam handsets with the current firmware)

LG U890
LG U880
LG U300

Their might be similar software for Nokia and SE handsets, best place to try is gsmhosting.com and look in the sub forums for each handset maker.

Of course the service manager program is not approved for use by Three

A mate of mine just got a dopod 810 on friday and signed up for the x-series silver pack in store as well. In the account management section of My3 it lists the silver pack correctly under the "my value packs" section, but whenever trying to go to google or ORB etc, a screen comes up saying you need to buy a value pack to access internet, but then when you click on the "sign up" link it goes to another page saying "you have already signed up for a pack click here to get started" which takes you back to the screen where you select google etc which then again takes you to the "you need to buy a pack" screen.

Just going around and around in circles... Anyone else had this happen? Any ideas?

No. You can only make and receive Skype to Skype voice calls.

This is from xseries.three.com.au/xse..._knowledge.shtml

On another note ....
If you wish to do what you asked , you will have to download the Skype Application for PPC ( if you have that type of hardware ). In this case it will not count towards your "Skype time" but rather your data allowance.

You may consider installing a SIP application and have a look at Pennytel for VoIP calls ( search the VoIP sub-forum ) ... and better prices ... or Pennytels ANI callback feature.

Cheers

EDIT
I would like to add that "3" seem to have gone into a lot of detail about the service , functions , setup ... etc... for the X-series in the above link.
It may be worth looking at that first before posting questions here.

Here is a description below:
High-Speed Circuit-Switched Data (HSCSD), is a development of Circuit Switched Data (CSD), the original data transmission mechanism of the GSM network. HSCSD uses different coding methods and even multiple time slots to increase data throughput. It allows maximum transfer rates (using four time slots) up to 57.6 kbit/s and, even in the bad radio conditions will still lead to a four times speed increase over CSD

Nokia N73

Lg U830

Some people have called 3 care to activate the pack when using non supported handsets. But that will likely mean all usage will come out of your data allowance.

Not quite correct. If you have a Symbian S60 v3 (Symbian OS 9.1) phone but is not in compatible list, then you still can install Three Skype client, I have uploaded Three Skype client and put the link in my FAQ post. You can download and install that client and you will be able to use your Skype minutes. For all other phones which is not Symbian 9.1 platform (Windows Mobile platform, i.e Dopod...) then you need to use other Skype clients and it will use your data allocation since the Skype call will be made using that client not like when your are using Three client (you will receive a call back). Because of the nature of Three Skype client (WebCallBack), there is no work around for any other Skype clients.
Any other features like Yahoo, MSN messenger..., you need to re-read this FAQ.

So if you want to make VoIP calls using SIP client and your 3G data connection (i.e using Fring) then you will need to select 3netaccess in Fring setting, 3services will not work with Fring.

Sorry for wrong information here, there is no proxy whatsoever on Planet3. I found out the reason why I could not use Fring with 3services APN. It's because I have not subscribe to Mobile Web Pack before on my account.

So for those who get the error message ask you to activate Mobile Web Pack even though you have subscribe to X-series, then the solution is you can use 3netaccess APN instead of 3services or call 3Care and they will fix it for you.

Interesting finding: If you have ever used Mobile Web Pack and even you unsubscribe for the pack now, you will find that you can browse the internet using 3sevices APN.
Note: normally, you will be redirected to Mobile Web Pack subscription page if you try to browse the internet and haven't subscribe to Mobile Web Pack. However, you will always be able to browse the internet with 3netaccess APN !!!

The only inconvenience with 3netaccess APN is that you will not be able to access Planet 3 (three.net.au) since that domain name is intranet one and cannot be resolved for IP address on the internet. So now Three has made it more convenient for you, you can just need to use 3services APN and you will be able to browse net + Planet3, but because initially, 3services APN internet access is disabled, so you need to enable it either by using Mobile Web Pack before or need to call 3Care and they will enable it for you. If you don't subscribe to any data plan (i.e Mobile Web Pack or Xseries), then you will be charged for casual data rate when you use 3services or 3netaccess APN.

Just tell them you have an N73 or something and they will add you, then give it a go.

If it doesnt work, unsuscribe.

But from what I hear, your phone software has to be branded or upgraded to work with 3 xseries, but im wondering if this is only for specific applications.

I think there should be no problem putting you on the plan just for pure data usage.

OK, since you guys having trouble getting X-Series, I will show you guys a way to add X-series without having to call 3Care, and don't even need to have a compatible handset. You can do it by yourself, and it only take 30s to do it. I thought you guys can just call 3Care and activate it without hassle so I didn't put this in my original FAQ.

1/ Download Firefox if you don't have it installed in your PC.
www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox

2/ Install an add-on called "User-Agent Switcher"

3/ Now in "Tool" menu of Firefox, you will have a new option "User Agent Switcher". Select "Options" from "User Agent Switcher" menu.
Tool > User Agent Switcher > Options > Options

4/ Select "User Agents" from the pop up windows, and click on "Add". Fill in the following details:

Description: N73
User Agent: NokiaN73-1/2.0628.0.0.1 S60/3.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1

You can leave all other fields blank.

5/ Now connect your phone to PC, and follow the manual of your phone to connect the phone as a modem. Follow your phone's manual to connect your PC to the internet using 3services APN with your phone as a modem.

6/ Open Firefox and go to Planet3 page at
http:\\three.net.au

or if you are lazy then you can copy this link and go directly to Value Pack page
http:\\msdf.three.net.au/checker/m portal/contentpack.jsp

Note: these links are Three intranet link, you need to connect using 3services APN to be able to access those links. I have modified the link so you won't click on it :-) just copy the link to Firefox address bar and change \\ to //

7/ Now you can do it yourself, just click on Xseries, and choose the pack you want and Sign up.

You can also have a look at Planet3 page, and you will have an idea of what N73 users see on their Planet3 ;-). The icons and link on Planet3 will change depends on your phone's User Agent. Now you can see Skype link on Planet3 even though you don't have N73 phone ;-)

Hehe, I guess I have reduced the work load for 3Care quite a bit with this post :-)

Yes, you need 3 branded phone to have 3 certificates to install Yahoo and MSN Messenger only.

No, by default 3services APN cannot access internet. If you activate your Xseries by calling 3Care then the operator may activate that for you. Or you have some how did it by using some other packs in the past. Or maybe some new 3 accounts got it activated when they connect to 3 ;-)But I'm quite sure most of users who never use any pack on Planet3 will not have internet access with 3services APN.

Although it was 100% correct some time ago, it's not the case anymore. Now 3services APN will give you full unrestricted Internet access on any plan, with or without Mobile Web/X-Series.

Three are actually getting rid of 3netaccess APN altogether, you won't find it on any new phones now.

Tell you what, I still cannot access internet using 3services, because I have never used any Web Pack on my account. When I access any non-3 site, I will be redirected to Mobile Web Pack subscription page even though I'm having Xseries pack subscription.

I don't bother calling 3Care since it maybe a good idea to leave it that way so I will not access internet by accident. I just change to 3netaccess APN if I want to access internet.

There's no SMS, just go to "Value Pack" page in My3 and to confirm your Xseries pack has been added. If your Xseries pack is there then you can start using Xseries already :-)

so i guess i can start playing now...wow...all in 5mins
If you have already have Firefox install, then you just need to install User Agent Switcher, then I think it takes less than 5mins ;-)

The reason I subscribe to Xseries is data usage. This Xseries thing is even cheaper than 1 month dial up + local calls charge to dial. Currently I have no internet and no home phone :-( and now I'm browsing using my Three phone on Xseries. I have to turn off image display to save data usage but still I think counting upload and download kill my data plan quite fast. Anyway it's still better then 10M web pack and alot better than Optus. I was charged $50 for ~7MB usage with Optus :-(, still haven't checked my bill yet to see why they charge me so much.

When I signed up, I have told them that I have a non-3 N73 (I'm using Optus N91) to avoid hassles and the operator then just signed me up so I think you guys will not have problem with signing up so I didn't put up this method in my first post :-) But it seems like I need to do it at the end ;-)

Can you theoretically put your x-series sim into a netconnect card and use the data limits off that?

If so it may be a good battery saver!

No an issue with the LG U880 as it has USB battery charging.

i assume you are using BT to connect to your computer.
that mens your n91 is now doing 3G signals + BT at the same time
guess that explains the massive drain

No, I use USB cable since bluetooth connection is not stable. Bluetooth is currently off since bluetooth consumes battery a lot and I rarely use it anyway. Actually the battery was in near full (1 bar from full), and I use it as modem for more than 2h I think. But still the battery was drained quite fast. I think even with a fully charge, the connection can last only about 4 hours only.

That's what I've heard as well, from more than one source.

Heh, if only. My less-than-a-week-old Nokia N73 still has both 3netaccess and 3services specified in the connection settings. I'm sure they're getting there though... ;)

Also, regarding the whole issue of getting an SMS when you sign up for X-Series, I signed up to X-Series from my N73 on a Saturday and the sign-up page informed me that it may take up to 24 hours to enable web access and that I would receive an SMS when it is set up. Alas, only a few minutes later I got an SMS confirming it was enabled, which asked me to turn my phone off and then back on. I'm of course, not suggesting that this will happen for everyone (I don't know what triggers it).

(Nautilus, can I just kindly point out that just because in your experience certain things happen, it doesn't automatically mean everyone else will see/get the same thing. :D)

about the SMS when I sign up for Xseries I didn't receive any SMS, but I did receive SMS when I signed up for Mobile Web Pack before (about 20 mins after sign up). So I suspect that when you signed up for Xseries the operator has also enabled Mobile Web access (similar to the progress of Mobile Web Pack enable I think) so you got a SMS. I suggest you to read the SMS again to see if it's about Mobile Web Pack enable, or Xseries enable. I guess if Mobile Web access is not enable but only Xseries then you won't get a SMS and also cannot access internet using 3services APN.

For accessing internet through 3services APN, Three has done that for quite a while (I think since they have Mobile Web Pack), maybe things changed now, but still some ppl still complaint here that they could not access internet using 3services even after they signed up for Xseries, including me.

Where did you get that from?

The iinet promotion page says "iiNet won't count the stuff you access via your X-Series mobile towards your home broadband quota." It doesn't say 3 won't count data against your X-series quota.

Overall this is hardly much of an offer seeing as iinet doesn't count uploads unaway.

ive got a Dopod 838pro and had the 29 dollar broadband pack.
over the last few weeks ive been asking 3stores and 3care about x-series and my phone. they had all said no, cant do it, un-supported handset.

But today when my cap started over, and the broadband pack finished (at my request) I RANG 3CARE and asked for the x series platinum pack (2gb of data). the Guy at 3care told me that i could sign up but i had to understand that i could only use the data allowance, that sykpe, MSN nor yahoo would not work and would all come out of my data. i happily accepted that and im now using writting this message via my powerbook throught my dopod838pro BT internet connection. YAY

So in conclusion, if u want X-Series, ring 3care tell them which x series plan and then tell them "i fully understand that my handset is un-compatible but i just want to use the data allowance". that worked for me

PS: seems that all p2p works :)

im getting around 40 to 50 KB per second. this is in a HSDPA area (adelaide) with three bars, so the 147KB per second seems to be quite high but i believe its bluetooth that is causing the problem. i think i could get faster if it was through usb and not bluetooth, there seems to be a ceiling of 70 KB max throughput. but overall im content.

for monitoring your usage i use spd gprs moniter, as three dont seem to be quite acurate. the only bad part is it does include planet 3 data usage, so it could throw it out depending on how much you use planet 3

If you don't sign up to any pack then data usage will not be showing up in My3, but you will notice the current spending increases and you have to wait until you get bill to see the data usage. The charge maybe up to 2 days delay.
So yeah, like you get it for free... you wish :-p

i was going to buy the e65 until i saw that it doesnt have front camera for video calling. anyway i will just go with the stock slide fone the 6288 as its free on the 29 plan. would it be possible to get x-series just for the data on this fone? im worried because its nokia 40 software it might not have a proper browser? or can i download java programs that tailor the fone to my needs? cheers. i was going to get the prepaid 6280 until i saw it doesnt support x-series OR 5 dollar 10mb data pack. that sucks as i would like to use google or wiki when i have to. or just looking up the odd few things. anyway i need something. paying 20 bux for 500 meg seems more attractive than 5 bux for 10 meg anyway. essentially on a plan i would pay minimum 20 for plan, 0 for fone and 20 for x-series which is 40 bux per month. not too shabby. and i know i wont go over 49 bux. very handy. i dont think i would go over 500meg so thats not an issue. im just concerned about the roaming charge. is there any way to lock the 6288 to umts only unless otherwise specified? cheers

Your mobile connects to ORB's servers.
ORB then connects to your pc via your normal internet connection.

If you're phone isn't in the zone then you are on "roaming" so won't you be charged for the data, rather than it coming out of your X-Series limit?

You can sign up to 3 if your work address is in one of their zones - so maybe try give them your work address?
