What is a Download?

We get this question alot in sales. Many people think a download is only something like a song or movie clip or software update.

A download is actually any information that is sent to your computer from the internet.

For example if you look at a newspaper site a temporary copy of the page with its text & pictures is downloaded to your computer.

This page may only be 1 (mb) megabyte in size but it counts towards your loadload limit for your plan which maybe 500 mb per month for example

Welcome to the Spin Internet Official FAQ thread

Ok, does this mean that Whirlpool is considered an OFFICAL support medium now? Some ISP's consider it as such while others don't so it would be nice to clear this up and to outline the things that will and won't be resolved here Vs the more traditional support channels.

No not official but this is the best place to ask a question if you use whirlpool.

Our official support is always going to support@spin.net.au because we can track the question or call us on 1300 300 324

I see this as the sort of place mainly new users can go to get answer to a question such as the downloading one I did. We get a lot of calls with questions that to experienced users are obvious but to new users it is a mystery.

Just gives them a place they can ask it & we can reply when we get a chance.

Good to know as many people seem to be treating Whirlpool as a substitute to the normal support methods instead of a supplement to them.

Hi Tim,

I wonder if the broadband is available in Hobart, TAS - Sandy Bay.

Right now I'm getting sick about Dodo after I gave up using BigPond. There are 23 days since I've paid for ADSL and the service is showed as installed since 1 week ago. During this week I couldn't get a connection; I've called the technical support countless times, the problem is escalated each time and Telstra technicians are doing almost nothing (they tell Dodo that they found something and fixed it, Dodo calls me and we're going through the same routine again and again and the problem goes to another technician ... and so on ... and again, and again ... and I'm still waiting).

I don't know why nobody seem to care about customers?
A new customer is not important??

So - my intention is to find a better ISP and to become a good customer.

HI,
Which broadband are you asking about?

ADSL1 would be available if you have been using another provider for it, you can get upto 1500 with Spin/Comcen.

As for adsl2 depends on if the exchange you go through has been updated.

I am sure Tim or someone will let you know shortly.

cheers

yes they do and i see no mention of "not for Tas" as some other ISPs do.

the sandy bay exchange is adsl1 active i see(from adsl2exchanges web site) and probably has been for a long time. just go to spins main webpage and enter your phone number and it will tell you if you can get adsl if you are still concerned about that.

it is possible that telstra has run in to some problems with your connection i must say. it is a bit worrying that it is taking so long however.

heres a quick adsl2 exchange status in Tas for those interested.
www.adsl2exchanges.com.a...php?Location=TAS

hmm dont hold your breath for adsl2 here.

Thank you all for replies.

I just checked on spin.net page and it shows that ADSL is available at SandyBay Exchange ...
But ... I guess Bill McArthur knows better.

In this case I will try to see maybe Internode has something available.

Bill replied about adsl2 if you look again. internode are not going to be any different i would think. the only ISP looking at, it says "under investigation", for sandy bay is netspace. which doesnt mean it will be done anytime soon, if at all. you can also go search there own section on here to see how their Tas performance has been in the past if you decide to think waiting for them.

since you are after adsl1 and infact dodo have said you are "connected" there should be no problem churning to Spin.

so ? NOBODY does adsl2 on the sandy bay exchange. as for adsl1 then plenty of ISPs, including Comcen/Spin, DO. since its adsl1 that enaiman actually is interested in thats all that matters for him.

Hi,

I have just signed up for Spin's ADSL service. I am on a MAC and was trying to set up the connection last night and kept getting an 'authentication failed' message each time I tried to connect. I'm using the Dynalink RTA1320 modem.

I have to say the detail of set-up instructions supplied were disappointing, almost non-existent. Theres not much help on the Spin website either.

Can anyone help?

Thank you very much for your replies. You were very helpful.
I'm really thinking to go to Spin/Comcen. I don't know if I can qualify for something like "Transfer" or "Rapid Transfer" ... so far I haven't received even a single bit through my modem (the line is still dead), they are out of terms (21 days passed) and I am not on any plan (the choice was : no plan).
I hope I can qualify for a "Rapid Transfer" and my Internet connection to be active ... someday.

I'm assuming just like anyone else changing from another ADSL1 ISP, it will be about 15 mins downtime whilst the technician switches you over to a port capable of taking ADSL2 at the exchange.

Don't bother ringing, I have tried for 3 days to ring Spin and the phone rings and rings, 15+ minutes each time! If your going to make someone hold forever don't play the same repetitive iBurst commercial it drives people nuts and they not only hang up but give up on your service... After all I'm only returning your call to me!

You have my details and have tried to call me on my phone, several times unfortunately I'm not always near my phone and the server room has poor reception so I miss a lot of calls. I have sent an email and been given a job number...

But really when you leave no other means of contacting your sales staff about a sale other than to call a 1300 number that is saturated with calls, I'd hate to be wanting support for an outage! My complaints isn't against your staff, they have been excellent, the problem is getting in contact with one... you need more coverage. But if this is how a potential customer is treated makes me think twice about becoming a paying customer!

Hi,

I think there's a miscommunication somewhere. If you call 1300 303 375 and press the sales option you'll speak to a sales person shortly 1-2 minute tops. I actual have the sales que on my phone and if the sales guy are busy I'll pick up if it rings more than a minute. The sales line has been very quite all day today.

I'm glad we're trying to call you and sorry you can't get near your phone. I'll try and find out who's calling you so I can maybe pass on the info via WHIM.

If your calling SALES and waiting 15mins your not calling us. Try the above number.

If you are on a ADSL2+ with Iinet or TPG for that matter You'll need to disconnect because they're on SS (spectrum sharing).

If your on ADSL1 with anyone and looking to go on ADSL2+ your looking at the regular provisioning times for ADSL2+. The downtime is the normal 15 minutes to a hour.

Not sure but the rumour is optus - doesn't really matter because the adsl2+ wholesaler is only one factor in the connection.
Send an email to spin & they can do a number check. The checker on the website only tells you if the exchange is set up. You mentioned in another thread that optus had just got to your exchange so it may have not updated on their website yet.

got a call saying its all active check on the website and my account has been active.
Problem is that i plug my phone in and its dead no sound nothing same for modem as well.
I think it is the connection from the box on the side of the house to the plug in the wall
does spin have to oder a guy to come fix this or do i have to ring telstra ?

thanks

On the Broadband Choice page for Spin ADSL2+ it says:

"Data from peered sources does not count towards plan usage"

Can a Spin rep confirm this is correct for ADSL2+ services, or is this an oversight that has been carried across from the ADSL1 page?

If true, I think Spin must be the first ISP to offer free PIPE on ADSL2+.

ADSL2+ ports have recently run out there as mentioned - the lastest update only has it planned for upgrade but no date yet

We should be able provide regular adsl there with 1500k or 8000k - not adsl2+ but a big step up from dial up

I'm currently with WildIT, and trying t get out of my ADSL contract with them at the moment.

Couple questions, .. I want to goto ADSL2+ with phone bundle, .. with that I cant churn can I? I have to cancel my existing service and then apply with Spin? .. Whats the approx downtime/turnaround?

Cheers

I would not cancel anything at this point until someone can advise if you can churn from standard ADSL to ADSL2+.

Your safest bet would be to either get Spin to Check availability of ports at the exchange you are connected to prior to cancelling your service with Wild, the other alternative might be however to just select an ADSL1 Bundle with Spin , as that will be a straight churn of both your phone and DSL with no real downtime, you could then upgrade to an ADSL2 plan later down the track once you have confirmation of the availability of ports at your exchange. Just make sure you get your wholesale account number for your phone service if you are with Wild for your Phone as well, as the Spin guys will need this to bring your phone across.

Cheers guys, ... from what i can tell there are ADSL2+ ports on my exchange available.

Do spin do a contract free ADSL1? .. maybe churn over then goto ADSL2+ after a month or so? .... just awaiting TIO ruling to see if I can get away from this WildIT Mess

Yes they do, as opposed to ALL ADSL2+ plans being a 12 or 24 month contract.

You can churn to ADSL 1 for free depending on your chosen contract period. However, if you then try to move to ADSL 2 with them, you may still be subject to connection charges etc depending on what deal Comcen have at the time. Somebody else asked the same question a few days ago, and one of the Reps basically said it's probably better to hold off until you want to move over to ADSL 2. Unless you're really desperate to leave WILD..But there would be no advantage froming from Comcen DSL 1 to Comcen DSL 2.

Wouldn't 8MB ADSL be far greater value than a wireless product?

You bet from a speed & download point of view but until I find a good place to live I am more than happy with the iburst - its a good connection & fast enough for surfing & emails & uploading new webpages.

I got off the train from sydney two weeks ago & had a connection as soon as I unpacked at the hotel.

I am asking because this suburb has been set up but run out of ports - there are a couple of exchanges where others have grabbed it all.

I am currently with Iprimus and my plan expires in June. I am interested in the Spin phone bundle plan. Can you please check if I can get ADSL2? exchange is Eight Mile Plains.

Also, will you be introducing any phone capped plans in future? this is the only thing lacking as Iprimus has it and it works well. It's just that their 40G plan is a bit pricey.

Although that does not suit my needs, that would not be a bad "addition" to their product offering. Optus have a good one with their $49 including rental now.

I'm curious as to why you charge a monthly fee for a static IP address. I would certainly understand a one-off administrative fee for setting up the mapping, but does a static allocation really cost you money on an ongoing basis?

We currently offer caps as low as $1.98 on a 2 hour STD call. Not bad I think.

If you mean a pay one monthly price and get lots calls? We are thinking about it. We only got into phones recently...baby steps...8-)

Honestly, your IP wouldn't change that much. If someone wants it locked because of a business reason than they'll pay for that. I believe our rates are pretty good so all in all it equals out.

Many ISP's charge money for such facilities now. It does cost them money (which is why Westnet started charging for it). At the end of the day, most people do not need it so its silly to offer it for free. Most ISP's who offer it free are charging more for their service, so you're paying for it anyway.

OK, yeah, that's the obvious answer. The answer I was looking for, though, has to do with how you are able to stay competitive while doing so. Why can't a competitor offer the same service as you, but with no monthly fee for a static IP address, and lure away your business customers? In other words, what is the cause of the apparently unavoidable cost of statically allocating IP addresses, which needs to be passed on to customers in one way or another?

Honestly, your IP wouldn't change that much.

That's exactly why it doesn't seem like it should be costly to make the allocation completely static. My computer sends and receives some amount of data practically 24/7, so no one else can use my IP address anyway.

I am in no way disputing that there is a real cost, I'd just like to understand where it comes from.

Well, they probably could. But would the majority of mums and dads and general users percieve that as a value added to their extended product? I doubt it.. Why chuck something in for free when it won't inspire majority of their target market to consume their service anyway.

I think it all comes down to capitilism. If people will pay it, why would you not charge for it? "Business" in its true context exists for profits. They do not provide quality service, value added features so they can sleep well at night. Its to create customer loyalty so you will stay with them and give them your money, nothing else!

They do it with smoke & mirrors - offer everyone a free Static IP which most of them don't need & bump the cost of the static IP into the monthly fee.

Spin try to be up front with the costs. This is this much that is taht much. A static IP which few people really have need for is this much.

Whenever an internet company offers a "free" service check out the other costs - you are paying for it somewhere.

I just joined Spin last month. When I log on "my account" at spin website, I can have a look on my daily internet usage for the total usage as well as its daily breakdown. However, for telephone service, there is no facilities to view my daily phone usage (e.g when and how many times i make a phone call). Is it possible to get this data of of my telephone service?

Hey Spin,

I applied just before your 6 month free offer ran out. I got an email today stating my ADSL2 application was rejected that my phone line wasn't compatible.

Why???

I'm on Optus Cable at the moment although I actually applied for a bundle with telephone and as part of the my home service was supposed to be ported across to you. I have both telstra (copper) and Optus (Cable) connected to my house although the copper service is just not active due to going to cable some years ago.

Doesn't seem right? Seems like you tried to activate ADSL2 on my line before getting my line reactivated and ported across.

What the.............

So you applied for it on the copper pair? is this copper all the way to the exchange?
or do you have more than 1 line there.

I used to have an active Telstra line when I brought my house. I then ported over to Optus some time later.

All infrastructure is still available and connected to my house.

this may be why you were rejected. you need to have a copper pair to have both phone and adsl2. if you only have a single copper then you can only have just phone(adls1 will work with this) or just just adsl2 or you would need to have another copper line installed. i seem to remember one of the reps saying an application would be rejected rather than putting in an order for a second copper to be installed and you being hit with an unsuspected big bill.

I have both telstra (copper) and Optus (Cable) connected to my house

the optus cable is totally irrelevant to adsl2. its your copper lines that matter.

i suggest calling Spin and asking them directly what the issue is so you will know what the problem was and what options you have.

You only need the other copper line when you are not bundling.

I'm getting terrible speeds ( <dial-up) on ADSL2+. All my modem settings are the way that spin told me and the speeds my modem tells me I'm on aren't too shabby either:
Upload: 585 Kbps.
Download: 7895 Kbps.
The only errors I'm getting are VoIP related.
