I have noticed, on a weekly basis, even though I can connect to the internet;

when using email/usage meter/OptusZoo WebMail, these services wont work.

I found rebooting the SB5101, then in turn rebooting the Netgear RP614v3, then re-activating the LAN connection on my PC will enable those services again. In my view, the Netgear obtains it's IP address via the SB5101, but anything connected to the RP614v3 that's dynamicly assigned, only talks to the router, not the SB5101. I don't understand why I need to always reboot both items.

Somehow, when personal login details are required, they aren't being received.

Does anyone have the same problem with this combo of hardware, or with any combo, but same fault?

I will be upgrading to a router with QoS down the track for VOIP, and hopefully I won't be experiencing the same fault at that time with the new router.

PS: As you can see, I'm a newbie, so play nice

Cheers
Michael

Yeh I've had the same problem as you. The only way i could get everything working was by rebooting the router. I've had 2 expand my network at home because I didn't have enough ports and i bought another router and connected it 2 the Netgear. I have 2 routers now working and now everything seems 2 b ok. I dunno what the problem is but everything works now.

Yeah, I reckon it's the Netgear RP614 router too!

When I purchased the unit, it was defaulted to chinese language, and would not stop displaying the wizard screen, even after obtaining an updated firmware from Netgear.

I ended up speaking with Netgear tech support, he emailled me another firmware variant (not available from their site) that makes the router hide the wizard page. Once I was past that, the router could establish 'who' I was connected with , and setup what was required.

I had in mind the D-Link DFL-4100 Gaming router (non-wifi), as I can setup the QoS for my VOIP phone, so if any one else has used that bit of kit, and recommend it, I'd appreciate the feedback.

Anyway, in the mean time, I'll get back to my routine power cycling...... <sigh>

:)

I was going to buy a rp614 but was told to buy a rp624 as if you have a 614 it drops out/doesnt work properly with optus cable.

They said something about it not being able to handle more than 1 request at a time.

The 624 def works properly with optus cable though.

have you done a firmware update, I have the exact same setup, have no problems with it at all, I did have to talk to netgear to set it all up though, as I also have my xbox 360 connected and having dynamic IP makes it a hassle. seriously, talk to netgear, they can sort you out, I've never had a problem since I rang them, But definatly try the firmware update at first, then ring them, it's because Optus have a dynamic IP.

Hokay. I just got my uncle's rp614v3 playing nicely with optus cable. The trick is the MAC address. As you may (or may not) know, Optus authenticates your user account by the MAC address of the motorola modem.

To find this MAC address, connect the computer directly to the modem and go to 192.168.100.1 (the modem's config IP). Somewhere in there you'll find 2 MAC addresses, a learned and a self MAC address. I used the learned MAC address (not sure if the other one will work, didn't test it).

Once you have that MAC address (put it in notepad or something), connect the modem to the WAN port of the router and connect all your other devices to the router as you would to share the internet connection. Go to the config IP of your ROUTER (default 192.168.0.1, user: admin, password: password, written on the label on the bottom of the modem) and on the setup page that comes up (not sure which one, doing it from memory now) right down the bottom there should be options to play with MAC addresses. Use a manual one and put in the learned MAC address that you copied from the modem.

Worked for me, let me know how you go.

Thanks for the replies so far.

I think I have solved the problem.

I turned OFF DHCP in the Surfboard 5101 Cable Modem, and changed the LAN IP configuration to suit.
So, all devices connected to the LAN, have an IP range of 192.168.100.xxx, whereas before;
192.168.100.1 with DHCP ON was the SB5101,
and the Netgear RP614v3 LAN was 192.168.0.x with DHCP ON

Since I changed the SB5101, I have NOT had the need to reboot ANY device!!

Thanks!!!!

I have a RP614v3 and SB5101 with optus cable and running Windows 2000.
Only been connected for a couple of months.
But haven't had any problems with the setup or logging on to OptusZoo.
Only thing is OptusZoo does ask me to sign in again, when I move between different tasks (say email to usage meter). I thought that was just normal?

Anyway I didn't make any complex adjustments to the settings (I wouldn't know how).
On my router basic settings page, I have:
Router MAC Address: Use Default MAC Address

It all just worked.
Was I just lucky?

By the way, how do you turn OFF DHCP in the Surfboard 5101 Cable Modem?

You need to log into the SB5101 (192.168.100.1)

From what I remember, either scroll down, or select the sub page that has the DHCP setting - by default, this will be ENABLED

Simply, remove the X or tick, SAVE the settings, and DHCP is removed.

Essentially, if you have the SB5101 connected to your PC, then that will be fine, just ensure you manually assign the same IP range to your LAN card
(192.168.100.2) - xxx.xxx.xxx.1 is already taken by the modem.

I then changed the IP LAN range in my Netgear RP614v3 to start from 192.168.100.2 instead of the usual 192.168.0.2.

I beleive both items didn't fully "talk" to each other, which is why I decided to switch over to a manually assigned network. You can still have the Netgear auto assign IP's and connect devices that are auto discovered (ENGIN Voicebox, etc...)

My Netgear RP614v3 has 'default MAC" enabled also. I found either entering in the SB5101's MAC manually or default still had the same effect, as per my original post

Hope this sorta helps

Thanks, that is very helpful.

I knew how to logon to my router (192.168.0.1) and SPA2000 ATA (192.168.0.2), to configure them.

But never knew the address to access the SB5101. I even looked through the user manual to find out how. But it didn't seem to mention it.

I won't alter anything (on SB5101 setup) at the moment though, because it all seems to be working OK.

Anyway, thanks again.
