Anyone else experiencing that when they try and copy files to and/or from another (non-Vista) PC on the network it is insanely slow or maybe just stalls entirely at the "Calculating..." stage?

If you have had this, did you manage to fix it and if so, how? I'm going batty here over this...

I had the same issue

Came across this under the control Panel

Go to the Control Panel
Open Programs and Features
Click on " Turn windows features on or off" on the left side of the panel
Uncheck "Remote Differential Compression"

Fixed up the problem for me

I disabled that service (thank you) and that has stopped it stalling entirely on the "calculating..." screen but it is still remarkably slow transferring to or from Vista from within Vista.

I go onto the other PCs (XP and W2k3 boxes) and push or pull the files from them and it is normal full speed so it isn't network conditions.

Another thing for SP1 I guess? :D

Well atleast you guys are using Vista, I have decided not to supply to my customers yet due to bugs... as always with windows.

How is the rest of Vista running, good/bad?

Does it accept most drivers?

This hasn't worked for me. I thought it did at first, but nope, still spends half the time calculating.

Amazingly for a product that was in development from a stable base for 3 years it definitely feels like "needs more cowbell/service pack".

I like it. I now find XP naff to use after Vista, but it has some moments that cause a scrunched up face of annoyance, mostly drivers.

Creative and Nvidia in particular should be taken out back and shot for the poor job they've done.

Works fine here on 4 different Vista computers all with 2 Gig of ram each. Copying a 7.5 gig iso file takes 2 minutes 15 seconds (gigabit network).

You probably need more ram.

I also read somewhere where a single 1 gig ram stick has a problem where 2 512 ram sticks do not.

Check for a bios upgrades where is states better ram support.
Not all computers are Vista compatible.

I think you are talking about Vista to Vista copy, am I correct?

But they are talking about Vista to non-Vista copy.

Great, thanks for that bit of help guys... I personally did not test it just for those reasons and if Nvidia isn't running smoothly with Vista what is the point.... Considering most things I sell come with Nvidia cards.

I don't want clients ringing up saying Vista isn't working here and there etc etc when I can't fix the problem because stupid Microsoft releases products before they have really tested it.

SLI is a train wreck. My 7950GX2 is working as a single 7900GT (I believe it is?) just now.

Creative X-Fi... absolute disaster. 5.1... what 5.1? None of the tools that come with it are compatible with the vista version of the drivers. Just... blah.

It's really pathetic. It's not as if no one knew Vista was coming.

In the penalty box

Vista has only been on the consumer market for one month. I'm planning on waiting till about June/July to install Vista. I'll be on Uni break thus having time to sort through all the issues, if any.

It was the same for XP - I waited about five to six months before upgrading from Windows 98.

There is a new Vista Logitech setpoint prgram on the logitech site for both Vista 86 and X64.

From memory you have to uninstall and install the 2.22 restart and then install the 3.10 setpoint.

It worked fine here for a Blue tooth keyboard and mouse and a gaming mouse.

I found 3 different solutions. Maybe one of them will work for you. These are copied and pasted from another forum and have worked for others.

1. If you have upgraded from XP take "ownership" of ALL of the files on ALL of your hardrives, they will copy/move/delete just as fast if not FASTER then on XP.

If you don't take ownership, Vistas got to check each and every file your trying to work with to see if you have the proper permissions to do so.

I was a little bugged by the slow copy/move delete, but was pleasantly surprised how zippy it was once I took ownership.

Files that are on your computer from when you ran XP have a different
"owner".

2. Try turning off the auto-tuning for the TCP/IP receive window. Use the following command.

netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled

and to re-enable it

netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=normal

In some cases you may need to use this command in combination with the above

netsh interface tcp set global rss=disabled

If turning off the auto-tuning works then something on your network doesn't
support this feature which is too bad because it can really speed up things
over time.

3. Microsoft support article 'The copy process may stop responding when you try to copy files from a server on a network to a Windows Vista-based computer'.

support.microsoft.com/de.../kb/931770/en-us

You will have to call Microsoft to get the files

Cheers

I have tried ALL of the solutions in this thread with no success (including the KB update).

I can't copy a file from XP to Vista over about 100k. I can't even open most shared folders. It crashes and gives bogus error messages about the file isn't found or the permissions wrong (even though they were obviously fine a second ago on a different file).

XP to XP is of course no problem.

Any more ideas? Extremely frustrating. Months since release and Vista still can't do the absolute basics.

I'm having the same problems, I was getting around 2-3MBs across a wireless network (one end of the house to the other) using Windows XP, this has dropped to 100-200kbs using vista ultimate x64.

I have also tried all the solutions I could find on the net; there are at least a dozen.

I think I have found a novel approach however by using a VM method.

1. Download and install Virtual PC 2007 from the microsoft site.

2. Install good old XP as a virtual machine and map your Vista drives into the virtual machine.

3. Copy from the mapped drives within the virtual machine to wherever you wish at the close to, if not, original XP speeds.

Kills two birds with one stone, allowing you to have XP functionallity and the flashy vista functionallity all at once.

I thought originally that it was a hardware problem, but this just proves it is a Vista problem.

Have there been any upgrades (a patch or quick fix) to make Vista<->XP file copying any faster? I used to be able to get 7-8MB/s transfer with XP, now i can only get 3-4MB/s.

I am running Vista Ultimate, December 2007 updates.

I have a home network. Vista 32 ultimate and just installed vista 64 on a new machine.

I have never transferred files between the computers much before but have needed to transfer about 500gb with the new computer (vista 64).

However the transfer rate is under 10MB/sec which is actually pretty bloody slow.

The network goes through a router and is all cat5.

The network adapters are on the motherboards - both gigabyte GA-P35-DS3P.

Any idea why so slow?

I ahve done the

From wathching a lot of transfers there seems to be a limit of 10MB/sec.

Is there any reason for this and how can I change it to 100MB/sec

I'm new here, please be nice

ok, if looked for a solution everywhere and all of them suck and wont give you much of an improvement, so here's my solution:

go to nvidia's website and download the latest nforce drivers, then go to control panel and uninstall the "nvidia network access manager" then when your asked ro reboot say no. then unistall all the nvidia drivers, including the display driver (thats just to make sure you uninstall all the nforce drivers, hope you have display drivers on your HDD or download the newest). ok then reboot when asked, but before your pc boots up go into the bios by pressing the del key, only if you have 2 network ports and disable the 2nd one there, just look around, you will find it. now save and exit the bios and when windows boots up and ready install the new drivers BUT WHEN INSTALLING THE NFORCE DRIVERS SAY NO WHEN ASKED IF YOU WANT TO INSTALL NETWORK ACCESS MANAGER.....NETWORK ACCESS MANAGER IS BAD!!!!! NO NAM!!!! K?????. great, restart the machine after everything is installed and when windows boots up again, go to control panel-windows firewall-(on the right pane) Allow a program through windows firewall(even if your not using it or have another installed you must do this step)-then click on advanced on the top right hand tab-then uncheck the box next to the network adapter your using, click apply and close. ok your LAN transfer speeds shoud increase alot now. but if your using bitdefender like im, youl have to do some changes in the frewall settings there, im using 2009 and cant remember if you have to do this in 2008. switch to advance view and on the right choose firewall, now click on network(the adapter name shoud show there if your connected to a network), make sure the trust level is trust all or trust local or something like that, generic is on and stealth is off. close bitdefender and restart your PC. JUST REMEMBER NO NETWORK ACCESS MANAGER AND IF YOU DONT SWITCH OF THE STEALTH ON THE ADAPTER CONNECTED TO A NETWORK THAT YOU WONT BE ABLE TO SHARE ANYTHING......

after i did what i just said my transfer rates went from 200kb's to over 50-70mb/s. for a small improvement on speed's you can just disable flow control on your adapter but if your lucky you will get speeds of around 5-10mb/s.

hope this helped!!!!
