i've been looking through the hundreds of 22" LCD threads, and narrowed my choices down to the Dell E228WFP or Samsung 225BW. however, some others on the forums told me that the Samsung 226BW is coming soon.

well i've found an australian website that lists the australian RRP of the 226BW as $899, and the australian release as March 1st.
www.smarthouse.com.au/Co...Screens/U3L6V7G5

that's a fair bit more than i expected. might just stick to the 225BW - i hope they haven't stopped making them!

IMHO, don't go for that monitor. Might as well purchase a 24" widescreen with a little bit more. How much does the Dell E228WFP cost?

the dell is $599.

22" seems to be the sweetspot, i think i'll stick to this size. 24" are out of my league ($1000+).

i suppose i'll see if i can get one of these samsungs, or settle for the dell.

As far as i know, it has no height adjustment but has 2ms instead of most current 22" which have 5ms.

It's pricey at $899 rrp though.

which is why I'd rather go for a 24" WS if you had the money. Since this is not the OP's case, I'd go for the Samsung than the Dell. Or, maybe take a look at the Acer, BenQ and Chi Mei models?

The 225BW has an RRP of $799
It's just the RRP people! Street price won't be anywhere near $899. You obviously will be hit with the early adopters fee (Eg, not a huge amount below RRP), but after a month it should come down a lot more.
No one ever pays anywhere near RRP for computer/electronics (unless it's Apple stuff).

Staticice tells me the cheapest 225BW is $515... Not bad for an RRP of $799

street price means nothing...

who is gonna actually buy it on a street...:P

if it is really $800 for the 226BW...you could get 2xChimei 22Inch LCD's for that price...

not much of a bargain there

The only thing that i still cant understand is that why a height adjustable is not standard on all lcds.

couple of things to say:
1) i'm not really concerned with it being a TN panel. personally, researching this purchase was the first time i found out about the different panel types, and about stuff like backlight bleeding and dot pitch. monitors like the 225BW were being hammered on the forums for being TN, and for having backlight bleeding and larger dot pitch. i then looked at my own 19" LG LCD, and found that it is a SIX-bit TN panel, found it has pretty significant backlight bleeding, and an even LARGER dot pitch than the 22" LCDs - and i haven't noticed a single issue whatsoever in 3 years of use.

so i think it's important to keep a bit of perspective - these TN panels may not impress graphic designers and people who are after perfect colour, but for the normal consumer, i think they are great value.

2) this site *seems* to compare the specifications (it's a chinese site, difficult to interpret):
bbs.pcpop.com/5000034/16...0123/784463.html
this site directly compares the TN panels, i think. it seems the 226BW has more "colour saturation %" but i have no idea what that means.

this site is good:
www.google.com/translate...en&hl=en&ie=UTF8
reviews the 226BW. pictures of games and things.

this site is very good:
64.233.179.104/translate...hl%3Den%26sa%3DN
it's a detailed review of 11 of the major 22" LCDs including the 225BW AND 226BW. overall, it finds the 226BW the winner.

so it seems the 226BW is consistently better than the 225BW in terms of fixing issues like the backlight bleeding, and a more vibrant screen. looks pretty good.

3) one more note, someone above mentioned it, the 226BW has no height adjustment, the 225BW does. personally it's not a consideration as i'll be wall-mounting my LCD, but it might be important for other people.

so i guess we just have to wait. i'm in no particular rush, hopefully be about march/april the 225BW and 226BW will actually be available. i'd say the 226BW price will indeed come down or i can't see them selling very many given the competition at this screen size. i've read on american forums about people getting the 226BW for the same price as the 225BW - circuit city in the states is selling the 226BW for USB$380, which directly converts to AUD$500 so with taxes and australian over-pricing and stuff probably $600-650. which isn't too bad at all, but we'll probably have to wait till april/june or so for prices like that.

i guess we'll just have to wait and see.

It appears the new 24" monitors will be coming down in price a lot in the next few months. Currently there is a massive price gap between 22" and 24" monitors ie. the 24" ones are costing about TWICE the price of 22".
With the new releases like Samsung 245t they will be shrinking the gap.

I would love to buy a 24" monitor. However, yesterday I saw a few monitors at local JB Hifi and it seems the 22" would fit any desk better. A 24" looked so big that you have to sit quite far from your desk!

I think 226bw is the monitor i will be buying. unless of course the 245t becomes really affordable!

is the 245t a standard LCD (i.e. 5:4)?

i'm going for a widescreen one. i saw a friend's widescreen 22" LCD and played some games on it, and was absolutely hooked. you're right about the prices though, the 22" LCDs are about $400-600 and then the 24" LCDs jump to like $1000+.

here's hoping the 226BW will be in the usual price range.

The 245t is widescreen. 16:10 in fact.
Everything 24" and above is widescreen to my knowledge.
The 245t replaces 244t. It has a lot better features and performance, and a much cheaper price than 244t was !

yeah i just had a look. in the recent announcements, 226BW was announced for immediate release, 245T was just announced as existing and set for a future release.

so:
1) the 226BW has USD RRP of $430. we've been seeing the 226BW at US stores at USD$380 (12% decrease). coverted to australian with some extra for tax/shipping, that's about AUD$600. however, i saw a website (above) that lists the australian RRP at $900. nonetheless, the 225BW had an australian RRP of $799, and has been seen for as low as $515 recently. so we'll just have to wait until March 1st to see what happens.

2) the 245T has USD RRP of $800. so applying similar logic, the 245T could be seen in US stores with a price of around USD$700 (~12% mark down). converted to australian with additions gives about AUD$1050.

assuming it's not marked up for australia, 245T sounds like excellent value, but way out of my league for price unfortunately.

but 226BW seems to be the best performing 22" LCD so far from all the above reviews, so if it's reasonably priced when it's out (or perhaps a month or so afterward), then i'll pick one up.

Some people have been saying that the 24" monitors are running at full 1920 x 1200 which achieves a full 1080p specification.

They are suggesting that the 22" monitors arent enough for 1080i. Is this true?
I mean, i have been able to play 1080i clips on my 17" CRT monitor on a P4 2.4ghz thats 4 years old.

I am trying to find out what they mean by suggesting that you need a 24" monitors for 1080p.

you can play any file on any monitor, the monitor will just downscale the picture if it's too big.

to have the best experience of HD (1920 lines wide by 1080 lines high) where there is no downscaling, you need a monitor at least 1920 lines wide and 1080 high. the resolution of 1920x1200 fits this fine, with some extra height to spare.

however, 22" LCDs only have 1680x1050 resolution. this isn't high/wide enough to display HD content without being downscaled.

basically a 24" will look better with HD content than a 22". but there is a very, very big price difference.

yeah the 'vista ready' thing means nothing really, just microsoft getting some more exposure (do they really need it??).

and yeah you really shouldn't be too concerned if you've bought a 225BW with the 226BW coming out soon... the original model is a great monitor and the new one hasn't changed much from the old formula, just tweaked a few things here and there.

both are good purchases.

hey mate. thanks again for the help before.

i think i'll wait until the 226BWs are actually in stores (and the 225BWs as well actually, stock on those seems to be delayed), and i'll see what prices the 226BW comes to in the month or so after that. my new system is no hurry, i'm planning to get it april/june sometime so hopefully by then the 226BW will be of a reasonable price (as well as the CPU/GPU etc. being a bit cheaper!).

but it seems like the 226BW is a tweaked version of the 225BW, a few things changed here and there. both seem like excellent purchases, but from the reviews the 226BW seems to be a touch better in terms of some of the flaws of the 225BW (backlight bleeding etc.).

so bottom line, if i can get the 226BW at a reasonable price (nothing over $650 i'd say), then i'll go that way. otherwise i'll stick to the 225BW. either way, i think i'll be pretty happy.

Just a heads up...apparently samsung has started to change the 226bw's samsung panel to a AOC panel.......post #18 www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1157788

Anyone know anything about AOC panels?

This is an AU Optronics panel, not "AOC". Look here;-
www.auo.com/auoDEV/produ...2&items_id=1That

That doesn't sound too worrying to me, AU Optronics make some very good panels, I'm sure they're better than Chi Mei at least.

EDIT: Samsung has two 22" panels listed:-
www.samsung.com/Products...0M1/LTM220M1.htm
www.samsung.com/Products...0M2/LTM220M2.htm
Both seem to be the same so I wouldn't worry about the two though.

Anyway, I think the AU Optronics and Samsung 22" panels both are looking to be quite good.

oh right, thanks for all that! had no idea about it.

i don't think samsung would change to a significantly inferior panel after the excellent reviews the 226BW is getting, they'd want to keep that quality up or people would notice. i'd say any replacement panel would be of a similar high quality to the samsung panel.

still waiting for march for the 226BW release!

www.samsung.com/au/produ...onitor/206bw.asp says the price of the 206BW is $699.

So instead of the prices being $300 apart, they're now only $100.

Great Picture.Backlight bleed is very slim on the bottom!will get a better idea tonight when its dark.I also own the LG-L226wt and have set up both with same settings. So far in comparing them i see very little difference in picture quality. The backlight bleed is more noticeable with the LG with some top and bottom bleeding.I will be taking some side by side pics of both monitors soon (Hopefully this weekend and ill post them here

One thing I found very dodgy about samsung is their warranty. It's listed as on-site everywhere except the fine print. (major cities only) I used their look up and couldn't even find something for sydney, let alone Orange.

So I'd stay away from Samsung unless you (most likely) in a major city. hmm, wonder if hobart and darwin ar major cities?

AU Optronics A panel and Samsung S panel. From what i have heard! The s panel was only made at first until AUO gets in full production of the A Panel. Both panels are suppossed to be the same, but several have said that the A panel isnt as good as the S panel. You can tell which panel your buying by looking for an s or a on the model No label on the back of the monitor.

Thank you very much stanleyjohn for information and the photo, but can you make photos more closely of both LG L226WT and Samsung 226BW , with resolution of photos at least 2280*1712, or may be two photos each for one monitor close-up?
Write please, what your impression in various situations such as plays, movies etc. of each monitor.

I will be taking some better pics with close ups soon. The camera i have is a bit out of date and expecting better one soon.I will take pics in highest res that i can.The pic shown was low res!I wasnt sure how high a resolution was allowed on placing pic on http.My first impressions on the 226bw are very positive.I have been playing around with the settings looking for the best picture.Backlight bleed is not to be found in dynamic mode.In other settings it hardly noticeable at all.Im plnning on doing some tests on it and will include pics if i can get pic quality up to par.I will also be doing tests on my LG also.So far they both look alot the same in pic quality but the LG does seem to have alittle more bleed than the sammy.I wouldnt worry about that though!its still alot better than other monitors that i have seen pics of.Im no expert on LCD! before i got these two LCDS i had a mag 19" which was my first lcd monitor,Im still learning.

Smart design: MagicTune™ technology lets you make monitor adjustments via the mouse, so you can enjoy a cleaner, sleeker monitor design with fewer buttons.

Versatile stand: Add flexibility and comfort to your view with this swiveling, tilting stand.

Wall-mountable design: The detachable base and wall mounting capabilities let you free up more desktop space. Whether it’s on your desk or hanging on your wall, this monitor will look great.

you can get the 225BW at around $535 depending where you are located.

the 225BW is STILL a wonderful monitor. I have one myself and the back light bleeding is over exaggerated. You'll hardly notice it and even if you do, it is a very minor problem and will get used to it within the day. $650 for the 226BW is a rip off IMO

Hi All, I think we will find that the 226BW will come in at a better price than $650. I just checked the Harris Technology website to see i they had it listed. Harris have it listed for Price Inc GST $569.00. This is a great price considering Harris usually are not the cheapest when it comes to any product!

Looks like it will be my monitor of choice soon ... : )

Hopefully the 225BW will go down in price as well, making the whole Samsung line even better value.

Wont they start to have runouts on the 225 when the 226 hits the shelf, seeing as the 226 is replacing it.

I'm not sure if the 225BW will be stopped. I think they may kept it, as it has a height adjustable stand and is 5ms; while the 226BW doesn't have any height adjustment, and is 2ms. They "should" keep both going in my opion.

Don't regret your purchase. Years of experience tells me that its just not worth it.

I do, however, have a sneaking suspicion that I will suffer from early adopter syndrome - backlight bleeding, dead pixels etc. We'll see how it all turns out!

I'm not questioning it. HT is a BIG chain and I doubt I'll get burnt from them. Worst case scenario is they jack the price, in which case they let me cancel my order.

No worries.

It all happened by chance. I searched for 226BW on staticice after finding this thread on Friday, and nothing. Searched again this morning after the G/F talked me out of the Dell 24", and there it was. And as much as I'd prefer something bigger, this model seems like it has a perfect price:performance ratio.

glorious news.

I hope so. We'll see if the screens are a good batch or not......

$569 is pretty decent for HT.

I am soooooo tempted to order one right now, considering even the cheapest prices for the old 225BW are about $515. I was expecting $700+ from HT for this model.

That is exactly what I'm going to be running mine from.

It will handle the 2d requirements at native resolution no worries. But no way it will manage native resolution in 3d games.

depends if you want to run it at the native res (1680x1050). If you have a good graphics card then it should be ok. Also, you can adjust it to a fixed aspect ratio e.g 4:3
