Hey guys,
Is there a website or something that allows you to find the name of the person who owns a mobile number? If anyone knows please share :)

Cheers

Phone the number and say "Who am I speaking to?"

No see what I needed it for is that when I got my first phone (on a prepaid account) a few years ago the person at the store must have screwed up my account details because it is not in my name :S. Due to legal reasons they can't tell me what name its under...So yeah I wanted to see who the "actual" owner was.

If you want the details changed you could try calling them up and explaining. If only the name was entered incorrectly you may be able to give them your address/dob and whatever other details they took to confirm it is your account.

there use to be Jason's Grey pages but he received a cease and desist from Telstra. Would be handy if someone else had one

Unfortunately its not just the name....its the whole lot that is in someone elses name.
I don't know how they managed it but they put the number as someone else...
And that greypages only does landlines I think.

I'm guessing if it is your phone, and you are paying, and the Telco screwed up, contact your Telco, and just ask them to fix it - shouldn't be your prob - make them do the running around.
(or have you already tried this, and the telco offered no help?)

All of the above, being irrelevant, as its a prepaid service.

I think the OPs doing a dodgy. Simple as that.

a bit out of date as still showing i have my old number even though someone else has it.

Yes, i agree. It's got my brother still living next door to me even though he moved house 2 years ago.

I know it sounds dodgy and I can't help it if you do think that it is but it is true.
I've already contacted the service provider and they are going to look for the original paperwork and give me a call...so I hope they will.
But I think it is a lost cause if they don't find it and I will have to just use the new number from my new service provider (I was porting out thats when I found out it wasn't in my name). The only other way I could think of is how when you put in your pin wrong a few times it locks it and then when you put in the puk a few times it destroys it...would that make the number available? I don't think it would. I think that it only becomes a new number after six months or a year of inactivity.
It is a shame because that means I have to tell a heck of a lot of people my new number if it doesn't get sorted out

Cheers

The greypages link worked for my house number, have you actually tried it?

Yep tried it but it doesn't really give any info like the name and that...I just wanted to see who it is that is the supposed owner of my number. That way I might be able to get in contact with them and see if they could hand over the ownership so that I could have it legally...

some service providers can search that information themselves, the stores I mean or resellers like Allphones and Telechoice and Network Communications and the rest. What service provider is it with? You would have to provide something that is correct for the story to be validated and for them to be able to legally give you someone elses details. I can see your point but at the same time you need to prove your story somehow, or else I could walk into any store with your phone number and change it to mine and steal your number.....

Yeah I realise this and thats why its a very hard problem to deal with. Since the number is about 2 and a half years old or so I haven't got the original documents which probably would have solved the whole debacle. The only evidence I had was the original prepaid starter kit thing and the original mobile that I bought it with. But legally these aren't good enough. I even asked if they could check how it was paid because it was paid with a mastercard but even that wasn't sufficient...So really now I just have to hope the guy finds the original paperwork otherwise I'll have to let it go...

Not sure why a pre-paid service makes this irrelevant .
The OP still has an arrangement with a service provider, and to my knowledge, the Telco must obtain identification details before connecting a prepaid service - they don't allow "anonymous" mobile accounts.
Is there a reason why the telco would not be able to assist just because it is pre-paid?
Surely the OP doesn't have to go to the TIO?

Wonder why? Perfectly legal.

The way greypages are implemented is a bit dodgy. It's sort of a reverse number lookup and could be dodgy. Apparently there is also some other privacy issue involved the way we can do lookups using those greypages. Lol

For example on white pages residential search you can't just type in the number and find out who it belongs too.

There are two points here.

a) you need identification to BUY a prepaid. A prepaid does not have to be connected at P.O.S. (most arent)

b) you need to SUPPLY identification over the phone or net to connect a prepaid. If you wanted to (and many people do), you could just make the whole lot up.

Correct. However providing False Identification is a crime

I had a friend who was in a similar situation.
He lodged a complaint with the TIO. Basically Optus sent a letter to the name and address on the account. They gave them two weeks to respond. (The account has been opened in 2001, so over 5 years ago). There was no response, we faxed in my friends details and Optus changed the details to my friend. He ported out straight away.

TIO is the only way your going to get anywhere.

Still not sure why you can't contact the Telco, explain the problem, and have them sort it. Pre-paid or post-paid, valid or invalid ID info, there is still a customer & provider relationship.
Or have I missed something?

Thanks for that :) If the service provider don't end up sorting this out I'll do it the TIO way :)
