Ok guys (and gals),

there have been a number of people complaining of slow Torrent speeds. I have my torrents running at a good speed. Currently running 3 torrents at 48+KBs (on a 512plan).

I am going to be online on Sunday, and quite happy to offer help to those that want to get Torrents running smoothly.

What I propose is to use MSN messenger voice chat starting at 3pm AEDT (1pm over here in Perth).

Before we start, please download a copy of
uTorrent
download.utorrent.com/1....-1.6-install.exe
Peer Guardian2
prdownloads.sourceforge....-nt.exe?download
TCP Optimizer
www.speedguide.net/files/TCPOptimizer.exe

also check your MSN messenger is working and you will be able to hear incoming audio.

I will log in on MSN 1/2hr before if anyone needs help with any of the above prerequisites.

ps I will be using IceFragmatic (at) gmail.com as my MSN Messenger account (please remove the spaces and replace (at) with the @ symbol. Don't want a heap of spam)

Please post to this thread if you are intersted in joining in so I get a rough idea of interest.

WildIT do not have anywhere near enough bandwidth to meet the needs of customers. WildIT limit P2P data as much as possible in the hope of maintaining some semblance of acceptable HTTP speed for its customer base.

I'm sure your intentions are genuine, however anyone wanting decent torrent speeds should churn from WildIT to an ISP that can supply them with enough bandwidth to be able to use the internet as intended.

Obviously P2P is working well for you. There are a number of others who also manage to get what they want from P2P. I hope you are able to help others achieve the speeds they want.

They prioritize traffic in much the same way as do many ISP's. I do not necessarily agree with the order it is done. Personally I think game traffic should have a much higher priority than VOIP or MM streams, but that is another story.

I did use Azureus the other day and it seemed to get reasonable speeds. I did not proceed because there were not enough seeds who had the complete file mostly because it was an old torrent.

Very good idea Ice Fragmatic.
There is another member who has offered an I beleive is still helping with BT for wild members.
He helped me get my BT speeds going. I used Azureus B4 the Optus "terrors" and had suffered slow speeds when I was moved over.
You have the right idea!!! GO FOR IT!!!!!
Any one willing to help out is a good thing. Afterall those who have slow unbearable BT speeds have nothing to lose.

PG2 is a program that blocks connections to any Ip adresses in a list. The list is compiled by quite a few online users. This program blocks some "bad" and "undesirable IP address such as schools and BT tracking IPs.

I will explain more during "class"

Yet again I hear people complaining about torrent speed, so yet again I load uTorrent and get 2 files and I'm able to get good speed.

Set your max upload rate to 0. But I agree with David. If you are not prepared to upload you should't be using torrent.
If I was running a tracker and noticed any user doing this they would be kicked.

They can detect that the data is encrypted. They just can't tell what's in it (not in realtime anyway)

Its not hard to distinguish anyways with the amount of open connections to a whole heap of different IPs

And that is how they detect it. Traffic matching patterns, not by peaking inside encrypted channels.

This setting allows you connect with other users that have got encyption enabled and legacy connections disabled. I have found this does improve some torrents with only a few seeds/peers. Every bit helps.

Hi.

Connection: 1536/256.

I can get 150kb/s over HTTP.

I've been using uTorrent since 1.2 and PG2 since my 1st Infringement email.

Prior to this upgrade (what a joke) I was always getting 150-160Kb/s.

Now I get avg 36kb/s; max ever 82kbs (with 20 torrents running).

I've encrypted the protocol since day 2.
I've increase TCPIP.SYS limit to 64.

And followed: www.xtreme-source.com/tu...nt-tweaking.html

All of them made no improvements but I did observe a speed of 82kb/s on them, while before I was getting max 56kb/s, but I haven't tried QUOTE: Also, switching ISP's to one that is known not to mess with BitTorrent traffic can also help tremendously, if it's an option for you.

======Question============

Could somebody who is getting good speeds in Sydney please post their:
DNS settings
BT port used

Also I remember seeing a post about "Traffic Prioritising" but I can't find it. Might have been one of those posts "big sister" deleted from the "play ground" (don't u just love censorship).
Can somebody recap what the priority ports were?

1>80: Internet
2>

What port is used for VOIP?
========================

I've tried running multiple clients. No good.

eDonkey is unusable... for those of you how don't know this; eDonkey prior to 2002 was simply amazing, just like napster but with any file. Then the network started getting bombed. I could still use it prior to the "upgrade" for small files and get excellent speed but now I can't, even with many source and using small files.

Now please folks don't tell me how not to DL to many torrents and stuff like that, I was one napsters first users back in 1998 on a 2MBit line... those were the good times!

I doubt Wild have much equipment and I know they wouldn't know how to setup packeteer, let alone Cisco packet filtering. This is done by the second most useless telecom company Optus.

Wild buy residential plans from them and sell it on... they're middle men (in a nutshell).

Any advice that I haven't detailed and this isn't in the above guide is very much appreciated.

Thanks folks!

At first, What a first post.

About Optus, i don't think wild can't do anything about that. At the end of day, users are suffering.
For wildit, They should introduce more sustainable plan on nextep tail where all users were getting good speed. I think they already have enough publicity and next they don't need to offer unsustainable unlimited.
BTW whirlpool users are banning Bigpond, Optus & Exetel users IP so there will be not much joy using PIPE only users too.

Jaja:

If they could have stayed with NextStep they would have, the problem is that NextStep told Wild to f off.

What's his name had this great idea to not rip his clients off and try and give them some good service by getting them business connections.

So he went to nextstep and said I would like some business bandwidth for my clients... that all went well until nextstep realized they had been done.

So what's his name went looking for a deal and got one with Optus. And here we are now.

If what's his name a thought the plan out better he could have saved his ass from legal stuff by asking people to supply an ABN and not check it's validity... I guess, but then people wouldn't have supplied a cut & paste ABN.

Have you treid using the same torrents at home? Would be interested in speeds. A couple of nights ago I aquired a copy of a recent release of a ummm Linix distro (something Diamond). It downloaded at over 40kbs on my 512 connection (max 50kbs) so I was happey with that.

As far as settings go, everyone is different depending on what your modem can handle, and how many peers/seeds share your torrent. I went through explaining what the settings do so the users can make informed choices when changing them to get better performance.

well, my speed used to be 120kbs+ on public trackers, mostly in asia sites. and now it's only 30-40kbs since i've relocated. i messed with all the possible settings but still really slow...any advice? or it is just wild itself

and i'm on the 1.5mb plan...which i dont think it's worth it that much now

as you can see from an above post one user I helped today was able to download at 145Kbs+ on WildIT.

It will be your settings or the actual torrent.

Bittorrent works only when people upload what they download. many torrents are leeched ie lots of people try downloading and full speed but they do not upload very much. The average users download speed will only be the average users upload speed. If everyone tries to download at 150KBs but only uploads at 3KBs, the torrent will only run at 3KBs. (I am going to start confusing myself soon).

If you are a member of demonoid, try running theis torrent and see what speed you get. I know of 3 users today that got 140+KBs sppeds today (on WildIT).

***link removed - sorry thought this iso was legal***

Thius would indicate that any slow torrent sppeds they get now are caused by poor torrents not WildIT.

I have had 512K connections with 4 different ISP's and I have always had good speeds apart the odd torrents but the popular have always maxed out.

Since joining WildIT 3 months ago i have only had a period of about 3 weeks where torrents have been around 40k-50kbs. Most of the time i struggle to get over 20kbs.

I did an experiment 2 weeks ago where i took my PC to a mates and try to download the same torrents and within 5 minutes i was maxing out at 52kbs on his 512K connection. On WildIT i could only manage 20-25kbs, same software settings, same tracker, same PC so i decided it must be WildIT.

The other thing i have noticed is latency is very slow on www.speedtest.net usually 180-200ms and a one off of 123ms. Friends are consistently around 60-80ms i don't know whether this affects torrents or not.

I am glad you have had success helping people out today

yes, latency is a problem and p2p has been throttled during peak times as stated in posts by Timmy B.

I am trying to indicate that speeds less than 60% of max download spped are not caused by throttling or WildITs network. They are poor settings or more often poor torrents.

Right now I am running 3 downloads and 2 seeds and cruising at 48+Kbs on my 512 connection. No problem here with throttling currently.

The other option is subscribe to a FREE engin VoIP phone.

The free version has no monthly service fees and offers free calls to other engin users of the same same. Call peer to peer to anyone published in the engin 'Public Directory', which you may get by registering at engin.com.au/public/freephone.htm. Effectively, its a private VoIP system with no public in or outbound calls.

If you do not have an ATA to use, download the software off the Wild IT site at at www.wildit.net.au/content/view/126/26 (as these are newer versions).

Its quite handy and a very easy way to setup and trial VoIP with NO obligation for as long as you want. We will be setting up 1 inbound trunk for one of these shortly, that you will be able to use dial into Wild with too.

All the best.

So is this similar to Skype. Free PC to PC calls over your Broadband connection? Does it allow multiple caller to cofrence call? This is why I suggested Skype. But I agree Engin would be better for this since WildIT have a business arrangement with Engin.

Well actually this is a freebie.
As it uses local servers, it would a better performing option.
I don't know about conference call though (that are in the VoIP users guide for the PAYG services - I am not sure if they work - would be worthwhile to try - www.engin.com.au/documen...resuserguide.pdf.

Or we could use the Teamspeak server over at WGN. It would be good to talk to Predom. and see if he can setup a teamspeak server with a screen capture. Then we can do session such as Create a website with Joomla, etc. Be good for the upcoming competion on web usage.

IceFragmatic:

Any chance we can get settings.

DNS 1 IP or Auto
DNS 2 IP or Auto

What settings used in uTorrent?

like: Force Encryption or Enable.
Which port are you using for uTorrent.

I use a private tracker and it won't go above 50kb/s average is around 32kb/s on a 1.5Mb line.

Tried: TCPOptimizer.exe > no change.

The people who are now getting 145kb/s must hae changed something, what did they change?

Thanks.
