hi. i think i've got stupid spyware on my mac. i try to go to a site but it tries to re-direct me to errorsafe.com , and it's one of those really frustrating ones that you can't get out of unless you quit your browser. is there any spyware removal software for the mac?

macrumors.com? Read the page, it is a proof of concept. Thanks!

Which page? Mac Rumors - not possible without interruption.

How can you call it 'proof of concept' when it prevents access to a website?

Isn't this illegal?

I think you'll find it's just that one page. For instance appleinsider's doing it to me at the moment. It's not something on my computer though, it's just javascript in one of the banners on the page doing it.

I clicked cancel, and it still takes me there :-(

Why would this PC crap be on a Mac Website?

I don't get it. Where's this Adware. I want some.
only reference I found to it was here-> www.f-secure.com/weblog/...06.html#00001030

edit: from what I understand, it gets you when you go to the macrumors site. Nothing happened to me though.

It happened to me when I went to the macrumors site. I have now downloaded the latest security update from software update and it no longer happens.

Well it wasn't spyware, adware or anything like that...

It's not happening on the appleinsider.com site any more either.

(I sent them a 'please remove' request. No doubt many others did too)

It was definitely embedded in the page and could be stopped by stopping the page loading once the legit page was on screen.

Cheers

iAdware

We recently received a proof-of-concept sample of an adware program. Normally that wouldn't be worth blogging about, but in this case it's for Mac OS X. In theory, this program could be silently installed to your User account and hooked to each application you use… and it doesn't require Administrator rights to do so. We won't disclose the exact technique used here, it's a feature not a bug, but let's just say that installing a System Library shouldn't be allowed without prompting the user. Especially as it only requires Copy permissions. An Admin could install this globally to all users.

The result: This particular sample successfully launched the Mac's Web browser when we used any of a number of applications.

This is easier to do than with Windows. After all, it's a Mac.

I've been getting those at Imageshack, I wondered what they were :-/ Cancel makes them go to the site anyway... it's irritating.

I'm always cautious when it comes to symantec products. I reckon they cause more problems than they allegedly fix

I agree with you one many of their retail products, but their corporate anti-virus program is excellent

I used to be a fan or Norton stuff way back when, however these days the Symantec software for PC/Mac gets in your way and hogs resources particiularly on Windows. A case of the cure is worse than the disease.
