Does anyone have any good info on software for this phone? I've come from a SE K750i which was rock solid and you could pretty much mod everything on it (thanks FarManager) .. now I have a Nokia again (its been many many many years since my last one) and I can't even find a semi-reasonable piece of software to browse the files on it.

Can you mod the menus and stuff on these bad boys?

I got the theme creation suite .. but it doesn't want to run on my desktop (just starts up and then disappears)

I need to know about any cool little things you can do to it.. I have to tinker with it (and most likely break it knowing me)

Cheers guys!!

I am never good with mods, but software wise you can visit iphone-forum.org for heaps of user made themes and games.

they have some good modding sections there for nokias in general.

whats the easiest way to change the contacts in the phone.. its pulled all my contacts over with separate entries for mobile, work and home

the Nokia software for doing that is retarded

nokia sweet will allow you to copy and paste them, if it is not a recent SE then they are the fault as the software never supported contact transfers.

What network are you on?

If you're on the 3 network, then go Settings > Connectivity > Packet data > Packet data connection, and ensure when needed is selected.

Then, Settings > Connectivity > Packet data > Packet data settings > Active access point and select Mobile internet

Last, Settings > Connectivity > Packet data > Packet data settings > Edit active access point, and ensure Alias for access point is Mobile Internet, and Packet data access point is 3netaccess.

You should be away!

If not, then also check that Settings > Configuration > Preferred access point is Mobile internet too.

I don't hate it, but I do find it more tedious than the SE software on my old phone. More layers to drill down, not quite as obvious where some things are.

Played with my brother-in-law's N73 this afternoon, and it's different again. Nokia seems not to even be consistent across phones. :o(

There are some things the software does that I like. MP3 and AAC format music; better signal strength (now, with a firmware upgrade), POP3 email. But other things are lacking: no push-polling; no details sync across with my appointments now; worse at deciphering HTML email.

Guess if the manufacturers gave us everything we want in a handset, we'd never buy another and they'd go out of business. Bit like the reason why light bulb manufacturers make light bulbs with a filament that will eventually burn out.

But apparently, capitalism is a great thing. Yeah, love planned obsolescence...

VFAU Internet (active access point)

VFAU Internet (alias)

That's because the 6288 is an S40 phone, whereas the N73 is S60 (Symbian)

@kylemcd,

I've tried following the steps you outlined above, but I still cannot connect to the three portal, the phone still says "packet data connection is not available".

and I was wondering do I need to setup the preferred access point first?

or Could anyone pls tell me step by step on how to setup these settings....

thanks

I remember I first stuffed my phone up because I didn't realise it can access Planet 3 one way; mobile internet another. Sorted it, and then never thought of it again, so I can't remember precisely what I did!

Try also Menu > Web > Settings > Configuration settings

Under there, check the following:

Configuration is default

Account is Planet 3

Display terminal window is No

Try giving 3 a call. There will be someone there who can help you. You may not encounter that person straight away, but he or she will be there, surely.

I bought this Nokia 6288 outright from another shop, and because It is unlocked It didnt come with three settings as default, in those sections there are only options for Optus, Vodafone, Vodafone NZ, Telstra and Virgin. I also can't add another settings...any help? or suggestions?

I would suspect that you would be hard pressed getting a better phone for free, or a better value cap plan.

Seems fine to me so far.

Doesn't slide quite as much as the 6280 meaning the top row of keys are closer to the top half of the handset, making them a little more tricky to get to, but with the upgraded firmware, A2DP streaming as standard, and slightly more sexy design, I think it's a good choice on a $29 cap

Yeh when I went into the 3 shop and checked it out, i realised this as well... but unless you have really big fingers... it shouldn't be that much of a problem..

I mean the reason they brought this phone out was probably because the 6280 had lots of problems right... so i mean there not going to bring out another phone if it will be a dud as well... so it should be better... plus it looks ' better'.

I think the solution is to add the settings under Menu > Settings > Configuration > Personal config settings. You can add the 3 portal etc there.

As for the specific settings for the 6288, I don't know. Try searching Aussie3g for "Planet 3 settings" and see if you get anything there.

I got the phone from Allphones in Perth, W.A. on the 3 phone $29 cap plan...amazing value, but they were saying that you can't get a white one yet !!! I want a white one for my partner... very dangerous to get the phone mixup !.

I got a black one and I think the cover can be removed and change with new cover anyway.

so far I am loving it... even go for the $10 TV deal (unlimited viewing to 6 channels), the only disappointing thing is Three only supplied the phone with a 62mb memory stick... I thought it was 512 mb!! vodafone got 512mb and all other reviews... also indicated a 512mb... I know it is only $45 extra, but this would have been nice.

Firstly, I fail to see what changing the covers has to do with a sexual preference.

Secondly, basically the definition is: If it requires a tool to fit the cover, then it isn't covered by warranty if done by anyone other than an Authorised Service Centre.

Ok just tried out a whole heap of diff formats on my 6288 so to answer your question.

XVID - NO

DIVX - NO

MPEG2 - NO

MPEG4 YES (resoutions up to 640x480 seem to work however the screen is only 320x240 so no point in going any higher)

Try this 3GP at 320x240 bit rate 256 for video. Experiment around. Quicktime and Nero Recode both make movies that are playable on the 6288 i used the convert to IPOD settings in Nero.

3GP YES Thats a no brainer it's a format specifically used on mobiles

Also try Xilisoft divx to 3gp converter it can convert to a whole host of formats including 3GP 3GP2 and MPEG4.

Which is exactly what I thought. Although, off topic, I think that the 6280 has been done now.

In my searching for a unlock for the 6288, I believe that I ran across a few places that were able to fix the 6280. Happy to be wrong as it's not the phone that I'm trying to unlock.

guys, i picked one up from 3 the other day!!!
just a couple of concerns,
the top part of the phone, that slides up, seems to be a little loose and pivots around a little. Is this normal, is it meant to be firm with no play. Its a bit annoying when navigating using the front buttons.
Also took some photos with the 2 megapixel camera, quality seems to be pretty poor. Can someone post some samples so i can compare the quality. the LG 1.3megapixel took better photos!!! I have tested the camera in a reasonably lit up room, seems to have several faint blue lines running down throughout the darker parts of the photo. Do i need more lighting ??? doesnt seem to perform like a 2megapixel phone camera!! Also, the clarity/detail is pretty ordinary. My lg u880 with a 1.3megapixel seemed better :(
im hoping i have a dud phone so they can change it. Apart from its stylish looks, the 6288 is a little dissapointing. :(

I agree completely. My SEK750i which also had a 2MP camera took way better photos than this. Although this camera does a good job in well lit outdoor scenes it is very poor indoors and in low light conditions.

faint blue lines running down throughout the darker parts of the photo.
That is my biggest problem with the camera feature as well.

Also have you noticed the lack of an adequate focus with the SEK750i you could hear and feal the lens focusing (very quietly). If you held the photo button down halfway it would focus without taking a photo and be ready for you to click it for a near instant photo.

The camera also doesn't appear to contrast to well. It takes a fair while to go from shooting light to dark either everything is too bright or too dark untill it adjusts which takes too long.

the top part of the phone, that slides up, seems to be a little loose and pivots around a little. Is this normal

Sadly mine is like this too i wasn't too impressed but as this is my first slide phone I couldn't compare it to other sliders.

But the phone does have alot of good features. The multimedia functions are awesome it definately has alot more computing power than my old SEK750i. And the video mode is great i mean 640x480 mp4 on a phone sure it's not perfect but hey this is a phone i am stoked.

Overall i'll be happy if it doesn't break as it does seem a little fragile.

I like the movie camera mode

i like the interface

i like the call quality

i like the features.

I dislike the battery life (charging it every day almost - compared to every 4-5days for my sony)

I dislike the camera (why have a 2MP if it does such a poor job these things are sold as camera phones)

I don't like that the led light cannot be used as a torch.

I don't like the flimsy construction but if it holds together ill be happy.

Overall a good phone but personally wished i went for the SEK800i or similar.

I wonder if they would take it back ????
i have a k800i which im very happy with
camera focuses like you mentioned and is a kick-ass phone. Best phone i've had!!!
LGU880 was my previous phone, I rate it more than the NOKIA 6288!!!
If your thinking of getting a 6288, i'd re-consider. Better 3g camera phones available on the same plans IMO.

I think it is only 64mb... definitely there in the fineprint for 3... the salesguy (from Allphones) actually thought it was 512mb also... so he gave me a discount for 512mb stick.

I had the phone for two week now... and basically agreed with all that been said with the camera (not very good), the battery is not an issue for me (not sure why !) I been watching the live tv and and radio - btw, is not as good reception as my old K750i... also dropped it once !@#% thanks goodness for the hard see-through cover... still in one piece.

one more issue... the bit for the thumb to slide the top is too small ... I keep on turning on the camera by mistake... one extra reason why I got those hard cover.

Just don't be rough with it and don't take it to the beach, i'm still pulling the sand out of it. It's prob more of a chics phone than a guys phone (owing to its flimsy construction). And definately not a good phone for me, i've killed several of my old Nokia builders phones the 5100 or 5200 whatever they where called and my old Sony has more dents in it than a demolition derby car.

There is an ebay seller called Mobilecity which has an actual shop in Parramatta, Sydney..they have pretty good deals on new phones i.e Nokia 6288 for $450 or Nokia N70 for $490 and they are UNLOCKED, and if you actually come to the shop and haggle for a bit, you might be able to get a discount.... :)

Look around but for about $100 more you can start looking at the SEW850i or K800i. The only dislike i have about either is the directional pad.

The K800i uses a joystick similar to the K750i and I had alot of probs with the joystick on the K750i.

The W850i uses a unconventional directional pad. Checkout Cnet.com video review of it. But other than that it looks like a great little slider phone.

Both phones have mostly similar features except the K800i has a 3.2MP cybershot camera. The W850i has a 2MP camera but has a torch (2xLED lights). I found this feature the most usefull on my K750i

The 6288 doesn't have a LED than can be used as a torch, it can only be used for the camera.

I'm not sure at all about modding this phone, having had it 2 days. I like but it lacks one important thing that my LG had....'Secret Memo'. This was where I stored bank details etc and it required your phones security code to access it. There doesn't seem to be any such app. installed on the Nokia 6288.

Does anybody know any links to 6288 installable apps, especially one fitting the specs of the above app. ???

Cheers All

Has anybody had any experience with larger minisd cards in the 6288?

A salesman at 3 said he reckons the phone would be too unstable, prone to crashes, etc with a 2gb memory card. He said the stability would be fine with 1gb but there'd be a bit of a lag. He says he experiences these problems with his N73.

I was talking in another thread with N73 owners who reckon this experience doesn't ring true with them.

I'm about to buy a 6288, just wondering what mem card to get with it (and yes, the bigger the better so I can carry as much music as possible)

Hi,

Has anybody been playing around with the World Clock. I am in Perth and having issues with Daylight Saving. I have 4 cities setup, but when I select Perth as the "phone time zone", the other cities time difference does not include the daylight saving 1 hr. I have changed it to use Tokyo as the phone time zone and now the time difference is correct. 'cept, I am not in Tokyo. The phone’s GMT is set to +8 and the display clock is correct.

Cheers

The Nokia 6288 from 3 is of excellent value. Just got one a few days ago for $0 on the $29 plan. Am quite a big user of the 3 email offering.

I've used the Sony Ericsson z800i (with 3) for over a year now and have always had difficult with its keypad. I find writing an email or an sms quite laborious. On the other hand I’ve always found Nokia keypad very easy to use, which makes sms and composing emails quicker.

Have a question on email “sent items” for those of you who use 3 email quite regularly. On the 6288, is there a way to view sent items list using “recipient” and “subject”? At the moment, the sent emails view is using “sender” and “subject”. This is quite useless as I’m always the sender. The only way I could find out who I sent the email to is by going to Message Details, which is an extra step or two.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Got to agree.
I just came to 3 after 12 years with Optus, and was torn between the Motorola V3 and the Nokia 6288.
Got the Nokia, and had to get onto 3 for roaming function. (Going o/s tonight)
Normally you have to wait 3 account periods for roaming, but as I had been with Optus 12 years and a good record of billing (I assume I do anyway) 3 connected it yesterday. Brilliant service, brilliant phone !

See you when I get back

Hi,

I am already with 3 and am thinking of upgrading my phone to the nokia 6288. Should i just buy the phone from 3 even though it may not be able to be unlocked??? or could i buy the 6288 from vodafone outright and then unlock it and chuck in my 3 sim into it, providing that would even work?

Buying the phone outright from voda is more expensive but i have heard it comes with 512 and it wont be locked?

Does the 6288 from voda have all the "live" menu customizations, coz i used to have a t610 from vodafone and i was never a fan of those red and blue icons that vodafone used to used?

Sorry for asking a lot of questions but i hope someone can help me.

Cheers

If you want the handset and want to use it with 3, your easiest option is to get it on a plan through 3. That's not necessarily the best.

If you buy from Vodafone and unlock it, it will work on 3. However, you will need to setup the 3 services for mobile internet, email, & Planet 3: none of that will be there. Are you confident and comfortable doing that? There are certainly many threads here and Aussie3g on doing that, but your phone will not be setup quite the same way as a 3-branded phone.

How much would a 512 MB card cost you, compared to buying the phone outright elsewhere? Could you get a 6288 from eBay cheaper? (I bought my 6280 this way, so I don't lock myself into another 24 month contract. I'm waiting to see what comes in March when 3's HSPDA rolls out in Melbourne, and then I'll decide if I take another contract or look elsewhere.)

Why do you want your phone unlocked? Do you intend to leave 3, or are you thinking of resale value? If you don't intend leaving 3, I reckon it's not worth it. And if you are thinking of resale value, consider that phones drop in value pretty quickly anyway. They're a little like a car or other consumer item: the utility value lies in the usability of the widget, not the resale (which is going to be low at best).

Yeah after thinking about it i would just buy the phone from 3 and it will cost me nothing on the 29 cap anyway which i am on now. I have no problems staying with 3 for another 2 years since i have already been with them for 2 years now with my sony ericsson k608 and that is still locked and i havent bothered to unlock it - even though its free.

I think i just got caught up with the whole its locked to 3 and everyone asking if it can be unlocked...blah, I have been really happy with 3 and atm see no reason to leave.

Since i have that sorted just a quick question about the overall size and feel of the phone. Comparing to my SE the thickness is an extra 2mm which isnt much but does the phone feel bulky in your pocket, etc....I never get a good sense of those dummy phones at the stores!

Also whats 3 HSPDA that you were saying?

Cheers and thanks for your help!

I carry mine in a belt case, and don't notice it at all. But, it would be just a little too big to stick in a pocket comfortably unless I were to wear quite loose or baggy trousers. Flat-front cotton jeans, or denim jeans, etc won't comfortably house this phone. It doesn't bother me, but others have whinged about the "bulk" of the phone. It certainly doesn't weigh much.

Also whats 3 HSPDA that you were saying?

Stands for High Speed Packet Data Access, which is a fancy way of saying "downloading data". Typically, PDA (as I understand it) is used for downloading all the fancy 3G stuff, like videos, MMS and internet. HSPDA means all this stuff happens faster, and is especially useful if you use a phone as a broadband modem with a computer. I do occasionally use my phone, linked to the computer via bluetooth, as a modem when I'm out and about. So HSPDA is something I'm interested in, but it won't be a must-have. The way people talk about it, the new system will result in higher across-the-network speeds in general, and really really fast speeds for folks with the right handset and subscriptions. Check forum-replies.cfm?t=629734, forum-replies.cfm?t=628623, forum-replies.cfm?t=6275...ies.cfm?t=664828 and forum-replies.cfm?t=660669 for some more information on it.

When in doubt, RTFM. The "G" means you're in a 3G mobile broadband zone. When you aren't, the symbol will be an "E". When it's surrounded by a solid box, it means you can access mobile web services, like internet and Planet 3. When it's hollow, you can only make and receive voice calls.

Just wondering when playing video files if you can fast forward/rewind or is the only think you can do is pause - there is a fast/rewind interval option but it makes no difference. Also is there a firmware update available or do i already have the latest option. Mine is v 05.92

Just picked up my "free upgrade" on 3 to the Nokia 6288

Just trying to charge the damn thing and now I remember what the little irksome thing about Nokias that frustrated me so much, How the @$%#$! can I easily get the back cover off without using a sledgehammer???? :-P

Trying to hold it away from me using both thumbs to slide it upwards, freakin thing won't budge....any of you have any simple tips?

Cheers.

[Edit]
Nevermind, finally got it off, just weak hands I guess, used the top tip of a pen to push against the bottom of the cover, much easier than fingernails or using your thumbs/friction :-)

I bought a 6280, and I also found the back cover extremely tight at first. So much so, that I was terrified of breaking the damn thing the first time. History records I didn't, but it sure felt like it was going to crush it in the process. I think they must just be tight at first.

After doing a bit of RTFM, I'm wondering if there's a way to turn of the "G" symbol that indicates broadband availability. It gets in the way when running apps (well games) - obscuring the minimap is in the top left of the screen.

Have fiddled with all the connection and data settings but to no avail yet. Anyone have any ideas?

Yeah, I thought so. Does anyone know if Three have modded the firmware on these bad boys so that the packet data connection settings are ignored? As you might guess in spite of changing the packet data connection setting to "as needed", the G connection symbol on my spiffy new Three provided handset stays on all the time. Any ideas?

Check my post above at forum-replies.cfm?t=630934#r7. There can be up to 4 settings you have to confirm are set properly. When I got my 6280 (runs the same firmware) I mucked around with the settings and set my data to Planet 3 all the time, not net access. I took a few minutes to figure out why nothing seemed to work, and after a few heart-in-mouth moments (I had just picked it up from getting it flashed, and though "Great...") all was well.

Yeah I picked up on that earlier, but I've found that editing or changing my active access point still doesn't stop me from connecting to Planet3. That seems to suggest that there is indeed a firmware hack to ensure you stay broadband connected on a permanent basis (possibly to do with Hutchinsons revenue streams). Although I have to say I'm still not sure whether the "G" in the corner represents a broadband connection or merely the availability of one. Either way its still bugging me so if anyone has any more ideas on how to eliminate it I'm all ears!

Hi

I'm a Vodafone pre-pay customer and I bought an unlocked Nokia 6288 off ebay.

It seems fine but the only thing I didn't realise is that it is branded to Optus Zoo at the bottom of the screen.

Is there anyway to remove the branding?

It's not a huge deal I guess but I'm just used to the vodafone branding and the function where you can txt them for your pre-pay account balance.

Absolutely you can. But you will need to provide more detail like your mobile phone provider, laptop brand and some config details, and how you propose to connect (bluetooth or cable).

I have a 6280 which connects very happily to my iBook as a broadband modem, on the 3 network. I usually get speeds around 220 - 230kb in metro Melbourne, including on the train.

I just got a 6288 after 3 years with a 6600, so having a bit of trouble getting used to a non S60 phone again.
Am not sure whether this is the right thread to ask a question, but here goes.

When I retrieve emails (I'm on Three) and delete them from the phone, it doesn't seem to delete them from the server. Is this correct? Will be an absolute pain if I have to delete them through Webmail.

Also, can you record your own voice dial tags or are you stuck with the machine made ones?

Thanks, John

I just recently bought Nokia 6288 outright for $400 and it came with a 128MB MiniSD card. I called the store I bought it from and they said it is Nokia's fault for changing the MiniSD from 512MB (as stated by various reviews and the "Benefits Overview" booklet you receive with the phone) to 128MB. Is it supposed to be like this?

Also, the pre-set security code isn't what the manual states it to be? What should I do?

Thanks!
