Hi There,

I installed FrostWire yesterday and I noticed that it looks the same as LimeWire.
What are the differences between them ?
Do they use the same network ?

Thanks

I tried installing Frostwire today and it doesnt connect at all at startup.

Also was interesting that Frostwire opened up ports in my firewall for javaw.exe from Java folder in program files.

Shouldnt it be opening ports in my firewall for the Frostwire.exe app just like Limewire does (Limewire.exe) ?

I tried manually opening ports for Frostwire but still wont connect. Being so similar to Limewire shouldnt it startup the same way?

Whats going on?

Looks like the same question I raised in:
forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-repl ies.cfm?t=618685
yesterday.

The always-helpful Muad'Dib referred me to not one, but two, useless links. I think that guy's "paste" button is stuck.

Anyone have ideas as to why Frostwire won't connect? A number of sites suggest trying to reinstall Java. Anyone have luck with this?

I think Frostwire is just rubbish.

I know Limewire installs perfect and connects without me doing any portfowarding but why doesnt Frostwire? I mean its got the same engine!!

AFAIK both programs were developed by almost exactly the same teams and there is very little difference between them, Frostwire is open source however and free, while Limewire Pro costs.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FrostWire

FrostWire is an open-source peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing program. It uses the Gnutella network and is heavily based on the better-known LimeWire program.

The project was originally started in September 2005 by members of the LimeWire open-source community, after LimeWire's distributor considered placing "blocking" code which it was developing in response to RIAA pressure and the threat of legal action in light of the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in MGM Studios, Inc. v. Grokster, Ltd. When eventually activated, the code could block its users from sharing unlicensed files. FrostWire was first released in October 2005.

FrostWire is based outside the United States, possibly to avoid legal liability. In any case, the FrostWire team has stated that they will never use "blocking" code in the program.

As with Limewire, FrostWire is written in Java, and so is capable of supporting multiple platforms. LimeWire is available in both free and paid versions, with FrostWire released only as a free version. The FrostWire program includes all of the free LimeWire version's functionality, plus a few features of LimeWire Pro's fee based upgrade. FrostWire, like LimeWire, is free of any adware or spyware. FrostWire's interface is nearly identical to that of LimeWire's since it's based on the same code base although the color scheme is slightly different.

Very impressive, but the question still remains.... why does Frostwire refuse to connect but Limewire connects perfectly when installed?

And why does Frostwire open ports in my firewall for a java application instead of the Frostwire application.

eg. Just like Limewire uses its "Limewire.exe" application to open ports in my firewall.

Bump.

Situation still is:
- Neither Limewire nor Frostwire will connect.
- No firewall.
- Ports open and forwarded on router (confirmed by test)
- Reinstalled Java
- Reinstalled LW/FW
- Reset preferences
- Still no good

Ideas?

Thanks for that link camerooney.
As you mention, it seems this is a problem that has started affecting a large number of users in the last few days. The latest working theory is :

"The trend is more with occasional users, suggesting the hostcache is stale. This fits because the same users can say limewire is working fine and lime's current release is more up to date than frost's. If you follow this line of reasoning then the next release of frost will help improve the health of the network by bring fresh addresses with it. "

I just realised I'm using an older version of LW. I'll try the latest and see what happens.

Interesting....

I have been using frostwire for the last few months - no worries
but now for no reason I can't connect to the network - everything besides Frostwire is fine.
I don't have a clue as to way, thought they went bust or something! :-)

I'm using Frostwire 4.10.9 (and Java 1.5.0_08)

Even though I haven't used it for about a month, I fired FW up just to see if it would connect.

No worries - went from Disconnected to Excellent connection in less than a minute.

I've got the same problem with frostwire.. it simply wont connect, but what is weird is when I have an older version of limewire running in which I start a download then pause it close limewire and open frostwire, frostwire will continue to download it even thought it says its not connected and doesn't let me search....weird

Well, I was of the understanding that the RIAA was all over Limewire and that Frostwire was not under their radar.. yet.

About a month ago I had a lot of problems getting either Limewire or Frostwire to work.

I suggest that you go to the "Satellite" forum on this website, go to page #2 and read the posts under "Limewire and Satellite". This might help sove your problems?

I have Frostwire 4.13.5. I tried Limewire once and it did bad things to my computer so I had to do a complete reinstall. Also, I've heard from people that Frostwire uses 100% of your cpu and does other things. I haven't had these problems, so I think Frostwire is better, but really it all comes down to what you are downloading. Zip files, small sized files and stuff like that are suspicious and may contain viruses. I put the junk filter on pretty strict so not much crap is able to get through. I like Frostwire and I'm going to stick with it, since I haven't had any problems with it... SO FAR.

I used to use Limewire Pro Linux, but have used Frostwire Linux for a couple of years now and I've found it very good. Much the same in performance.

So Frostwire is better ?

I am very very new to this, so this might seems basic. Is Limewire full of viruses and false files or is that too simple ?

I don't recommend you use Limewire or Frostwire. Use Cabos, google search and you will see.

I'd say so, it doesn't come with any viruses and dosn't contain adware. You can get viruses by downloading files within it, so stay away from downloading the zip, rar and exe files, and you should be safe.
