Hi

I have an interesting and perplexing issue.

When I am on ebay (au), and I have the Task Manager open so I can see the "performance" the cpu usage goes up to between high 90's and 100%. Sometimes the screen locks up.

Now it only happens on the ebay website, no other webpages are effected.

Just keep surfing the ebay pages and every time I change page ... up goes the cpu usage.

I have Broadband 512/128, 1 gig of ram on a P4 2.4 and no other applications open.

Could others do the same test and see what results they get?

Can anyone offer a reason ....... and better still a ..... remedy type fix it ?

Cheers

Geoff

Maybe the browser has some kind of bug on that specific page. If you are using Internet Explorer (IE) try Firefox (FF). If you are currently using FF and getting that, try it in IE.

Also run a virus scan (Use AVG - Google it) and download Ad Aware and run that.

See how that goes :)

I'd say you some sort of spyware or adware in the background I just test mine in firefox and IE and luck to get over 20% for a second or 3 then back to zero

Well IE might be the problem, some kind of error with a script on the page or something?

Could you install FF and just try the page in it? If you don't like it you can just uninstall it and go back to IE :)

normal. I have 6 at the moment, each instance is running a different task.

It could be a script issue as described above. Have you tried in firefox yet?

Sort the Processes list by CPU % to see what's using it.

That reminds me, this thread probably should be in the Windows forum, not PC Hardware.

I think i know what is happening,

the scvhost.exe that you describe, when I boot up, it automatically takes up 100% of my CPU usage, and so the CPU (AMD Athlon 64 3400+) is constantly throttling.

It is a "Network Service" for me

I end mine, and it seems to stop the problem. It is a systm task, however I have seen no adverse so far.

Hope this helps.

This happens to me too. I think it's because eBay has so much javascript on their pages. e.g. rafb.net/paste/results/ztXuqQ59.html

Ok

Well I did the "ie.inf" fix and nothing changed even after a re boot.

So I did it another way. I downloded the ie.inf file and saved it in a separate folder.

Then went c:\windows\inf file and found the ie.inf file.

Then right clicked file and said "install". It then located the new downloaded file and asked if it wanted to update. I noticed that the file sizes were different about 51kb to 53.6 kb or there abouts, obviously different dates 2002 and 2006.

So I did. Then rebooted.

The first thing I noticed after reboot was that internet was rocket speed, page changes was rocket speed, .... but ebay ... no changes, still uses 100% cpu when you change pages.

So still looking, I am going to investigate Java issues as suggested above.

Still looking, thanks in advance.

Went to

> Download signed Active X controls

> Changed from prompt to enable

ebay goes much faster between page changes, but still uses 100%

.....Changing this Active X control are there any threats or problems???

Thanks in advance.

Hi

Found the answer ..

After many weeks of painful work I have found the answer. It is all about PC’s which have other “Picture Viewers”/ “Paint Programs” installed to the PC’s programs list.

In ebay .jpg files (not jpeg, not jpe) must be associated with “Windows Picture and Fax Viewer”

To reset this, go this way

Start > Settings > Control Panel > Folder Options > File Types. Scroll down to .jpg.

Now ebay uses .jpg files, so check on “Extension” .jpg that if the “Details of .JPG extension is not – “Opens with … Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, then Click ….. CHANGE then find … Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, click APPLY … then … enter OK. Problem solved.

CPU usage can be still slightly high, but web pages open much faster, because your “Picture Viewers are not hogging each and every picture on the ebay page.

Hope this helps.

Hi

Just to let you know that I also performed exactly the same as the post above for .GIF files.

The reason is that some files on ebay are GIF and Google has the same GIF files.

By using the same approach, google bolts onto the screen.

This would be excellent for PC's using dial up, or older PC's with less ram.

I hope this helps.

Cheers.
