Does anyone here have a Nokia 6233?

I would like some of your comments on the phone if possible. =)

Also, few questions for those who know.

1. Can it play 320x240 MPEG4 videos at 30fps fullscreen?
2. Is the video recording always stuck at 15fps even in lower resolution?
3. I read that display timeout is 10seconds. Does this also apply when playing videos?
4. How is the photo quality? Does it do okay even without autofocus?

any infromation would greatly help me decide which phone to buy. thank you!
(I have tried both the K800i and the N73 and both are ok but more interested in 6233)

Okay. I ended up buying this phone yesterday anyways. =)

Now, to answer my own questions. lol.

1. I think it can. I just haven't figured out the perfect encoding settings. It can even play xvid+aac files as long as it's encoded in correct settings. And it can play full screen. Except it has a back and options wrting on the side still while in full screen.

2. Yes. It looks as though it is. There's no setting to change the FPS of the videos at any res. But the 640x480x15 still looks awesome for a camera phone. There are plenty of "ripple-look" when you shake the phone during recording. So needs very steady hands to avoid them.

3. While playing videos, backlight stays on at full brightness which is good.

And some more general comments about the phone.

- It has awesome stereo speakers. I used to use a Motorola E1000 which has one of the best speakers around and this 6233 is as good if not better. It's really loud but never farts.

- The LCD is crisp but it's not the biggest. Wish it was 2.2" at least. Oh well.

- Browsing the "3" websites, it doesn't use the whole screen like the E1000 does. So it feels a bit cramped. (I have the setting set to full screen also) But the browsing and moving around is quite fast luckly. (Much faster than slow E1000)

- MP3 playback is great with various equaliser settings and 2 custom settings also. It has a 5 band equaliser which is quite good.

- The buttons are excellent. Much better than K800i and the N73. All phones should have buttons like this phone. Big and has good feedback.

- Transflash/MicroSD slot is fully hot swappable. You can yank it out and back in anytime while the phone is on.

- You cannot adjust anything to do with the LCD brightness/contrast/backlight timeout etc. This is one bad thing about the phone for sure.

- USB cable doesn't come with the phone. So make sure you have a USB SD card reader for the MicroSD card. (It comes with an SD card adapter)

Overall, a highly recommendable phone.

I chose this over N73 and I don't regret it that much.
(My friend has the N73 and I've used that heaps before deciding on 6233)

Cool, yeah I am still trying to decide wether to go with the N73 or the 6233. I think the N73 maybe to expensive, and I probably won't use all the features, so 6233 for me. Sounds good!

I thought about this also.... both seem good for what they are.
Plus the 6233 is much more affordable, hence my decision!

Here's more info on video playback after spending whole morning with it.

Use SUPER from www.erightsoft.com. It is freeware and is all u need.

6233 cannot play any videos over 15fps smoothly. (Lots of pauses/jumps)
So encode the video using the following settings.

1. 3gp (Sony Ericsson)
2. XVID (there is less blocking than mpeg4)
3. AAC

Video:
320x240
4:3
15fps

Bitrate can be anything you want. (I've tried up to 576 and it still plays fine)
It all depends on how big you want the video file to be. (I like 384kbps)
Eg. For a 1hour video , 384kbps results in around 180-200mb in size.

Audio:
44100Hz
2 Channel (1 is fine also for mono - resulting in half the size audio stream)
64kbps (or whatever you wish also. higher the better but means bigger file)

====

This will get you going with crisp looking videos running quite smoothly.
I've tried 30fps / 25fps but 6233 cannot handle this framerate. (not bitrate)

BUT

N73 can handle the 25fps videos without issues. (I have both N73 and 6233 with me)
Most likely due to a faster cpu or gpu. But it still does drop frames sometimes. =P
N73 is better if you wanna watch videos in trains etc as it has a bigger LCD also.

Anyways. Back to 6233. It can handle massive bitrates. But not high FPS. Doh.
Still great to see that 6233 has much better video recording capability than N73. =)

Oh. and Yeah. 6233 is a better buy for those who don't need a smartphone.

My friend and I do use ALL the features to its fullest and so N73 is good also.

Go with N73 if you want better photos , Symbian OS , better LCD and video playback.
Go with 6233 if you want better video recording , better speakers , better usability.

I went for the 6233 as it does all i need and the silver model just looks awesome. =)

I love my 6233 and it does everything i need, its a phone after all, if the N73 had WiFi i might have got it.

Also are you runing the latest firmware 4.52 as that fixes some bugs, maybe with newer firmwares we will see more video support

I bought a 6233 just a couple of weeks ago and I think it's a great little phone. It's much better than my old S/E POS. For connectivity I bought a $25 bluetooth USB dongle which works great for file transfer. I'm not fussed about video playback so I doubt I'll bother upgrading the 64mb card that was supplied.

My only gripes are that it kept running out of (internal) memory when I tried to run some applications and themes. I had to either delete or move items onto the SD card in order for them to work. My other gripe (and this is a biggie) is that the backlight turns off after just a few seconds. I wish you could adjust it somehow, as so far I haven't found a way.

Also how do you check your firmware and can you download an update if it's not the most recent?

To check firmware version -> Press *#0000# from the main home screen.
(Not sure if it can be updated yourself or not yet though. Haven't checked.)

My other gripe is how the 2 java games which come with the phone is stored on the included 64mb card and it cannot be copied even via Windows explorer. (Some form of copy protection) So when using a bigger card for videos etc, you have to forget about the games.

Also, the backlight does turn off too quick imo also. I really hope the new firmware include such option. Never had my 6233 lock up yet though. Just don't stress the internal memory coz there's not a lot of it. =P

Why do you want to turn off profiles?

Just use General and modify everything the way you want.
Then if you want to enable silent mode, just hold down #
You can switch quickly between General and Silent this way.
While in silent , you can change it to vibrate also. (Which I do)

I don't use any other profiles except General and Silent. =)

Sorry, I meant the theme. I don't like the Optus theme neither the Nokia one.

Also (for the Optus customers) is there a way to get rid of the 'start-up' penguin and the 'Optus Zoo' logo in the bottom right?

Cheers.

The DRM Theme eg telstra takes up all the internal memory, i was able to move the games to the phone and them move them to the new memory card without any trouble.

The main profiles i use are General Slient and Flight i dont think any others are needed

I've bought the Nokia 6234, seems exactly the same as the 3, currently running v 3.70 firmware.

Anyone know if the firmwares for the 6234 and 6233 are interchangeable? Also, anyone got any good links for these phone models themes and games. The 6280 files seem to work fine on these models also.

After toying with my phone for the better part of the afternoon, I finally figured out how to customise the bastard. Mp3 ring tone, photo wallpaper.

It comes it a miniSD caddy so one can use it in a normal card-reader to transport files (if one doesn't own a data cable).

I must say, that I am extremely happy with my purchase.

To anyone thinking of getting this phone and is unsure, don't be. It is by far the best phone that I have owned.

I got a 6233 at the start of this week, and I've just a couple of gripes.

- The MicroSD cover won't close properly when a card is inserted. Without a card the cover is nice and firm, when a card is inserted it just pops open by itself. In just one week I have found twice that my 1GB MicroSD card is completely out of the phone (thankfully just in my pocket) as the cover is useless and the card must have been bumped enough to eject. This also happens with the included 64MB card.

- The music player has really poor ffwd / rewind - approximately 2x speed only. So if you have a 30 minute audio file and need to be half-way through, it'll take many minutes of holding down ffwd to get there.

- The video player has no ffwd / rewind, at all.

- The headphones are pretty crap. The volume on the phone without headphones is awesome, but when on the bus with those headphones, even max volume is not enough for quiet music / recorded voice.

- The menu options seem a little confusing, often I've had to look in the manual to find where a setting would be. But you get used to that.

So overall, much better than my old POS, but a little lacking for what I was after (audio player as well as phone).

Possibly..

I am not sure whether you can save them to the SIM card... Better off saving them on memory card or phone though.. SIM cards can only hold about 15-20 messages.

Maular, I have no idea how the TF card can possibly fall out by itself as it clicks in quite deeply when it is inserted and you actually have to push it in to pop it back out with your fingernails. Make sure the card is put in upside down. (with the contacts facing upwards)

I bought a 3.5mm adapter off ebay and so it should come in shortly.
I reckon it'll be much better with an earphone with high sensitivity. =)

Im thinking of gettin one, but the only thing stopping me is the no video calling option and the back light going out after 10 seconds problems.

The back light could prob be fixed by new firmware so its no big issue, its only the vid calling. Im scared if i get the phone then the 'i' version will come out like 2 months later with video calling in it.

I've got a feeling an 'i' version will be released with a camera on the front for video calling. They released an 'i' version of the 6230 which added a few features or improved on some. But I doubt that will be for a while yet.

Anyway, u can't keep waiting forever..... unless u dont mind the wait!

Does anyone know if Vodafone will release the 6233? I know they offer the 6234 which is essentially the same phone with a different case and their stupid logo printed on the bottom, but I hate the look of that phone. They've gone out of their way to make it look cheap.

I would much prefer the 6233 which comes in two different colours from what I've seen.

One Vodafone outlet said it will not be release (but it would not surprise them if it was realase as they have done similar things in the past) and another dealer said it will be out soon but could not give a date.

The other think that annoys me is that Optus give you the 6233 on a $30 plan for free wereas Vodafone gives it to you for $178 on a $30 plan.

I like vodaphone but they're really testing me now. :(

Does anyone know how to fast forward quickly in mp3 files?

I got the phone to listen to radio podcasts, which are often quite long (1 hour) mp3 files. Now i find the damn phone has a crap house fast forward system.

The built in mp3 player only fast forwards at about triple speed, which means it takes up to 10 minutes of fast forwarding to get the the middle of a 60 minute track.

The built in media player can play mp3's and has a setting to change the "FF/Rew interval", but get this, it has NO FAST FORWARD BUTTON.

Anyone know of a way I can fast forward mp3's at a better speed?
Does the latest firmware fix up the problem with the built in media player not having an FF button ?
Can i get a 3rd party mp3 player that is not as crap ?

Any help much appreciated.

I think the problem i am having is either with the memory card or the slot. Cos it only happens when the memory card is in

Kenny,
I've read your other couple of posts above and my 'new' 6233 does the exact same thing. Mainly happens when scrolling through, then wanting to go back. Took it back to Crazy Johns here in Victoria, where it did the reset/whiteout screen thing for the sales assistant. Sent back to Nokia for investigation and came back faultless!! I thought that it might be a software firm ware prob. Looking at the current version mine is v3.70.
Does anyone know if upgrading to v4.52 would fix this??
Oh, and since I got it back yesterday, it does the whiteout screen/reset trick more frequently!!

Also, I thought that it was initially due to scrolling through the memory card, but I can get mine to reset by trying to change the screen saver. (nil mp3/logo/ringtones etc installed onto phone)

p.s Sorry about the big reponse all (forum virgin)

So its not only my phone that is doing it then blueyboy. My firmware is 4.52. maybe 4.54 will fix it. Ill take it to the care centre first then see what happens because i have a year warrenty and i dont want to wait for optus to send the bloody thing back.
That will be my last option

Also what version was it before you sent it back to nokia, did you get a new phone from them, or did they just upgrade to version 3.52 or something and then it fixed up?

So its all fine now?

Kenny, the version that was on the phone was v3.70
Care centre didn't update the firmware. I didn't get a new phone, even though the fault was experienced within the first couple of days. Had I called them rather than waiting until I made my next trip to town, they may have replaced the phone as it was returned within the first week. Then again, had they issued me a new one, it may have been from the same batch as the original and may be with the same problem. Will be returning it within the week so I guess I will have to wait and see.

Yeah i no, but like on the 6230 when someone was calling you just press the middle button and you answer it with loudspeaker automatically, was much better.

Still im very happy with this phone

Well i gave my phone back today to optus to see if i can get a new one cos its in the 14 day limit. Funny thing is that it hasnt stuffed up in 5 days, but i thought i should still give it in.

Optus said they dont send a new phone in box, they just replace the parts and give the old case. Isnt ELF or whatever it is ment to give a brand new phone? Nokia said you should get a NEW phone, not a parts replace?

You should be getting a new phone, and as I said before its a complete replacement, brand new sealed in the box. Not some refurbished crap!

I'd be ringing the care line again to confirm, but it should be brand new and sealed.

I was seriously considering buying this phone till I saw the photo quality - its relatively below average when compared to a similarly priced phone like, say, the K750i. Other than that the phone appears to be pretty good; but I really want a decent camera.

How does it compare to the Sony E 750 and 800s?

My friend purchased the Sony E 750 from Dick Smith (Prepaid) for $275. But the Nokia 6233 seems to have better build qualities. Looks and feels solid.

I heard that the Sony E 750 and 800 have better photos but is the Nokia really that much worse?

So yesterday i got a call from my local Telstra shop telling me to come in an select a 'new phone' as my plan had been renewed ( On a group plan with work) So I went in and had an option of:

v3x, Slvr7, Samsung Flip and the 6233. I chose the 6233 without hesitation, mainly because i hadn't researched if it was any good, choose it purely on price.

Can anyone tell me what it has over my current phone? A SE k750i? My SE is only a couple of weeks old and is a great phone, im just wondering if i should open the packaging on the 6233 and have a look, or just chuck it up on ebay.

Cheers

It's the 'usual' phone package without all the whistles. I've been using mine for several days now.

3G (2100Mhz) capable. But also 900/1800Mhz GSM.
Stereo loudspeakers, MP3 capability.
2MP (average performance though. Arguably SE camera phones have better cameras). Does shoot limited video modes.
MicroSD expandable memory. Comes with 64Mb M.SD and roughly the same internal memory.
No camera on the front which makes video calling on 3G a moot point.
Polyphonic ringtones.
The usual SMS (quite fast T9, not laggy like some interfaces), MMS, WAP, GPRS, Bluetooth, IrDA capability.
Comes with pair of headphones (nothing fantastic) and software. No USB cable.

Nothing fantastic but an allround great package with almost all the features you probably 'would' use in an everyday phone. If I've missed anything, www.nokia.com.au does exist with phone specs ;)

Khalid, Camera sound can be switched off from the camera settings.
Not sure about other questions though.

===

I've now used this phone for just over a month now here's a bit more summary.

As a phone, I have nothing to fault for it.

- I love the design of the Grey/Silver model. So luxury looking.
- Reception is good. Nothing noticeably different.
- Speaker phone is loud and clear. Even while driving.
- The keypad buttons are really solid and great to use. (No sign of paint peeling etc yet)
- Photo quality is not that great. but good enough for mms.
- Having no flash really sucks sometimes. (I like to use them as a torch sometimes.)
- Video quality is really good. Much better than N73. I use it heaps.

Hi all.
I just got 6233 today- and it is on Telstra's network. Can someone please explain to me how to actually create and send a multimedia message? Stupid question- but I have tried everything. As soon as I insert a picture to send, the message facility turns off and goes back to the desktop screen? I have read the book- pretty vague. I really need to know this as this is a work phone- and it will be used to send pics to other phones or emails by MMS. Also- what's all this "slides" business about? I really can't work it out.
Thanx to all- hope to hear from someone soon.

I think when you send the message it goes back to the main message and a message box is up the top of the screen

My girlfriend got hers last week. Yesterday she picked up a new one as the other one wouldn't send MMS, and we found out last night the one she got to replace it wouldn't either. She picked up another this afternoon, I've just been trying to get it to work for the last two hours, it can send video and sound clips via MMS but refuses to send a photo, even when the photo is small and low in file size, regardless of whether it's on the phone memory or the stock memory card. Every time you try and attach or send a photo via MMS it whitescreens or completely reboots.

I have recently purchased a Nokia 6233, Great phone except for the low battery life on it.

My question for anyone out there with the same phone is :-

I have replaced my THB Bury cradle to a compliant Nokia 6233 (THB) cradle and it works fine although the lights on my phone do not stay on at all whilst in the handsfree which can be distracting when trying to use in the dark -

My previous phone (Nokia 6320i) had an option under enhancements to keep lights on - Is there a new firmware or any cheat to establish this on this phone whilst int he handsfree?

Thank you for emailing Nokia Careline.

In response to your inquiry, please be advised that when the Nokia 6233 is paired with a compatible Nokia car kit, there is no option to set the backlight to permanently stay on. This is because the phone itself does not support any backlight adjustment settings. The backlight will go off after approximately 10 seconds whether used in a car kit or without it.

Nevertheless, we will take this as your feedback and forward it on to the relevant department for further consideration.

The MicroSD cover won't close properly when a card is inserted.

This happend to me twice, and now third time completly lost the little bugger. I just bought a 1gb of EBAY for $33.94 AUD including postage (cheap).

I am thinking about supergluing it shut or putting bluetac in the slot.

Does anyone else have this issue or any better ideas ?

The phone is great , the only other issue is the stupid accending ringtone (saftey feture hahaha) when on full volume ring tone.

I have a question though, is there a way to make the phone confirm when a text/mm message has been sent? Out here I have dodgy reception and I never know if the message goes through because all it says is 'message sending'. Is there a way to make it tell you 'message sent' like old Nokias did?
