It seems like a lot of people*, like me, are having trouble getting their external monitor working with the MBP in XP. On the thread* there is some mention about the X1600 having difficulty driving external displays, but I couldn't find the actual article on ati.com.

While Windows boots, the display is mirrored on my MBP and Benq FP71E+ (via VGA), but as soon as Windows XP gets to the login screen the image on the external disappears. ATI control panel shows two monitors, but no matter how I troubleshoot, the external won't get a signal.

The monitor works fine under OSX.

Is there a secret to getting it working under XP?

Cheers,
Broad

Have you tried updating the drivers?

I've been mucking around with boot camp for about a week now and still can't get my external monitor working under XP. I've got the latest bootcamp drivers install, XP can see that a second monitor exists using the display control panel but still no image.

Does anyone have any solutions or hint s to get dual monitors working under XP?

After opening the Display control, click Settings tab, then the Advanced button at the bottom.

I think there is an ATI tab. Have a look around. Sorry my advice isn't more specific but I only have a MacBook and the Intel driver for Windows does dual monitors no worries.

ArnStar is right, you need to turn "on" the external monitor in the ATI settings area. I can't remember the name of the right tab, however it should have 4 panels. The first panel will be your MBP monitor, and the second your external monitor - click the button to activate the second monitor. You can then use the normal Windows display monitor to turn on extended display.

Sorry it is a bit vague, however I am on the Mac OS X side. However I had no problem getting all of the external monitors I tried at work and home to work with my MBP once I had activated external monitor support.

Thanks for the tip. I noticed that this intel based control panel had the option to choose mirrored or dual monitors and following your instruction chose the dual monitor function. Looking at the windows based display control panel, extend desktop was already selected, but still my apple branded cinema display remains off. Now if I look at the intel control panel, I'm told to attached the second monitor.

Need I say that things simply work under OS X????

theres much more stuffing around required to get it working. i spent about 15 minutes getting it going the other day - where as osx can do it within seconds.

theres 2 different methods you can choose - 1 method for spanned monitors, 1 method for mirrored monitors..

which one are you after?

ok..

(this is off the top of my head.. sorry if it's not word for word correct)

- right click the windows desktop and goto properties
- then goto settings tab
- you should see two monitors here
- right click on the grayed out one and click attached
- then you should be able to select these options for either display:
- make this my primary display
- extend my desktop onto this display
- then click apply

that should be it.. but if not there's an advanced button on that window - click it.

- click on the displays tab and you should see flat panel, external monitor, etc.
- theres little power buttons above each display, use this to turn displays on and off
- if you see a 1 and 2 button in each display, the display with 1 is your primary, 2 is your secondary.

hope this helps.

Hey guys. I have also had this problem on my 17" MBP using Boot Camp 1.01 Beta. I wrote a little tutorial on how I got mine to work.
