Just wondering if anyone knows of an open-source or more cost-effective alternative to Exchange. Mainly I am after something that will support the calendar/group appointments etc that exchange has to offer. It must work alongside MS Outlook.

Any help would be much appreciated!

There are two I know of

www.scalix.com/index.html
mirror.open-xchange.org

I tried the predecessor of OpenXchange (SUSE Linux Open Exchange aka SLOX) a while ago and found it very lacking. The Outlook support was there but it was far from complete and full of bugs.

I am not sure what the other one is like but I have heard good things about it, but nothing in relation to Outlook.

We ended up purchasing MS Exchange after trying SLOX and have had the system working well for the past 1.5 years.

The other systems were good but really for the best, most hassle free experience go MS Exchange. It works better than any other program and is, IMHO, the best solution out there for Outlook.

If you use outlook, use exchange - don't stuff around with low quality crappy immitations.

Only really need this for group calendar function, not mail. So hopefully there will be lesk risk of stuff-ups

if its not very formal, or its between only a few people, google calendar can make group calendars...and i reckon google cal is much nicer than outlook....=D

One more to add to the mix - www.zimbra.com which has a very nice Ajax front end. Another vote for Scalix too.
