Beta 2 has just gone public. x86 and x64 for your downloading pleasure.

download.windowsvista.co...x86/download.htm

You can grab your key from the download link here. Each CD key will activate up to 10 PCs.
www.microsoft.com/window...ady/preview.mspx

x86 ISO (direct link) 3,355,598,848 bytes, MD5: 0e733ab1a8e8ff9a8684fd3639332773
x64 ISO (direct link) 4,309,368,832 bytes, MD5: e43502d0a15eadd551119d5639859e04
winmd5sum (Run this on your ISO and verify it matches the above.)

If you end up with an incomplete 13MB file, 300MB file etc. cancel and try again. If it still persists, flush your DNS cache (Start...run...ipconfig /flushdns), and try again. Hopefully you'll hit a different server. LeechGet appears to have problems, try using something else.

If you get an Access Denied error, wait and try again.

I cant get it to start the ISO download (Ill try IE) but the CD key thing worked fine.

Login at www.live.com before trying it (sign in top right)

The key was on the page, not in an email.

Welcome to popular Microsoft Betas.

It happens with Office aswell, even after a number of upgrades and in the private Beta.

The "download manager" flat out refused but the links to the ISOs work.

Speeds have been all over the shop, from 600+ to 12KB/sec.

MS should really use Torrents :)

Are ISP's allowed to host windows content? Or did I read they couldn't host Updates for windows. Was thinking off getting Gamearena to host the beta.. since most people on BP have 10gig dl limits. And Gamearena files are a BP customers best friend.

And thanks for the info, Get my Vista install... installed and working good before a Lan, show off my sexc vista.

I should off downloaded the 64bit >< 120mb into the download cant...stop...10gig BP cap... :(

Newbie question, and slightly OT... But how would torrents handle 2000+ people connecting at the same time. Would it hinder the torrent (because it has to transfer all this peer info)? Or would it make it better?

Yes it would as long as the tracker itself could handle it.

The main problem with bittorrent in this instance is that you couldnt take advantage of the Akamai network for the tracker itself.

Acatually, multiple hosts, so it could.

Yeah, Torrents would be nice

A lot better than MS's download server attempting to push out 3-4GB to 2000+ people at the same time ;)

MS have plenty of bandwidth (its just not enough for something of this magnitude), the tracker would just need the moderate amount of CPU to stay up. And if it did go down, DHT would pick up the slack.

Sounds tempting, but seeing the torrent has just started you may get the same problems anyway with only one or two seeds...

Why don't MS let Vista Beta 2 be hosted on other mirrors (Like Node, Optus, Bigpond etc)? I see their concern with the file being "tampered with", but couldn't they build a little MD5 checker that people can download, and use to double check their download? Would save them a heap of bandwidth, and people's frustration...

The Whirlpoolian community should collaborate together and mail out DVD's to those that can't download it (like me :P)

When finished downloading burn two DVD's and send out to someone else. Then they burn 2 more DVD's from the one they receive and send to someone else again... soon everyone who wants Vista beta 2 wil have it :D

On another (perhaps more serious) note, can you install this and dual boot with WinXP? On the website it doesn't say specifically this is supported...

You could with the previous betas so I'd presume so. Just install to a different location and the Vista bootloader should pick up your XP install fine.

I've heard the 64bit edition will be heaps more stable than the 32bit edition. But this is largely due to their drivers, and a few other features that the 32bit edition won't have... The downside is that 64bit drivers and app's won't be as common for the meantime...

It's not just a dozen or so servers. Akamai have the biggest server farms available for hosting downloads...billions of dollars worth of server gear located around the globe. They host downloads for many of the big corps like MS, Apple etc.

If Akamai can't handle it nothing will...and it looks like they can't at the moment. ;-)

I've been following the comments thread on digg (www.digg.com/software/Vi...be_public_today_), and someone has suggested using the Downthemall FF extension.

If you use this, make sure you increase the timeout to something large..like 10 minutes. Also, you will need to keep an eye on it as you will still get server errors, and need to resume.

I've done this and I am getting fast speeds (better than what I was getting with wget, DAP, etc).

I wonder how many people are all trying to download at once. Luckily I have a colleague who already has it from the MSDN thing, so was able to get a copy of that and have now get my key using the methods described in this thread.

Is the public release stable enough to use as a 24/7 OS, and is there any kind of evaluation period, eg. it will only work for 30 days then you have to reinstall...?

And would I be correct to say that if I download the 32-bit version, all programs that I currently have installed on my XP Pro installation will work?

What's 3D performance like, will BF2, Hitman Blood Money etc work OK?

THey expect 2 million people to try the CTP.

So I would say the hundreds of thousands will try to get it today.

Lucky you :D, Im guessing 512k ADSL just doesn't cut it with these bigg files :P. "Resumed 313 times. 10hrs Remain". Hope to have it done by friday night, install it and have some blingy graphics for a lan. But I highly doubt it

I chose 32bit version... Mainly because I cant find drivers for few things Mobo and w\e. Gfx is fine but yeh I dont really want to have much downtime. Hopeing most off my apps still run :)

Yeh it will, Vista runs fairly nicely with 1GB RAM. 2GB is optimal, and 1GB is nice, but anything less than 1GB makes it run fairly dodgy.

I've been wondering if I should stick my old 512MB stick in with my 1GB to make 1.5GB, just for a little extra performance. Vista uses huge amounts of page file, I've noticed that when I boot up it's around 700MB and it's goes up to over 1GB when you have a few applications running.

I installed Beta 2 (build 5384) today on my laptop. Managed to crash it once during the install (ejected CD to read CD-KEY and pressed OK before inserting CD) and once while using IZArc to extract an Office 2007 zip file.

AVG 7 free refuses to install because it says it's incompatible.

One of my .NET 2.0 programs throws a strange exception for some reason.

I don't like the new Explorer and Open/Save dialog boxes. Maybe I'll just need to adjust to them.

On the up-side it detected everything but my audio drivers. Setting up the wireless network was very easy. Gadgets seem interesting. Interface seems sleek.

Edit: more negatives - adobe pro 7 activation says it requires you to log in as an admin, even though I already am.

Ouch! I cannot imagine the traffic flowing from Microsoft's servers at the moment. They can handle critical updates without a sweat but this thing seems to have them stumped. Perhaps they don't count it as being too critical and are limiting the bandwidth? Even still, it shows the interest there is in Vista... I don't think MS have anything to worry about in the competition at the moment.

Yeh hardly any antiviruses are compatible. One that is and works a charm is PCCillin 14 BETA. Here is the process to get started with it: www.zoomerang.com/recipi...p=WEB225C5M8J48Z

As for programs that use Java, download this to stop the Aero interface from shutting itself down while using programs like Limewire, Azureus, Opera etc... download.java.net/jdk6/binaries

And a direct download for Windows offline installer: download.java.net/downlo...-02_jun_2006.exe

I have managed to get iTunes working with Aero as well, I have no idea how I did it. But with a working antivirus and Java platform, using Vista is alot smoother.

Incidentally, can you change keys to another product version? Do they give you the key(s) to do so? (Ie. Downgrade from the default Ultimate version, to say Home Premium?) Do you even need a key to do so?

You can change keys, and yes, they do give you a key when you register to download vista beta 2 from there website.

I'm not sure about upgrading/downgrading to different versions though.

If you get a 13 meg file or the server is giving you incorrect sizes, flush your dns cache (ipconfig /flushdns) and try to resume. Hopefully you'll end up on another server.

I don't know why 13 is the magic number, but quite a few people have been ending up with 13MB x64 ISOs.

Unless there is a reason not to, ie. 32-bit drivers exist but 64-bit do not, just go 64.

XP x64 lacks 16-bit compatibility and a lot of the driver support that standard XP does.
Since Vista is still in beta things are a little more even driver wise, and Vista doesn't have 16-bit compat at all.

Yes to iTunes and Office 2007, big no to PowerDVD. No versionof PowerDVD is compatible, and it will refuse to load.

I've had to use WinDVD, and even then when you try and play a video the Aero interface turns off.

With the latest Java and iTunes/Quicktime and Java, the Aero interface should stay on though, it does for me.

Depending on both luck of the draw and what ISP you're with (or rather, what DNS server you're using), different people are going to be downloading from different servers. (There are a list of a few on page 2 if you want to force one via your hosts file)

Some of the servers are completely screwed. No download program is going to solve the problem of a webserver that reports the wrong file size or claims the file is complete when it's not.

I've only tried it on numerous 32 bit builds, including Beta 2. I don't think it would work in 64 either though. It just comes up with a compatibility message and then the program doesn't even load at all.
