Hi all,
Just a couple of questions relating to Vista. I'm currently using Vista BETA 2 (Feb 06) and am just wondering:
1. How (if possible) do I change settings for the "Windows needs your permission to use this program" dialog box so I can load a task/program without continuous prompting?
2. Also I'm trying to change an icon for a shortcut but it denies me access, how do I gain access?
Thanks.

I think this is what you may be looking for.
To disable UAC:
-Run > secpol.msc > Local Security Settings > Local Policies > Security Options
-Scroll to User Account Control: Run all users, including administrator, as standard users select Disabled, close
-Reboot 69.61.21.250/forum/post-...f5494cf6ad564585
And to enable UAC again just use the same process but choose "Enable" instead of "Disable". C6ZO6 writes... 2. Also I'm trying to change an icon for a shortcut but it denies me access, how do I gain access?
I think the above should solve this.

Paul Thurrott makes comment about this type of annoyance in his Vista Feb '06 review:
"Where Vista Fails" www.winsupersite.com/rev...ista_5308_05.asp
Here's what you have to go through to actually delete (those) files in Windows Vista. First, you get a File Access Denied dialog explaining that you don't, in fact, have permission to delete a ... shortcut?? To an application you just installed??? Seriously?
I think along with its DRM, this will be the first of many annoyances about Vista for many users. JMO.

The UAC popups have been reducing in the builds after Beta 2.
Hopefully by RTM it will only intrude when it should.
(.. and thanks for that link PA28).

The only new DRM is HDCP *SUPPORT*.
Stop beating that drum, it is a stupid druim to beat and a false one, they are just supporting new DRM that is for HD-DVD and Blueray, they would be stupid not too.
If your not watching HDCP encoded content, it isnt running.

To use the term "stupid" suggests you speak with greater authority on the subject matter at hand, and yet neither you nor I have anything more than speculation as to Vista's final DRM content, because is isn't out yet. Unless of course you are part of the MS Vista design team (?).
I happen to be an advocate against DRM, for reasons a little more disconcerting than just copy-protection, namely civil rights and liberties of individuals; and the information I have read over the past few years justifies my feelings about it as a concept. Thus my concern. But until Vista is out you and I both have little more hard-evidence than speculation. Certainly not enough to call something "stupid" without sounding amusingly ignorant yourself.

And neither do you. Vista does not enforce more DRM in relation to what you can do with the computer. It meerly supports one more format out of the box. It does not mean you need a HDCP monitor for anything but playing HDCP encoded content at full quality. Microsoft will probably release nothing with HDCP, companies like Universal Studios who dont understand digital media are the ones that dont release much, and make it so bogged down in DRM that it ruins the content. Other companies like Apple with it's Fairplay make DRM that you basically dont come in contact with except if you try and do something against their copyright with it (like give a copy to a friend).
If you really hate DRM dont go beating on Microsofts door, they need to have support in their OS, why? Because a good part of Windows is it's ubqious support for all devices and formats, it misses out on nothing.
If you want to change how we get our digital media, or if we get it at all, talk to movie and music studios, talk to US senators who put forward bills like the DCMA, US laws influence what the world gets.
It's like whinging to LG because the DVD you bought is a crappy movie, your targetting people who really have no control. If MS dont have HDCP support, guess what, no watching HDCP content at full res on your computer, that would be a bad thing.
Also, speak with your wallet, dont buy anything with protection you do not like, and publishers will stop using it. Ubisoft with Starforce is a classic example, gamers rebel, complain about what they do not like, show up starforces faults, show good reason why they shouldnt use it and generally shun away from Ubisoft because of that protection. Guess what, Ubisoft are no longer going to use Starforce. PUBLISHERS are who decides what goes in the content / disc, not Microsoft, or any other device builder.
Once again: Publishers choose what DRM is used, not device builders. Consumers are the most powerful thing to Publishers. US laws affect what the world gets, so DRM related bills in the US influence us all.
EDIT: It is "stupid" because your attacking a company that does not have much influence over content. As above, target publishers, they decide, not Microsoft.

Well, that's really the crux of it. Your association is firstly incorrect, but secondly you miss the point of how DRM will be implemented. Your faith in consumer's good sense (and not gullibility due to faith in the 'system') is to a great extent idealistic: consumers will dictate the market to one extent, but they will also be happily led.
But I never attacked a company particularly: MS are part of the TCPA/TCG and thus are part of the 'system' implementing DRM etc. Thus my concern.
But best cease with the "stupid" as it just has me clicking "herring" for personal attack ... :\
EDIT: Good link on DRM, TCPA etc: www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~rja14/tcpa-faq.html

True or false: If no publisher puts DRM in their content will we have DRM?
But I never attacked a company particularly: MS are part of the TCPA and thus are part of the 'system' implementing DRM etc. Thus my concern.
So is every major electrical manufacturer and publisher. They all want their say. Id be horrified if it was just manufacturers, or just publishers, etc.
But best cease with the "stupid" as it just has me clicking "herring" for personal attack ... :\
I do not believe that I have attacked you, I have attacked what you are saying. IE I am going after the ball not the player. Just because we dont agree doesnt mean my posts should be deleted.
But that is ofcourse for the mods to decide.

To Hellman109 and 5150. You both have equally valid arguments, each in favour for your point of view. However I think that not much will be achieved by trying to argue this one out. Call it a draw imho.
