Meat Sack, could you put my avatar in the wlr.css file? (Is that still how it works?)

Done, had to shrink it down some though sorry.

For everyone who wants an avatar:
For future reference I think about 80px as the width is what I'm going to aim for. Also if you want to save me some time, please upload to a 3rd party image hosting site. This is so people can't change what their image is after I add them to wlr.css. (this is to stop people from changing their avatar to an inappropriate image; I'm not trying to be annoying.)

Like imageshack?

Don't those sites have a time limit on them?

Yes, one year of inactivity, so that timer gets reset every time the image is accessed. (at least that's how it use to work, may have changed.)

This is from the Imageshack FAQ. It seems it's ok to use Imageshack to host avatars.
How do I hotlink an avatar on a forum or message board?

Paste the "Direct Link" code, available at the bottom of the upload-done page, into the "Avatar" location field on your forum or message board.

Some more info:
How much bandwidth can I use?

ImageShack allows each image 100 megabytes of transfer per hour. If an image exceeds this amount, it will be rendered inaccessible.

Few thoughts about avatars....

- With Aus Leo's one, his avatar is next to his name?
- Maybe the text should be aligned top for tall avatars?

Yeah, it's too small for the way I insert them, though he asked for it to be changed which I forgot to do, I'll have to go dredging through the old thread and try to find his new image, that should fix it.

Maybe the text should be aligned top for tall avatars?
It would be a bit fiddly to do that on a post by post basis based on avatar size; and applying it to all the posts seems like a bit of overkill. If you want it for your version though, here is the css for doing it to all posts (I know not exactly what you asked for):
.bodytext {vertical-align:top !important}
You can put that in your usercontent.css files (should be in your firefox profile directory.) Or you can add it to the wlr script (just insert it in one of the first addGlobalStyle functions.. )

Also I think I will shrink some of those larger avatars anyway, so it won't be much of a problem in the future.

Maybe you should make a temporary wiki for all the image URL's. People without avatars could also add their avatar addresses.

Just a thought.

Eh, they don't really deserve on; anyway the odds of actually seen a banned user are very low, there are only a few, about two I know of.

Damn I was hoping we'd be able to take the first thread over 100 pages without anyone noticing.

Hey! I just noticed Johnny Bravo has my avatar! I had to edit the script to get it back. Get yer own Johhny..... oh, you have :/

If someone has tested the latest versions of GM and the WLR script can they let us know please? I've messed around with all versions of both and the only way I can get it working satisfactorily is to use GM 0.3.3 and the latest script but I've just noticed that JB's Whirlcode buttons are missing again in the Whim Reply box, uhhh...

Oh no, avatars aren't working at all now, it's a bit higgledy piggledy.

Meat Sack, just some further closure on running the CSS file off the hard-drive; it doesn't work properly. It won't kill the script, but it does some very funny things with it though. I will experiment a bit more though. Bit of a major problem, sometimes none of the scripts load; not the quick nav and not the wlr, and hence not Johnny Bravo's Whirlcode. Can I assume it is a problem with GM 0.51 and not the scripts?

for me, GM 0.5.1 occaisionally doesn't inject scripts, however it's very rare

as I've said before, I think old slow PC's suffer this non-injection problem LESS than the speed demons out there, it has something to do with timing!

I really don't know. Can't really say one way or the other until it happens to me.
If you look in the javascript console, and look for any errors where the source file is C:\wherever\greasemonkey\is\instal led\whirlpoollastread.user.js they could really help.

If there aren't any, then it probably just is greasemonkey itself having hiccups. I haven't had any 'no scripts' running problems. I have had a couple of times where the script ran twice on a page, but those only happened when I used the back button before the current page had finished loading, so I think its just a caching issue.

Yeah I saw that too in one of the ItN threads, forget which one exactly, but I remember thinking even the title of the thread was a massive troll.

Yeah I mentioned that one when I released it. I had to release it earlier than I wanted to, so some things that were meant to be dynamic, were still hard coded. If you open up the script and search for var userNum = 37853; and change the number to your own. In the proper version, it will probably just grab it automagically from the 'welcome back' section on the forum pages.

Hey why didn't the spell checker pick up 'automagically', is it an actual word now? apparantely it is an actual word, albeit classified as 'jargon'.

I can't get to the settings, nothing at all is working under either monitor setting. I'm running the latest GM with the latest WLR script. I've removed and re-installed both GM and WLR but I have a no-go. I tried going back to 0.3.3 but only some settings work.

What it is basically saying is that it didn't find the 'Post Reply' link. This could be 3 things:
*there is some version of 'replies.cfm' page where, for some reason, the Post Reply link isn't on the page (or is put somewhere the script doesn't look)
* the page didn't fully load before the script ran.
* going by memory, wasn't there one version of Johnny's Whirlcode script where he put a link to his settings next to the 'post reply' link? If so, and you are running it, that might be the problem, (more likely one of the first two though.)

There might have been; although you might be thinking of the image link through script; there is a link for the settings of that next to Post Reply.

Yeah I'm quite sure FF and all the extensions are fully up-to-date. I don't really know whether it is GM related. The feedback agent has only popped up a few times; a lot of the time, the PC is just locking up (not the old POS either) and it appears that FF is the problem. Not much I can do.

See if doing a clean install (ie. trash your document and settings as well) fixes it. I had a weird issue when I upgraded from 0.3 to 0.5.1 of GM where it did some weird thing and GM just fell apart. I then did a clean reinstall and everything seems fine.

I rarely if at all have FF crash on me. Usually when ff does crash on people it is because of an extension or because one or more are conflicting with one another.

Not with the current setup. I could change it so they were actual <img> tags injected into the script, but with people complaining about speed, it would probably just slow things down further... If you're talking about specific avatars (like the fat controllers) I plan on shrinking some of them soon.

Yeah I know that; I just thought I'd give the avatars a chance. I was previously running it with with ranks on and avatars off. If injecting it using an <img> tag would slow it down, it's probably best not to do it then. And yes I am specifically referring to The Fat Controller's (no offence) but it is really annoying. Maybe anyone who sends in an avatar should be gently reminded to keep it a sensible size.

I like the graphical representation right now. Less so the avatars, but the demo you've shown is much better than what it is right now.

OK I think I have it working the way I want:
img354.imageshack.us/img...7883/demo4yv.gif

As you should be able to see,
• there isn't anymore wrapping.
• Long quips have a semi-transparent background that goes over the avatar, so you can still read them.
• I moved the ranks down and 'attatched' them to the vote block. Now it doesn't matter how long a persons name is, the rank will display correctly.
• There's a 'default' avatar, a light grey swirl, for people without an avatar defined.

This solution should work with the current released code. If you want to change to it, change all instances of wlr.css to wlrx.css
and all instances of theme.css to themex.css .

There is a problem with it though, it doesn't actually save space. To get the css to work properly I have to use 'absolute' positioning instead of 'relative'. To fix this I have to insert a 'container' div around the user info. This isn't in the current version, but will be in the next one, and it will get rid of that wasted space underneath the avatar/user-info in short posts.

Nice looking new version... not really fond of that quip over the avatar though.... kind of annoying and somewhat restrictive in that you have to have it short or it interferes with the avatar.

Would Avatars look weird on the right side rather then the left side? ie. above the herring, anchor etc.

It's meant to look like that. That's the alternate link style so it can still be used when you filter a thread to one persons posts. (I'm thinking of changing it so that style is used only when quoting someone on the filtered pages, as I imagine it takes a little more server grunt to process when someone clicks it.)

Don't know if its just me, but the whirls (user categories) aren't positioning properly for all the 'odd' user categories... Mods, Conspiracy, Reporters...

And ISP reps (well, at least iiNet ones) are void of all formatting. No align to right or whirls. Mod powers or not.

Yeah I was just testing things out, so I only did it for 'regular' users to get a feel for it. To stop the odd/even bug open the script and find:
var theme_alt =2; and change the 2 to a 1.

but yeah, no mods or CTs etc... till I settle on a layout.

Meat Sack just am looking at the modification you made, and it has major aesthetic issues in small monitor view, though it looks better than I previously thought in large monitor view.

Yeah, it's not designed for small monitor views just yet. Though to be honest, that looks better than I would've thought it would. (not saying it looks good, just that I thought it would be even more messed up than that.)

Doesn't really matter to me; the only computer I use SM view on is too slow to be running avatars anyway. But just an observation for anyone that does; it won't look good. I'm sure with some fiddling I could make it look even worse though :P

Erm... I don't have Smaller Monitor settings in the WLR settings. You see, to get everything going again I had to revert to GM 0.3.3 and it's behaving strangely. Everything is going ok but some things are not where they should be or not there at all. But it's not all the time either. It's freaking me out.

You don't have to change to the 'x' versions of the css files. The old wlr.css and theme.css are still up and working as far as I know.

I thought you were serious that it was a news story. It's only a JOKE between me and Wonko; being that it is an AMUSING QUIP. I thought everyone had figured it was a joke by now.

On topic; Meat Sack would it be possible to add some sort of manual mark as read link, so that if a deleted post is the last post, us Greasers can manually say we have read all posts. It's not a major issue, but it can be annoying if there are threads with deleted posts as the last post.

Are you guys still getting this problem with the new version of Greasemonkey? I hadn't experienced the preview bug, but at a guess it might have been due to the script not firing on some pages, which was a problem of GM 0.5.1 in 1.0+ browsers. While I can't say for sure the problem has been fixed in 0.5.3, I haven't come across it yet. If it is still a problem, can you break down what you are doing for this bug to show, as I haven't been able to replicate a problem from just your general descriptions.

Rang Dog Marv writes...

Actually I just looked at some deleted posts, and they still have their anchors (not the link that says anchor, but the anchor itself) So if I just change the code to grab the reply # out of there instead of the 'anchor' link, the script should do it automatically. though I'm also thinking of adding a 'mark all as read' and 'stop tracking' options for individual threads...

Yes that would be fantastic; I have a lot of threads that I have a look at and decide I'm not interested, so it's annoying to have them tracked.

EDIT: My lRead values just rolled back to previous values. Anyone else ever get this. I might try with GM 0.53.

Probably about a week or maybe two. I did have something alluding to that as well before, and maybe two months ago, my quip was the same as what you thought you saw. Remember;

I had stop hitting preview for a while but I just tested it then and, yes, I am still getting this problem. I am running GM0.5.3, wlr0.63 and ff1.0.6.

can you break down what you are doing for this bug to show,
Just then I got it to happen by hitting a 'reply to this post' link. I think Hilighted a section of text and hit 'insert quote' i then typed something after the quoted section and then hit 'show preview'. I then get the preview the the 'reply' box losses all of it's text. I'm happy to do more testing if required.

edit: OK.... it seems that i can make the bug happen without inserting a quote. also also without typing any of my own words. in fact. i think it's pretty much happening any time i hit the preview button.

edit2: a little more testing.... it does NOT happen if i use the q-quote button. it also doesn't happen if i press the show preview button after having used the q-quote buttone.
also, hitting the show preview button on an edit screen does not produce the bug

I think I updated all versions of the avatar CSS for Crazy Horse and Philch's avatars. I'm running newer code, and it doesn't play with the older CSS so I can't check it without re-installing the older code, (something I don't want to do every time I change an avatar.) If someone can confirm/deny if their new avatars are working that would be great.

Here's my latest take on compact name blocks.
ideatriage.com/avatar/layout_demo2.gif

Features are:
• there is no more empty space down the bottom.
• The quip has been moved to the last line, so long quips don't cut avatars in half.
• User info (User#, online status, # of posts) is invisible unless you mouse over the user block. (image was meant to show this in Philch's block. You can see the user info, but the mouse pointer is hidden due to the way I got the screen capture.)
• User rank in text form is gone (seemed redundant to have the rank image and the text).

I also found the bug with the preview 'disappearing bug' and fixed it.

Unfortunately the rest of the code isn't ready to release, so as a temporary work around, you should be able to avoid the bug by having something in the quick quote box when you go to reply to a post. If the quick quote box is empty, then there will be a problem.

Should have an update in a couple of days anyway.

Same goes for having the 'special users' whirls aligning on right? all my special users (mods, CT's, reporters) align to middle/leftish (as in pic).

Is that an on/off feature (or one i can easily configure in my mirrored .css's) once its released?
I want to always be able to see a users post # and user # (good indication of age/participation at a glance if i don't recognise the user).

Yeah its all actually done with CSS. The only thing that stops my new version from working on 0.63 is a div wrapper I've added around the user block to help with positioning. So yeah, this is just going to be a 'theme'. I'll update the old CSS 'theme' files to work with the new code, once everyone has it. The new version isn't going to be compulsory or anything.

I think I fixed up the special users, but once again I'll need someone to verify.
