Ive been using Azureus for a long time now, and never really bothered to see what the smileys meant. But lately, my speeds have been going really slow. So i looked it up :P

Im always getting yellow smileys, never once a green smiley! The FAQ says i have a NAT or Firewall problem. But i dont have a router. My optus Cable modem is plugged directly into my ethernet port. Windows XP firewall is on, but ive given exceptions to javaw.exe and azureus and the listening port i chose.

Is it something to do with the optus modem?? or what. (im runnin SP2)
stats:
Naruto ep 125 torrent. Seeds: 2095, Peers 751. I connect to about 40-50 seeds and 30 or so peers, and still only get like 5-20k/s download.

Now i usually download from kazaa or international ftp's at 600+ k/s.

What am i doing wrong, and how can i fix this? any help?

I've got the same problem but different set up. I have no software firewall running, just a NAT going on the router. I've set up port forwarding (6881-9) and still the yellow face prevails. My download speeds are respectable for a 51 kb connection (tops out at about 20 kB down and 10 kB up) but wonder why I can't get the green face?

You don't need a port range, repeat you don't need a port range, it is recommended that you use a port high in number one of the 40,000 to 65535.

I assume that you have the modem connected to your NIC with a crossover cable and not a standard network cable? I have a router and find windows firewall causes problems, so I turn it off altogether. Maybe dl the (legal) free version of Zonealarm, set it up, forward ports and turn off windows firewall?

That might just make things worse. I had ZoneAlarm installed, and could never get green smileys even though I had all the exceptions/port forwards set up. In the end I uninstalled it, replaced it with Sygate Personal Firewall and voila - green smileys. If you're going to try a different firewall, don't use ZoneAlarm.

Zonealarm was the only software firewall that I could think of, off the top of my head anyway, that provides a (legit) freeware version. I have the Netcomm NB5 modem router. It works a charm, so I don't have much use for software firewalls and thus know very little about them.

Sygate is free. Zone Alarm (version 4 aside) is a hunk of junk.

Im always yellow here as well and have SYGATE setup to accept all ports that Sun Microsystems requests. My router is forwarding the ports and still no luck.

Anyone else have any other ideas?

Thanks.

Sun Microsystems requests? (please explain)

When you install Azureus let it set itself up automatically to your connection speed, don't change anything, repeat don't change anything, then save and then restart it, choose a port number in the 40000 to 50000 range (1 only) and forward that TCP once you do that then use Azureus to test that port. I will assume that you have the latest client and the latest java engine installed, remember to untick the UnPNP plugin.

Could it also be that you are using two routers and a firewall, did you try the one router and no firewall option? (I somehow think that having two routers and a firewall is probabaly causing this problem)

I would also advise you to post your problem in DSL Hardware (if your current problem isn't solved) also why have you now posted your problem in this thread when your existing thread is still active?

I was under the impression that the smiley only turns green when you are uploading to someone, so maybe the torrent you are downloading only has seeds, or maybe you just aren't uploading to anyone as you don't have anything that anyone needs...

I've just been diagnosing this very problem this evening.

Lucky for me I know what I did to make it break.

Java 5.0 Update 2.

I have a Netgear Wireless Router using UPnP. It's been working fine with Azureus 2.2.0.2 with Java 5.0 fine for several weeks.

Tonight I installed the Update 2 because of the auto-update feature, and it basically broke Azureus. Same issue. Yellow health bar for all my previously green torrents.

A quick uninstall-reinstall-uninstall-rein stall between Java 5.0 original, Update 1 and Update 2.

Only the Java 5.0 Original works. Both Update 1 and 2 results in yellow torrents.

Hope this helps!

Basically Upnp is a protocol used for compatible routers and programs such as the speedtouch pro it allows the program to setup NAT when ever it is needed with auzreus it opens and closes the specific port when opening or closing the program and saves you having to either leave ports opened when not in use or continually setting it up when needed. For programs and routers that support upnp it saves a great deal of time fiddling with the ports

What port does the trackers you are using run on?

Are you behind a transparent proxy?

I would say, based on EagleHawk's post, that the Java Runtimes 5.0.1 and 5.0.2 are opening a new, undocumented port which the people experiencing problems don't have forwarded through their NAT, and which Azureus doesn't (yet) support using UPnP.

EDIT: After further investigation, see forum-replies.cfm?t=318548.

Its probably transparent proxy.

Go to options -> tracker -> client -> override tracker announce i.p
Put your i.p address in that box

See how that goes for you.

this should never happen (not saying it doesn't). if you pay for broadband, then its up to you what you use it for, not your ISP.

I'd installed Azureus on 3 different PCs and all of'em had the NAT problem. Solution was quick and simple. I changed the "Incoming TCP Listen Port" to port 80(this is the http port. Go to TOOLS>>>click NEXT>>>click NEXT again>>>>>fill the INCOMING TCP LISTEN PORT to port 80 and click on TEST. it should say OK. close the wizard and restart AZUREUS. thats it...enjoy the fun.

I'm running Azureus 2.2.0.2 on OS X 10.3 and was previously getting green faces for practically all my torrents. A recent update (don't remember whether it was Java or Azureus) has meant that i am only getting yellow smilies now for everything.

All my ports are forwarded correctly, and i don't think this is the problem as i have had plenty of green faces before.

Eaglehawk suggested downgrading Java, however his version (5.0) is different to the Mac one. Any (Mac specific) ideas on what i can do to get my green faces back?? Has anyone else running OS 10.3 had the problem of their previously green faces turning yellow?

Fixed my own problem.

Simple solution. Turns out that it had nothing to do with the update. The issue was that i had forwarded the same azureus port to 2 computers on my lan, when in fact each computer must use a separate port for bit torrent. Once each computer had its own port i had green smileys flying all over the place. It must have been a coincidence that i added a computer to the lan around the same time i updated azureus.

This was the site which helped me: www.slyck.com/news.php?story=493

Maybe this may help someone with a similar problem.

this problem was driving me INSANE!

For those using the Alcatel SpeedTouch Pro on any internet connection; I recommend downloading www.nubz.org/alcatool/Home.html

it allows you to skip acessing the modem by telnet and let's you add your own NATP (while telling you your external address; which is NOT your IP!)

Green faces for me at long last and downloads 2-3 times faster!
*edit: make that up to 10 times faster so far

I am having the same problem. I have a yellow smiley, but only for uploads or when it goes to seed. It flashed green a few times, but stayed yellow. For downloads (color is green) my speed is very slow only 15kbs, sometimes up to 25kbs. I am on a 500kbps Cable modem. I am not behind a firewall or on a router. What could possibly be the problem?

Running: Windows 2K
Cable Modem: Time Warner Cable - Road Runner

Just rename the file to its correct name and then copy it to a different dir. Then dl using Azureus it should resume, if it doesn't you have a backup of the file. Yellow smilies during seeding, nothing to worry about.

I keep getting a bloody NAT error, I've added services and exceptions in my windows connections section for port 6881 and 6990. I don't have a router, I have a DSL-300+. I have Blackice installed, so I tried stuffing around with exceptions there but no use. I also mucked around within Azureus with testing ports but ALWAYS get the NAT error....

It's starting to get to me when you have a 1500kbps connection and you can only download 15kb/sec.. any clues anyone?

The only smilies I get are the yellow frowny ones

I pretty much experienced the same problem, however my resolution to it was updating the firmware on the router from the factory version 1.03 to the latest 1.07 (i use netgear wgr614v5) and this has fixed this (amongst other) problems with the wireless router - infact, its made this router be the best one i've ever used.
