Hi All,

From time to time people on here may have some computer gear they cant use anymore or they belong to a not for profit organisation that would really like to obtain a computer. So I thought I would post the following for everyones information if they feel they can contribute by donating their old gear or from using the services listed below.

Feel free to add any that you know of.

Whatever you do, don't give that old computer to a High School.

In our Programming Class earlier this term, we ripped them apart and proceeded to put them back together. Afterwards, we destroyed them using "intresting" methods or we leeched the "good enough" parts ourselves :)

Dell used to have some place at Heidelburg in Melbourne that supposedly "recycled" old equiptment, but they charged money to collect goods. According to the site, it claims they may have that again: www.dell.com.au/recycle

Here's another place you can give spare pcs to: me! (i do want them, actually, for a linux server)

The Computerbank has a Victorian Branch in Melbourne with details on the web site at www.computerbank.org.au/victoria. They can be contacted by email, or by 'phone two days a week, details on that web page.

They have premises in Rosslyn St in Melbourne where they accept deliveries by arrangement, and depending on the amount/quality of equipment will arrange pickup.

The University of Melbourne, and I would imagine other unis, run computer recycling/collection programs a couple of times a year.
If you work at a uni/large company, you should look out for these and use them if appropriate.
Alternatively, if you know someone there, you could pass on a few things for them to dispose of (perhaps dodgy.... but better than going to landfill.)

IT Recyclers is aimed at business' and not really for the private sector.

The pricing is very competitive based on what normal rubbish removers would charge.

The collected IT equipment is guaranteed not to end up in landfill, after all the environment is more important.

Just donated 2 boxes of parts to:

Technical Aid for the Disabled (TAD), located in the Royal Rehabilitation Center in Sydney (227 Morrison Rd, Ryde)
their website: www.technicalaidnsw.org....ice/cmpLoan.html

they refurbish equipment from Pentium II's upwards for people with physical and intellectual disabilities - each PC is configured specifically for the client, and modified to take into account their accessibility. Each is provided with Windows ME (donated by Microsoft, apparently) and modem.
The warehouse they have is staffed entirely by volunteers, and it looks like they do great work.

Yes, but, the money they gain from selling those PC helps pay their staff and train CJP, giving people chances to start theri careers. The reason they have to charge quite an amount is because they have to cover labor costs such as transport, staffing, system testings, etc. I'd say by paying just a little more we give these trainees and CJP a great chance in life.

A few of the places on this link have already been mentioned. I work for The Smith Family. I know places like Work Ventures and Green PC do a good job. They clean up old PC's, and add any missing hardware or bits that need upgrading to a certain standard. And though they only put older OS's and software on it, its better than nothing.

These PC's go to disadvantaged people and families, so you would think they would make them cheaper. After all, most of you know you could build a new and probably better system for much the same price, but there's no guarantees or short term support that refurbishing companies provide.

Firstly I should that I manage an IT recycling business in Sydney and have done so for 5 years. I am aware of the rules regarding business advertising hence will keep my comments reasonably general and offer some points for consideration.
Recycling is a generic term that covers 2 main areas
End of use and end of life. The listed NFP are all worthy avenue for equipment for re-use -but actual environmentally sound disposal of IT equipment does cost money and these NFP's have a lot of unusable product "dumped" on them to which they just do not have the funds to pay for disposal of other peoples waste. Check with them first and don't force them to take the bad with the good.
Now disposing of the really unwanted product is a challenge. Here are some of the issues. The CRT contains a lead glass that is technically a hazardous waste (in NSW) and should be disposed of through a licence facility. Note you can still dump the whole unit legally -but the glass still leaches lead. Faulty monitors are also illegal to export. The plastics often contain particular flame retardants that again trigger hazardous waste issue and prohibit export, as do circuit boards and LCD's. If you have an interest in the environment and the opportunity to check the actual end of life treatment of your trusty 486, analog phone, old TV, cordless drill etc do so. Yes they all can and should be recycled but please do your research or you could be adding to the problem. Should it be easier to recycle your IT equipment -yes. Will it become easier -yes there are several proposals currently being considered by industry to tackle the problem -but some are still years away. Until then persevere and find a proper resting place.

If your PC is too far gone to be of any use to friends, family or a charity organisation then your options become much more limited.

Apparently Dell have a recycling program www.dell.com.au/recycle but it will cost you $36 for them to take away one case + monitor.

Living in Brisbane I called the brisbane council and they informed me that for $7 I could take stuff to the tip but the fate of the equipment is then the same as simply putting it in your wheelie bin. Not really what I was after.

I did find a company called Sims Metal www.sims-group.com/au who have a recycling plant in Rocklea that will take the cases (but not the monitors).

If anyone knows any way to recycle old monitors/tvs please let me know.

Sims are good, I get paid $70 per ton for stripped computer cases. That's what they pay for steel here in Sydney.

To give you an idea, 1 ton = 3 pallets = approx 250 cases minus all internals except PSU and floppy.

NSW - WOLLONGONG
**********************

Computerbank Illawarra has just started up. Obviously located in the wollongong region. I'm helping out the guy that runs the show, and as he is very busy, I get to do alot of admin stuff.

Computerbank Illawarra is a not for profit organisation, and we do not sell refurbished computers. All computers are given away, but are only given to those that meet the criteria. Example being a low income family that has a child going to school/high school and needs a computer, but currently unable to afford one.

That out of the way, what i'm currently looking for is somewhere that will take old busted parts that no longer work. I did look at pcrecyclers.com, but was wondering if there is someone much cheaper.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

If anyone has any PC's to donate in the eastern region of Melbourne, i.e Whitehorse and Knox City area's there is a welfare agency that desperatley needs some better quality PC's.

Like all welfare agencies they never have money to upgrade and the old pc's are terrible.

They do alot of great work with young people, (supported accomodation, finding jobs for young kids, families in need etc) and the community. Any help would be a great benifit and will help get the people in need..

WHIM me if you can be any help, then I will forawrd u the details and i'll put you in touch with the team leaders.

I have a small collection of old PC's ranging from a 386dx-20 to P3-500 that I need to dispose of in Adelaide. All equipment is in excellent condition and working perfectly. It seems most of the places collecting donations are only interested in P2 and above machines, so I need to find somewhere that will take the older stuff. Does anyone have any suggestions?

If anyone is still following this thread, we handle macs as well as PCs and a variety of other systems, or may be able to divert your stuff on a case-by-case basis (no pun intended). We are interested more in re-use, with current recycling methods as a less attractive option. Please check our FAQ before bringing down your trailerload of XTs though, we don't have much space. We're in Brisbane. www.ecogeek.com.au
Mac owners may also have some luck with a local user group, I know some members here were supplying gear to TADQ www.technicalaidqld.org.au, as well as South Pacific church groups.

I've dealt with several people in mebourne from freecycle, mostly they are useless lazy people. Many are quick to reply with "its mine mine all mine" but vanish when you ask when they are picking it up.

I tried to give away a pile of stuff over a month or so, even with a list of 5 people who wanted the p200 machine I had (minus case) NO ONE was willing to actually show up to collect it.

The same for several items of furniture I had to give away also, it all ended up on the curb and I ended up with a sore back.

0 out of 10 from me, avoid.

As always, Tasmania seems to have no computer recycling place which is a bugger. When they do advertise 2nd hand computers for sale they are usually too expensive.

I came to Melbourne (relly paid) and, while i was there called in to Computerbank (Vic), excellent place, they were very kind, even carried the monitor out to the car for me. (I bought a 17" monitor for $20.00).
Now i would like to have a box to plug it in. Nothing flash just something that will run Windows98 or a light Linux. The only things i do are email, browse, write, fiddle with family pics and genealogy.

If anyone can help then please whim me.

My workplace has around a sixteen 15" CRT monitors which we need to get rid of ASAP. Models include Samsung 500b, 510s, Viewsonic E53.

If you want a free monitor and can travel to Greenhill road in South Australia then send an e-mail to monitor@business-sa.com for more details.

Hi there,
I'm up in Penguin Tassie & have just bought a new computer. My old box, keyboard & mouse plus Windows 95, Windows 98 Upgrade & Lotus software is up for grabs. It's a Celeron, Pentium 1 equivalent (not sure of Hz, maybe 566?), with 184MGB RAM & 7G HD. It has USB ports, 56K modem, floppy drive & CD ROM.... I've reformatted it but haven't reloaded the software. Let me know if you're interested & want more info. It'd be a shame to just dump it at the tip if someone could use it.
Cheers,
Julie-Anne

We/ my work, just dumped 22 Wyss terminals, I think thats what they're called, 22 keboards and about 5 or 6 servers! I tried to get them to donate them but a big company like them couldn't be bothered so all of them were thrown into a compactor.

Yeh well I pleaded with them to donate them but they weren't interested. To get an idea of the size of the box SOME of it was put into, it was approx 5ft high and a standard pallet deep and wide, which it was sitting on, about 4ft i think they are. Full of old pc's.
I have to say though I had enjoyment really of smashing the screens with a crow bar and listening to the compactor crush the rest as I had to work with them for the last 13 years.

I am in Melbourne and am the mother of a 10 year old boy with Autism(ASD). I am trying a source PC's for my son and seeing I've tried everywhere else I thought I might as well try here. Like most kids with ASD a pc is their lifeline, they prefer working with PC's because they get a predicted response (usually!)We (because of his disability) are one of the potential end users of refurbished pc 's.

I am trying to get hold of a 2 PC's (preferably PIII or IV's) that no-one no longer wants. My son is interested (come obsessed with animation) and we want to be able to set him up properly. One is for him and one is for his 12 year old sister who has to live/put up with his condition and so I don't have to be the umpire.

Earlier comments about the pc recyclers in Melb are sadly true. I was referred to them as the answer only to find that it would probably cost me as much if not a little bit more than what is offered retail to upgrade the Hardware offered to run decent animation software/connect to bigpond (with support) and just use latest MSN messenger. We know we are probably up for the cost of 2 XP OS discs, animation software, some hard disc storage and any networking we choose to set up, but the bottom line is that the disability pc services are unable to help us out on this one.

Is there anyone out there able to help?

I have purchased a couple of second hand dells (PIII 1ghz) from www.metropc.com.au based in Elizabeth St in Melbourne and been very happy.

They offer a limited warranty 3 months from memory.

Downside, no keyboard, mouse, monitor (although they do sell them), usually low memory (128mb - 256mb) and usually it is sdram so its getting costly to buy and in most cases no Windows!

They dont have all the second hand ones on their website, best to drop in, if you can!

Good Luck

I used to do a lot of building PCs from second hand bits that I acquired (mostly for free) from anywhere and everywhere.

These days, computers are so cheap, that I don't think it is worth paying for anything second hand, unless you can get an entire working computer for under about $200.

I also don't think it is worth paying a lot of money for the latest greatest technology. Anything new with a P4 or Athlon is pretty fast. If you are wanting to do graphics work (you mention animation), then avoid on board video - even a moderately priced video card with 128MB of memory is far better than anything on a motherboard. On board NIC - great. On board sound - your call - I've seen some OK ones and some really bad ones. You can always add a sound card later if you are not happy.

You are interested in graphics ... get at least 500MB RAM - 1GB if you can afford it.

You mention disk space. Not sure what others think, but I'd be inclined to get a large internal SATA hard disk rather than an external one - would be much faster. The main advantage of an external drive is being able move it from computer to computer.

Thanks everyone for your advice. JC I thought I'd explain what we have now and what I think is the most cost - efficient way to go. Pls feel free to advise if my thinking is flawed.

Currently our house has one PC; P4 2.4 gb 80HDD Win XP with subsequently upgraded 1gb of ram, NVidia6800 graphics and DVD and DVD burner.

I am looking to acquire a second pc and eventually a 3rd that will allow my son to do his animation thing: min sys req 1.8 512mb 10gb HDD so a P4 looks like the go. We also want to use it so my kids can access the internet simutaneously (and avoid the squabbles you are no doubt familiar with!). Hence my line of enquiry re routers.

Patrick's animation mentor has advised that ideally we will need about a 100gb of HDD and so I have been looking at external HDD's (of the networked mirra kind) as my kids are not the gentlest on hardware.

Rather than having 2 souped up PC's I'm happy for the kids to move between the 2 if/when good graphics, DVD writing etc are needed.

I think I get a P4 XP included (only 20 gb HDD) around the $200-300 mark that fits the minimum animation software requirements.- thanks Jimbo for your advice.

Then hopefully a decent router and External (Network) HDD will fit the bill.

Am I way off-course????
