Hi all!

Here's a list I've compiled of what ports(default) you should forward if you plan on using any of the following p2p apps. If you have no idea how to forward ports, below is a little list of common modem/router manufactures.

---------------------------------- ----------------------

List of common manufactures' port forwarding guides

Billion Under the FAQs, both by SHoNKY from the AUSADSL forums
D-Link
Dynalink
NetComm
Netgear

HUGE LIST OF PORT FORWARDING GUIDES
here

---------------------------------- ----------------------

Default ports values for internet services and setup

BitTorrent
Official client, Azureus, BitComet, BitTornado
The default ports are TCP 6881 - 6999. However, new clients such as Azureus and BitComet only need one port forwarded to work. This might help people whose modem/router does not support forwarding of port ranges.

Added Note: NAT error usually occur when the port is not forwarded to the correct IP address. To solve this, go the Start -> Run -> type cmd then ipconfig. Take note of the the IP address and make sure it is the same as in the port forwarding table.

Direct Connect:
DC++, NeoModus
If you are using the DC++ client, go to Settings -> General. Choose Active and put in your IP address and any unused port value. For example if you put in 6666, forward port 6666 in router/modem. If your IP is dynamic then you have to update the IP field when it changes. See below for users with dynamic IP addresses.

eMule/eDonkey2000/Overnet:
eMule, eMule Plus, eDonkey2000/Overnet
Values are found in Preferences -> Connection. Defaults are TCP 4662 & UDP 4672.

FTP:
Clients : BulletProof FTP Client, CuteFTP
Servers : BulletProof FTP Server, Serv-U
Forward ports TCP 20 & TCP 21. This is only necessary if you want to set up a server. You may also want to consider a Dynamic DNS if you have a dynamic IP address. Look below for details.

irc:
mIRC, XChat
Usually most fserves serve on port TCP 59, so forward it. On some occasions, they might serve on a different port. For example it might say /dccserver +s on 212. So if you want to access it, you forward port 212. But most of the time it's on 59.

WinMX:
Port values found under 'Internet connections' in Settings, TCP 6699 & UDP 6257.

Piolet: UDP 41170.
Shareaza : UDP & UDP 6346.
Soulseek: TCP 2234 & TCP 5534

---------------------------------- ----------------------

Fix for users with a dynamic IP

So your IP changes, not a problem! Here's how to get around it. Apply for a Dynamic DNS at www.dyndns.org. What this does is allows you to alias a dynamic IP address (e.g. 203.x.x.x) to a static hostname (e.g. test.an-example.net). You must update the settings at dyndns.org when your IP changes for this to work. Luckily there are plenty of dyndns clients which automatically updates the settings when your IP changes. Some modems/routers (e.g. Netgear DG-814) have a feature in the settings which allow automatic updates to dyndns.org as well.

---------------------------------- ----------------------

Well that's about it for now... I hope I made your p2p experience more enjoyable. Updates will come when I'm not swamped with work.

Have fun!

Su.

If you have several people on your network wanting to use Bittorrent, just divide up and forward the ports. For example :
Person A ports 6881 - 6885
Person B ports 6886 - 6890

5 ports per person, that means you can download 5 files at one go.

It would help better if the ports listed are actually specified if it is TCP or UDP, most likely its TCP, but sometimes you never know.

any suggestions on what i should or should not be doing?
or do i have to turn off DHCP [Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol] and assign static ip

how do i do this?

i am also NAT'ed by my adsl modem.

generally speaking the mIRC protocol states that for a dcc transfer to take place a control connection is set up via the server which then initiates the transfer. This further means that the party "sending" the file has to be able to accept incoming connections therefore the party accepting the file must only be able to make outbound connections

so NAT-ing has nothing to do with transfers timing out.

given these, however this is what i have been experiencing: SOME XDCC bots somehow make it so that you are the one that has to be able to accept connections...

i personally cannot resume files via mIRC from home, although i can from work even though both connections are firewalled. expanding on this, NAT-ed people cannot resume.

anyone care to say otherwise? please do.. i am desperate for resuming...

Hope this helps...

p.s.: you only need to forward ports if you are hosting a FServe

That's is quite weird.... I don't know if this might solve your problem, but if you are using mIRC, go to the Options->DCC->Options and set the DCC ports. For example first 1041 and last 1045 and then forward them on your router/modem. Just remember some fserves don't allow resuming downloads.

I'm also behind a NAT, and have never had any troubles with resuming.

p.s.: you only need to forward ports if you are hosting a FServe

Although this is true most of the time, some fserves are behind a router serving on port 59. So the only way to access them is to have port 59 forwarded.

I'm using a DSL 504 router and, unfortunately, this is not mentioned in the list of routers. I've already forwarded my ports but am not sure if I can change the firewall to allow bittorrent through. For example, there is no "WAN" mentioned in the configuration.
Does anyone have a 504 and can help with this?

I am using a d-link 504 router. I was using Bit Torrrent and had forwarded ports 6881-6999 and d/l no trouble. I didn't touch the firewall section.
For a change I am now using ABC and closed the BT ports and forwarded 10 ABC ports within the required range and am having no trouble again. Again I didn't touch the firewall.
Hope this helps

Thanks, Peepo.

Your experiences with Dlink sound very similar to mine. However, it's the pathetic speeds I'm getting at times that are frustrating. What sort of d/load speeds do you get? I realise the server is a big part of this and where they are. What really gripes my cookies is when some people are bragging about how they get speeds of over 200kb's per second. Grrrrrrrrrr If I make in the 30's it's a miracle :>)

Hi ballman,
Been trying to port forward with the DSL500 also. Think i succeeded. Am getting green smiley led's in the bit torrent clients. Do this:
In internet explorer address window type: 192.168.0.1
Login, with username: admin, password: admin.
Select Configuration at top left.
Select Port Redirection.
Select Add.
In Comment type a name eg. "torrent1"
In Internet Port enter 6881 (standard for bit torrents)
Enter the same number in Local Port.
Select TCP for Protocol.
In local computer enter 192.168.0.2 (Note the .2)
Select OK.
Select CONTINUE AND SAVE CHANGES LATER
I believe (only new to this stuff so could b wrong) that most bit torrent clients like to have 10 or so ports. So, repeat the above steps, changing the port each time by +1. eg. 6882,6883 etc until you reach 6890. (If anything i say is crap, someone please correct me)
Once you have added all the ports, select SAVE CHANGES AND REBOOT.
Hope this works.

Anyone have any idea how to solve this problem??

I'm currently using Shareaza but wanna get into the DC++ scene... I've been trying to download ofF other users in both Shareaza and DC++ but very seldom get someone to download off! Is this because I haven't forwarded the right ports or is it because there is nobody out there willing to share their files with me??

Please, somebody help!!! and provide me with some assistance here with PORT FORWARDING USING A BILLION 5100w!!!!!

I would like to know how to forward a whole range of ports on NB1300+4. For example 6888-6999. On the config menu if i enter 6888-6999 or 6888 - 6999 it rejects it. Otehrwise i have to enter each port individually which will take a few weeks.

It seems that your modem does not allow port forwarding ranges. However, newer BitTorret clients such as Azureus and BitComet only require 1 port to be forwarded to function properly. So I suggest you grab one of them and give them a go. That way you only need to forward 1 port and not the range. Hope this helps.

The Dlink DSL 200 isnt a router, so therefore there is no port forwarding involved. If your having problems then its got to be your (software) firewall.

Would be worth adding to the BT section not to use a port between 6881 and 6889 as many ISPs in Europe and the US are blocking/shaping ports in this range.

This also might have something to do with the NAT error reported in Azureus above.

Billion 5100W Port Forwarding instructions:
Your modem will have an ip address. If you're not sure what it is, either check your manual or else contact your support. You should probably bookmark it for easy access should you have any problems.
Try this next link but read the details very carefully. You'll need to set up a static ip first (although I believe there is a way around that.) www.portforward.com/bill...rtforwarding.htm Enter the port your p2p app uses. eg: if it is 6346 then that's the port no. you should open.
You can only use one port per computer. So any others that use the same app will need to have a different port opened for them. And they'd need to have that no. entered within their app as a port no. Depending on the app, all of these will also need to force IP. You can find that in the advanced section of your app (if it has that ability.)

By the way, anybody else who wishes to do Port Forwarding, follow the concept above about creating a static ip (instructions are also at the following website.) Or use Su's suggestion which I would have included if Su hadn't. And then go here to find the most common modems & routers that use NAT technology: www.portforward.com/routers.htm & find your particular model. Descriptions are very good. However if you use a mac the windows may appear a little different but the principle remains the same. The same applies if you use an updated version of the modem software. By the way anybody who uses Limew' happy to help you out if you visit the Gnutella forum. We also have firewall instructions there. www.gnutellaforums.com/index.php?s= But please read the forum rules www.gnutellaforums.com/a...hp?s=&forumid=29 & search your topic beforehand if you wish to post any questions. Best regards Lotr.

HEY EVERYBODY, READ THE BEGINNING OF THIS THREAD ON PAGE 1 & YOU'LL SEE LINKS TO HOW TO PORT FORWARD YOUR MODEM/ROUTER. OR SEE THIS POST!

This shows how little you know. D-Link modems need NAT Rules (port forwarding). There is a section for the D-Link DSL-302G here:

azureus.aelitis.com/wiki...terConfiguration

Or here is the info:

*The D-Link 302G ADSL Modem*
*Simply go into the modem configuration page found at* 10.1.1.1
*Click on the WAN folder on the left hand side and then find the NAT page*
*Click on the ADD button to add a new rule*
*Leave the rule flavour as is*
*Put the next chronological number in the Rule ID* (number 2 if this is the first rule you have added)
*Leave IF Name and Protocol as is*
*In the "local address from" type the address 10.1.1.3*
*In the "local address to" type in the address 10.1.1.34* (This is because the modem auto assigns computers on the network a number within this range and its best to cover all bases I have found ;) )
*In the "global address from" put your local ip address*
*If you have a static IP address you put the same number in both the global address entries*
*If, like me, you have a changing IP then work out what your ISP assigns you.* You can do this using the "Auto-discover external IP address..." wizard, which can be found in View>Configuration>Tracker.
*Your ISP will usually assign you a address within a certain range, and then you can put the lowest in the "from" box and the highest in the "to" box*
Once you have done that in the from box *Put the port number you wish to start with (6881) and in the to entry the ending number (6999)* _*Please also see PortIsBlacklisted for more important information about this now.*_
*Leave local port, click the SUBMIT button*

Does anyone know how to foward ports with the optus version of the dsl-302g without flashing it. I would flash it but know many people who have fried there modem doing it.

If this cannot be done does anyone know of a way to use the dsl-302g as the modem and the dsl-504 as a router as i have a dsl-504 but the modem blew in a storm recently (hence why the ports need to be redirected on the modem optus sent us).

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated

Can a bit in the guide be added to recommend using ports different than 6881-6885 to 9.

some ISP's overseas are shaping those ports, so people will get faster speeds and the bit torrent harder to banwidth strangle the sooner most people leave the old ports behind. especially with clients like azureas which only needs 1 port.

Hi, this topic would certainly seem well and truly covered, what with the link to portforward.com, but my failure to get this to work on my RTA100+ has led me to a few questions.

1. Can you simply disable NAT on the RTA100+? Why do I need routing capabilities, when this modem/router simply services one computer? Then wouldn't the whole issue be avoided?

2. I've got my Dynamic DNS to compensate for my dynamic IP, now what? I don't see, from the portforward guide, what it has to do with anything, as I haven't entered my new DNS in any fields.

3. My local IP, despite existing at the whim of DHCP, doesn't change - only the router's external IP. I suspect this must be the same for others using this model. So why do I need a 'static' IP, when the only IP that needs to be satisfied is the IP of the comp whose port is being forwarded to, i.e. the sole local IP?

Anyway, the long and the short of it is, I can't port forward this darn thing. If anyone has succeeded in port forwarding for an RTA100+, could you please elaborate, because the resources previously listed by Su aren't answering all the q's for newbies like me :)

Regards,

funkpack

Oops, sure enough as I posted my cry of despair over not being able to get Port Forwarding to work on the RTA100+, I discovered my frustration was the result of a certain parameter that I had changed - under the 'services' tab in the config, IP filter, Private default action to "accept" - needing to be 'submitted' on that page before the save and reboot (see the thread Forums>DSL Hardware>DYNALINK RTA100+ Port Forward).

So, I look silly, but one of the observations I made is true - on this particular model of router, even though it has a range of local IPs it can assign, it can only really "route" to one computer at a time - hence, it tends to dole out the same IP address when you connect in the same way, in my case, Ethernet.

A 'static IP', it would seem, doesn't need to be applied for, as the Local IP in the new NAT rules you make doesn't change each time you reboot. The external IP of the router does, of course, when configured with DHCP.

Do I keep these IP addresses the same? I think my router gets an IP in this range and then forwards on to 192.168.0.XXX for compters on network. So do I forward to 10.1.1.xx or to 192.168.0.XXX?

scotty writes...
*In the "global address from" put your local ip address*

Is this 10.1.1.1? Or the IP address assigned by ISP?

Sorry for all the stupid questions, I am new to this.

I am connected to TPG 1.5 plan, with DSL-302G modem and DI-624+ wireless router. I have followed a guide to setting up account with dyndns tp avoid TPG port 80 transparent proxy issues (not that I know anything about that) and port forwaded on router. Also configured router firewall to let in Azureus port and have no personal firewall running (XP firewall is off). But still get slow downloads, yellow smiley, and sheilds up says the port I am using is in 'Stealth Mode'? Dunno what else to try, port triggering?

I am using windows XP pro at home and windows 2003 server at my work with ADSL connection using DSL-500. I want to be able to access my server from home. I beleive my best option is port forwarding to 3389 (RDP), which I did.

But when I try to access the server from home, there was no success.

Which IP address I would be trying to connect in RDP. In router configuration there are two IP addresses, one is Gatway IP and other is client IP.

Which one I need to use to connect to the server remotely.

TIA.

Does it really matter about having a high ID with edonkey or does it only really matter with emule?

Thanks!

Ps, I have a dynamic internet IP

I have a billion 5100 router and i'm ussing bitcomet a connection of 1.5 with TPG

i've been trying to forward ports from my router but it makes no difference on my speed , dont know if i'm doing it wrong.

what i dont understand is that if i download things from a site that has got a lot of seeder and peers i can go up 170kps without port forwarding so my question is: is it really important to forward a port? what i'm i doing wrong then? because somethimes from certain sites i can only download up to 20kps and when is really bad only at 5kps

ok i tried to forward ports again on the billion 5100 and the weird thisng is that the ports are working because i tested them and the tests come out as success but my speed remains at 20kps

disabled port forwarding and the speed is jumping up and down i've seen it going up to 60kps then down to 10kps ???

dont know what is going on if someone knows please reply

Port Forwarding usually needs the LOCAL IP to be static, NOT the WAN IP.

Turn OFF DHCP if active in the router.

Turn OFF DHCP if active on the PC(s)

Assign a static IP to each PC on your LAN even if only one is to receive forwarded ports.

The router is usually 192.168.0.1 so PC IP's can be in the range 192.168.0.2~255

Use the same subnet mask on each: 255.255.255.255

Use the router's IP as the DNS and the Internet Gateway addresses.

Port forwarding will now work correctly.

I can't establish a primary connection on Winmx (v3.53) with my broadband connection. It says that it's connected and ready to download but when I go to search I get no results. On a secondary connection, I do. It's set on the right ports, 6699 and 6257 otherwise it wouldn't connect. I'm with Ozemail, have winxp professional and a Dynalink RTA100+. Thanks in advance.

You can do this using the "Auto-discover external IP address..." wizard, which can be found in View>Configuration>Tracker.

Or if you're running a dlink-302g you just used your modem assigned ip. e.g 10.1.1.3, and put that in there :)

Works beautifully.
If you're on a 302g, and you used "auto-discover external ip..." ... from what I could see... dyndns and no-ip.. both reported false ip's... so why not just put tracker external ip address as 10.1.1.3 and let ur 302g do the rest :P

You can't forward the same ports on another PC. Just change the listening port of the BT client to a diffenrent value.

e.g
PC1 (192.168.0.2) - use port 7777,
PC2 (192.168.0.3) - use port 7778

I just can't get my head around all this port forwarding info I have a billion 5100 router and I am having trouble with my Voip and have been advised as shown below:

* You're currently using port 10001 (instead of 5060).

I suspect the router doesn't handle the higher ports well. It's common for
router to dynamically changing port in order to stop external hackers. (A
way to protect the internal network).

When the port is translated to the low range, you'll get good quality
audio and when it's in the high range than you'll have problem.

You'll need to ensure the router to leave ports 5060 and 5004 alone so
you'll have good quality audio all the time.*

Where do I go to change these settings in the 5100, do I have to make all my pc have a static ip address as well?

Once again ........... help

cheers Len

Hi ... well I managed to set up with static ip addresses and did the port forwarding thing okay after finding a few settings and how to set it up, I was quite pleased when our 2 computers with xp could browse the net, but my webpages seemed to take a bit of a nosedive, and it did not help as far as my voip connection was concerned, I still can not use freecall not even the automated voice for the echo test, so I put it all back to the way it was and it still is no go for me ........... I am going from bad to worse here and really getting to my witts end ........ except I am feeling more like a half witt............ I am really starting to feel totally inadequate to achieve something that everyone else seems to do with out too many hassles.... help

Hi guys...

I am using D-Link 504g... I opened 6881-6999 port (which is really old)... does it have to be on TCP Protocol? Because on my router, it has an option for TCP only, UDP only and Both... does it still work if I use Both as the protocol or it must be specific only?

Thanks

Alright, something that should be added for the people piggy-backing firewalls - e.g. A firewall/modem and a linux box. Remember to forward the ports on the modem to the EXTERNAL IP address of the linux box. In the year of running bittorrent my modem was pointing to the internal address of my linux box and I was wondering why I was not "connectable".

Does port forwarding solve the problem of ISP port "prioritisation" (namely Veridas)? If so, are there any downsides to this?

no, port fowarding does not solve the problem if the isp prioritises ports.

i am also with a veridas isp and i need to use totally different ports in order to dl with my p2p programs. i use ports in the [priority 1] category.

Hi Guys,

New to this but here goes.

As per the first page, can dyndns.org also specify ports. I'm on Optus Cable and they block port:80 so I would have to run my IIS server on a different port then forward to it.

Can they do that as well???

Cheers

Willo

For anyone who is using ABC version 3.0 if you forward the ports 6881-6999 you'll need to change the default port setting in the ABC client to match the ports you forwarded in the router, do this by clicking 'Action' >>> 'Preferences' >>>> 'Network'
