I can't belive that nobody has mentioned

www.allmusic.com <== this is the site for music. If you wonder about something - you'll find the answer there.

also,

www.musicplasma.com is a great site. It gives you a graphical representation or 'map' of artists that you are likely to enjoy listening to, based on your entering one of your favourite artists. It's a bit bandwith heavy, but it has lead me to discover a couple of good bands.

It's pretty easy to still get in to greypages, they've used a name and password stored in the html, just view source on the page you get if you click cancel at the password login.

fantastic idea for a thread murderous, well done :) and thanks for all people who have contributed / will contribute.

www.ht.com.au - the online shop for harris technology. i use it because it's moderately competitive (not cut-throat) but it's an easy-to-access and relatively comprehensive list of hardware/software available. a good starting point.
I am in no way affiliated with harris technology.
www.winamp.com - a surprisingly wide selection of free streaming media. can also access through winamp player.
I am however a huge fan of winamp :)
www.beyondunreal.com - comprehensive news, free http/ftp downloads, some mods, and wiki on developing the unreal engine.
www.wikipedia.org - the free encyclopedia. great, free resource for all sort of info. contribute! :)
www.a9.com - sophisticated (more complicated/hard to use?) and extended interface for google, plus other more targeted searches.

that's all i can think of right now, will add more if i remember some.
