Hey. Just bought a Billion 7401VGP-M after ordering iiNet Naked. I've managed to get on the internet, and that's all fine. However checking through some pages on this site, i've noticed people are getting much faster speeds – further away from the exchange (amongst other things..).

Since i've always used ISP-standard modems provided, I don't have experience with things like this just yet.
[I'm currently a Junior Technician too, so anything you tell me here would greatly help me in my outer-forum life too. ;P).

What are the settings I should be looking to tweak/change from default to get internet connection speeds faster than 5mbps i'm getting now. I'm barely 3km away from the exchange, and the service just went up about 5 hours ago. I've recently changed the online connection manager to 'Thrillseeker', but it's not been more than 3 hours yet (However, when I did change it, my net -did- go down for a few seconds. Since I was playing with some settings, i'm not sure if it was that or the change taking place?).

All help is appreciated. Thanks greatly.

Sanjo.

Change coding gain from auto to 7 and also make sure you're on ADSL2+ auto fallback

Post your modem stats.

Have you done an isolation_test?
Short phone cable?
All phones/foxtel/alarms filtered?
Change the Coding Gain to 7 on your modem.

I'm currently at work. I'll do all suggestions when I get back in about an hour.

Right now, i'll 'work' and find out what each of these things are and how to go about them. ;]

[Edit] Rushed, sorry.
Right now from memory, I only have 2 computers and my 360 connected and my VOIP phone. I'll remove all later and see.

The telephone cables are extremely short – i'm right next to the socket so I went as short as possible. ;]

I don't use any other phones in the house, and have no Foxtel, etc. However, the Billion is filtered from the socket.

Just so I know, how do I find the stats? Will there be a dedicated place for them in the firmware?

It shouldn't be. Your on naked – You don't need a filter.

You shouldn't filter the modem even if you aren't on naked.
Unless you're filtering the PSTN going into the failback port.

Okay, with everything disconnected bar the line (which isn't filtered anymore. ;] ), then I get;

Upstream; 989200
Downstream; 7583400

I've changed the Coding gain to 7, and on a few website speed tests, it has increased by 1mbps, (Now staying at almost dead on 6mbps.).

Clicking on Advanced Settings;
SNR Margin; 5.5dB Down, 7.5dB Up.
Line Att.; 36.5dB Down, 26.0dB Up.

I'm not sure what SNR and Line Attenuation are, but.. I'll go learn now.

Do you need any more details?

[Edit;] Upon restarting my modem, SNR is now; 6.0/8.5 – Line Att is now; 39.0/26.0

What firmware is it?

Why I ask is that my 7404VGPM lost about a good 2Mbit using the 5.60c firmware reverting back to 5.52h1 made a huge difference in sync speed.

Try rolling back a few firmwares if you have a newer one, that could help you in some aspect.

Post the stats that is on the ADSL parameters page , like Connect Mode ... Modulation ... etc

You should have ADSL2+ , auto-fallback for Connect Mode and Gdmt.BisPlusAuto for Modulation.

Your line attenuation is a bit high , how far are you away from the telephone exchange ?

I am still running the original 5.52e with my 7404-VGPM and I have not had any problems with it and it is very stable.

I guess i'll try that later. I'd rather not, but it's worth a shot I guess.
I prefer being up to date with as much stuff as I can, but with the new nVidia drivers not working too well with SmartDoctor, I figure this might be one of them times too.

I'll give it a shot later tonight. Any other ideas whilst i'm here?

For distance; The Mullaloo exchange, (Coral Street, Marmion Av.) to Buchanan Way, Padbury. I believe it's about 2~3km.

Your stats look OK and everythig looks normal.
Are you using PPPoE or PPPoA ? , whatever you are using , try the other one .

PPPOE.
I read PPPOA isn't too smart with iiNet? Will check later.

PPPoE or PPPoA will not affect sync speed. Sync is higher up in the OSI model then PPP.

Hey guys.

I've followed through what people have suggested, and I have a fairly good idea about what affects speeds of the net.

Is there anything else I should look at changing to get the most out of my modem? Right now i'm still hovering around 7mbps. It's not been higher from what I can remember, but playing with the config definately yields results.
Again, all your help has been awesome, but anything else is very much appreciated.

Just a quick [newby] question. I remember being told that modems take a 'while to find a good pathway' to your ISP. Is this true (i.e; 'keep the modem on for ages = eventual faster speed'), or is it total poop?

It will actually go down rather that up :)

:O

Care to explain why? That's interesting. ;[

(Is it sad that checking for replies to this has been the highlight of these past two days? :P)

[Edit;] In the settings, if I can remember well theres 'Profile Type' or something, where MAIN and TELSTRA are some options. I only recognize two or three, but do these affect much?

Your line attenuation of 36.5 shows that the theoretical sync speed for your line should be in the range of 11956.5k/bits – 13285 k/bits

adsl calculator

All your modem settings look alright , so it may be the new 5.60c. firmware.

Hi vSanjo....

Can you log into your iiNet toolbox and see what profile your on and change that to THRILLSEEKER, your SNR suggests you may already be on that profile anyway.
Another thing you can check, is make sure your modem is connected to the first phone connection to the house. If not, give it a try and see if that makes any difference.

Cheers
Pete H

It is the 5.60c firmware, the OP was told to revert back to 5.52h1.. he doesn't listen.

Hold on, I hadn't even got home and i'm told I wasn't listening.

I'll try the other firmware in a while. Since everything is in lockdown at home, there's not really a way I could change socket without extensive moving of like..my whole front-room.

@Pirate Steve; i'll change my firmware shortly.
@Pete H; My setting is on Thrillseeker, ;D. Again, can't really connect to other line. Also left it on MAIN.
@onlsd; Give me a break. I was at work. ;[

[Edit] Changing the firmware as mentioned looks risky. ;-;
I'll do it tonight when everyone's asleep, I guess.

Make sure you reset settings to factory after reverting to 5.52h1.
