can someone pls confirm if this is the correct steps for unlocking iphone:

1. request unlock to carrier
2. receive confirmation of unlock
3. itunes restore with original sim inserted
4. insert new sim, which should work

I have read some places that you need to restore with the new sim and if you restore with the original sim you will relock the phone. Is this correct? If so, how do you restore with the new sim because itunes will simply say that the sim is invalid, since the phone still thinks it is locked.

i'm confused.

I did a restore with the sim I got with the phone. I then tried a Telstra one and it worked.

I have just recently applied for my unlock via Optus. The Optus guy said to restore with the original (Optus) SIM, then use another SIM to unlock.

it seems to me that during the restore process the phone is told that it is unlocked. so then any sim may be inserted.

anyone know if it is possilbe to inadvertently re-lock an unlocked phone?

You're still locked to the same carrier, so no unlocking (for a different carrier) required.

I'm new here, please be nice

My Situation is this:
I got the the prepaid Optus 16G 3G iphone, did the set up account, made a call, did the 80$ on the prepaid, requested unlock from optus got an SMS to say it was unlocked.
Did an itunes restore and inserted my NZ sim which according to Vodafone NZ was compatiable with iphones.

Result = get no service on iphone and message in itunes that SIM is not recognised in itunes (need to contact carrier etc). I do note on itunes there is still a little lock icon on the top of the screen. If I put the optus card back in then phone and itunes are happy.

Question: where is the process going wrong. Do I need to ask Optus to attempt to reunlock the phone?

Would really appreciate some advice or suggestions. As to use the Optus card while in NZ is just to expensive option.

hey guys, i rang optus on monday the 1st december asking them unlock the 2 iphones on the account. iphone support did it and said it would be round 5 days, max 10. However, I head off OS on the 15th and need to use a local sim while I'm there. Based on others experiences, is it worth ringing optus up to get a status on the unlock or just wait? I just don't want to get to the 10th/11th and then be told it needs another 10 days!!

I wouldn't bother. Id be very surprised if you didn't receive the txt by Friday 12th, and if not i would try the restore on the Friday anyway. If you actually talked to Optus' iphone support guys that's good cause they know what's goin on.....you could actually try them on the Friday and explain the situation, and if they're feeling generous they'll push it through that day (they can certainly get the unlock through within a few hours if they want).
