I'm LAN connected right now, on the Livenet ADSL 2 service from AAPT experiencing slow speeds. I was upgraded 2 weeks ago to this service, and have bare

I rang AAPT tonight. and went through an isolation test, did their speed test and also restored the modem/router to defaults. However, the speed has only slightly improved to the below.

Test run on 29/10/2008 @ 11:59 PM

Mirror: AAPT
Data: 9 MB
Test Time: 43.04 secs

Your line speed is 1.76 Mbps (1756 kbps).
Your download speed is 220 KB/s (0.21 MB/s).

Test run on 30/10/2008 @ 12:44 AM

Mirror: AAPT
Data: 9 MB
Test Time: 38.38 secs

Your line speed is 1.97 Mbps (1969 kbps).
Your download speed is 246 KB/s (0.24 MB/s).

A far cry from the ballpark I should be in. Any further thoughts?

Download www2.aapt.com.au/speedtest.bin – maybe download multiple copies at the same time and add up the speed you get.

What are you synced at?

Done that and getting very similar speeds.

Synching at the right speed and have checked this at AAPT's end as well.

That speed looks appealing next to what I'm getting at the moment.

Mirror: AAPT
Data: 9 MB
Test Time: 86.56 secs

[(Your line speed is 873 kbps (0.87 Mbps).
Your download speed is 109 KB/s (0.11 MB/s).

When I call AAPT the reps just say that's within the acceptable range.

I just tried another mirror & got a better set of readings but still way lower than it should be.

Mirror: OptusNet
Data: 9 MB
Test Time: 59.75 secs

Your line speed is 1.27 Mbps (1265 kbps).
Your download speed is 158 KB/s (0.15 MB/s).

With ADSL2+ theres no guarantee you will get the full speed as per said in your package. Thats why they say UPTO 20MBPS.

~ The actual speed you receive on your internet service can vary from the maximum stated speed in your chosen internet plan. More than 65% of AAPT LiveNet customers experience speeds between 8Mbps and 20Mbps. I've been getting this exact same effect. I live in the greater Wollongong area (in Coniston), less than 2 km from the exchange. In theory, we should be able to achieve a sync. speed up to 16 Mbps. The lines are a little bit noisy, so the modem typically syncs at around 8 Mbps.

However, the actual data transfer rate is extremely low. Like, anywhere between ~60 kbps (note: not shaped, this is two days after quota restored) and 1 Mbps during typical usage periods.

Question: Have you tried checking your speeds at different times of day?

You see, my theory is that since AAPT started pushing people off old, now unsupported plans (like the now defunct 512k ADSL 12 GB/month plan that I was on) and onto ADSL 2+, they've got a sudden upturn in users on ADSL2+ and don't have the resources in all areas to handle the sudden enormous jump in bandwidth requirements. Hence, it's particularly noticeable that you don't achieve anywhere near line sync speed throughout the day and into the evening, during typical high usage periods. In the morning, when internet traffic dies down a bit, speeds are noticeably higher. It would also explain why when we first switched over the speeds were consistently high (at or around line sync speed), but ever since, as more usres are switched over to ADSL 2+ they've been getting steadily worse.

It pisses me off that this situation has been allowed to manifest (screams bad management and poor infrastructure planning), but worse is the fact that there seems to be no way of reporting the situation through AAPT's service line. I reported the fault two weeks ago, had the fault upgraded after subsequent phone calls, and haven't heard back from them since.

Don't worry, you're not the only one in this situation. One of my coworkers is having exactly the same problem as me at the moment, so I know it's not isolated.

C'mon AAPT, fix up your act!

I'm having a similar problem. Only mine seems a touch weirder. When I perform a speed test, I get a very decent 13-14mb.. When I'm downloading something however, I only get a absolute maximum of 90kbps. I used to get upwards and over 200kbs and I have no idea whats changed. I've tried every possible configuration of my modem and router and nothing gets me the kind of speed that the speed test indicates.

I'm at a loss.

Dude I'm the same as you, I was getting roughly 6mb on speedtest.net but whenever I downloaded I got speeds just over 4kb/s, had to plug the Foxtel in so I can just get roughly 40kb/s. Had enouhg of this shit and churned to Amnet, sick of AAPT screwing me around.

Maybe try a download manager that can support multiple connections. As you won't see full speeds overseas on a single connection on a file at all.

Add another one to the list.

"Upgraded" (hahahaha) from the 512kbps/12GB plan, where using speedtest.net used to show ping of 130, D/L approx 450kbps, U/L approx 100kbps, and it would show this consistanly day and night. Now on the 20Mbps/5GB plan, during the day I get 78 ping, D/L 4Mbps, U/L 500kbps, but as soon as the sun goes down, it drops to 78 ping, D/L 100kbps, U/L 500kbps.

Now I know 20Mbps is theooretical maximum and not gaurenteed, but I would atleast like it to be better than dial up!!!

Thankfully I paid the $75 connection and opted for no contract, because I wont be staying at dial up speeds for long.

I dont have all night to wait for it to download!! That example you quoted is a so called "fast" connection example for me (at a line speed of 1.5 hahaha).

I did try the 3MB file last night and got the same speed. The connection is so slow that it even makes just trying to post the results on WP v/painfu (and I am patient, I am still used to ADSL1 speeds), I forgot to copy the results from the 3MB download and wasn't going to download it again, so I downloaded the 600kb file.

If it is taking 49 secs to download 600kb, that would be almost 5 mins to dowonload the 3MB file!!!

Have you guys bothered calling AAPT, they dont provide official support in this forum. It has been well documented. Use the AAPT Speedtest -www2.aapt.com.au/speedtest.bin. If you are getting below 1500kbps or around 150KB/s on this test, then print screen it 30 seconds in and save it a file. Call AAPT and lodge a fault with them. Make sure you are running the modem in complete isolation and only 1 wired connection to the modem. Meaning 1 computer.

What modem are you using? Is it an AAPT supplied modem. Did you get a new modem when you upgraded, still have the old one or do you have your own?

EDIT: Link might work.

I see it as evidence gathering. If I was to have a slow internet connection for a couple of nights, and then ring AAPT to lodge a complaint, then I would get the royal run-around, try this , reset that, if that doesn't work come back in three weeks as it must be your hardware etc etc...

By discussing it on WP first, I can see that it isn't a hardware problem of mine. As a result, after lodging my complaint with AAPT I wont go through the run-around, I will tell them they need to improve their hardware at the local exchange as it gets overloaded at peak times, and if they dont I will churn. Thankfully took the $75 no contract option.

Well, if the last few days are anything to go by, it appears AAPT have taken me off their ADSL2 hardware at the exchange (which was good during the day and bad at night), and put me back on Telstra's ADSL hardware at the exchange (which is just average all the time), but rather than the 512kbps speed plan I was on before, I seem to be on the the 1.5Mbps plan equivalent settings. Every speed test I have done over the last few days and nights has come it at a line speed of between 1.44 and 1.55 Mbps, with download speeds of approx 0.2MB/s.

Will leave it a few more days before logging the complaint, obviously as it has been stated before, if I keep getting 200kbps download speeds they are just going to say to bad so sad that is with in our limits.
