I would like to find out if there is a way of turning off the start-up message "You're Turning Me On."
I have an uncomfortable feeling about having such a double-meaning and suggestive phrase come on the screen every time it is switched on.
I couldn't find this as an option.
Maybe it could be adjusted in the next firmware revision?

No prob Jamann

Just call your friendly support team at VBB@H and describe your uncomfortableness in lucid terms.

Then wait forever for a reasonable response.

If that is all you have to complain about, you are in the wrong forum.

The guys in here are ready to kill for a better service from Virgin and you take exception to their absolutely awful messages of reassurance!

Get a life mate. We all realised many dollars ago that Virgin is definitely not a turn on!

No thanks. When I see that message (I guess what, once every three months when I accidentally knock out the power cord?) it reminds me that the world is sometimes a little too serious and the odd double entendre keeps us alive.

I have an uncomfortable feeling

We're talking about a company brand that's "Virgin". Perhaps you'd be better to steer clear of an entire company brand that has a double meaning.

Virgin is obviously not the company for you.
I think you should head over to Telstra. They will happily take your money and call you "sir"

A simple question was asked and you find it worthwhile to make a remark like that,

Come on, it was just a question....

Despite all the problems and frustrations that we experience, I don't think we should take it out on the OP.
The OP has just asked a simple question and it deserves a simple answer.

Unless you can get the source code to reprogram the firmware then the code can't be changed so it a matter of asking Virgin support for this change but I seriously don't like your chances.

I agree with Toongy. The OP asked a reasonable question. He/She is not comfortable with the message – its that person's value system and we have no reason to attack them for that. It's also sort of normal to want to personalise that sort of thing anyway, so might be anice feature – you can do it on your Nokia mobile.

From my perspective, the "You're turning me on" message has sometimes been very annoying when things have not been working and I would have loved to be able to change it to "I'm trying, I'm really trying" another double entrede.

Nice to hear some other opinions. Thanks for the humour, Skiffie. You win!

Just remember that a cantenna offers the least dB increase, but can help improve signal strength (good bang for buck). You also need to know where the local towers are, and which has the best signal, and point in that direction first. If that tower goes down for any reason, you'll need to swing around to the other tower (if applicable).

My advice though, if you have marginal signal strength then don't persist. It would appear that in peak times, those with the weakest strength will be first kicked. Note this is an unconfirmed theory!

Actually that is a confirmed theory. If the cell is overloaded, then it "breaths". It does this by reducing its signal power. The theory is that this will make those mobiles furthest away connect to another less congested tower. The problem with this theory is that when all towers are congested...

This stuff was well explained by someone back in August/September 2007 on one of these threads.

EDIT: By the way, I agree with Skiffie. If you're marginal now, it can be very difficult to make things work. I did it with a high gain antenna, but thats an expensive option and given the unreliability of the system, a waste of money if you have any other alternatives.

Must be his first time with Virgin. They have a few jokes like that, like the mobile sim card (pull me out, push me in, turn me on)

If he was really uncomfortable he wouldnt be joining a company called VIRGIN now would he? (knowing that the name Virgin itself could be a "double-meaning and suggestive phrase")

Okey, this whole thread is silly. C'mon, Virgin have always maintained that they are 'cheeky' in the way they advertise, hence the product has to have a 'cheeky' aspect to it.

I just don't think my BB@H would be the same without it, might as well get Telstra.

OP If you're uncomfortable with the message, put a post-it-note over the screen :)

Or instead of complaining you could email with your wishes to be able to change it.

Virgin have never picked on me and none of my friends when it comes to mobiles. just stop complaining about how virgin have picked on you. if a little kid picks on you are you going to tell everyone on whirlpool, no.

get over it. give the product a chance and life life a little bit better.

I cannot believe so many people picking on virgin just any other company not telco or brand if its new and you jump on board everything is not going to go 100% give the product some time and have faith in it and it will work out the guys at virgin are always testing up finding new ways to improve things eg the firmware to improve how it connects is one of the many ways they are helpful

aussield89, if you had followed this thread, then you would have known that my reference to being "picked on by the virgin" was part of a frivolous exchange. Can't believe that someone who quotes on ethics would take my reference out of context without checking the rest of the thread.

As for your other comments about giving Virgin a fair go. I've been with Virgin from near the beginning of the VB@H release and for most of my 13 months I was positive and patient. If you were to follow my postings from say Sep 07, you would see this. My negative response evolved when problems were ignored by Virgin, when my non-aggressive emails were not replied to, and most significantly when I continously read of shocking responses from Virgin such as charging someones card $1024 for modems which Virgin should have known – if their tracking systems were working – had been returned. And, regardless charging a card without authority is theft. (It was also clear at that time that they were doing a general – "you owe us a modem" mailout because they did not know what had been returned or not.

It has been Virgin's lack of ethics that has turned me to a permanent detractor. Like drl, when I get away from Virgin, I will remain here to warn others to take care. I actually think its ethical to warn others about the poor performance and ethics of any company or individual. It would be unethical to walk away and say "no longer my problem".

sorry but after more than 12 months of dumping a barely working product onto possibly thousands of suckers I think they have had more than a fair chance.

If its not working as it should after a year, how long do you think is reasonable?

And to the OP I did find the term "Turning Me On"
very offensive,

not because of its sexual reference,

but solely because I found the frustration of the product a huge put of.

I haven't seen him post he doesn't get Phone drop outs.

I havent seen him post how he plays online games without issues or even manages to complete an online banking session.

All I have seen him do is make personal attacks on people that dare report their personal experience of what is suppose to be a service they are paying for and not getting.

I don't attack people that say they are happy with it.
I tell them that its good to see some are getting what they pay for and wish them the best.

Also being a VK5 I expected it to be a little experimental and have a few teething issues to begin with.
But with how the issues never got dealt with and at times never even acknowledged on many occasions.
Then continuing to sell a product that was so over subscribed that it was collapsing and unusable at times was in my opinion unconscionable conduct.

OK, so please explain (does that remind me of someone) what you mean by "instill faith" because I genuinely don't get the relevance of faith to the issue. From the Macquarie Dictionary.

Faith:
1. confidence or trust in a person or thing.
2. belief which is not based on proof.
3. belief in the doctrines or teachings of religion.
4. the doctrines which are or should be believed.
5. a system of religious belief: the Christian faith; the Jewish faith.
6. the obligation of loyalty or fidelity (to a person, promise, engagement, etc.): to keep or break faith with.
7. the observance of this obligation: to act in good or bad faith.
8. Theology that trust in God and in God's promises as made through Christ by which humanity is justified or saved.
