See for yourself,

http://games.on.net

----------------------
The more observant of you may have noticed that something's a little different around here. There's a new look, a new logo and – excitingly – a new location!

The Internode Games Network is no more. Long live Games On Net!

...of course, with such a major change as this, some things are going to be a little bit wonky for a little while. If you find any bugs, anything that doesn't work the way you think it should, anything that looks a bit weird, or anything that's obviously broken, please let us know! We've set up a forum thread to help us with bug-squishing, so you can just post the details there! Easy!

I really like the layout, don't like the colour scheme.

You do realise that darker colours ie black are much more energy efficient?

Great Idea !! ... I always thought that the internode games network needed to separate themselves from Internode and be a more of Australian gaming website since it has great review writers and constant updates on gaming news. I think this will attract more and more gamers now and it will better advertise Internode.

It now visually fits in more with the new Internode website although the logo looks like a mac mini (or an apple appliance of some sort) .. and macs are not that much of a gaming icon.

That's a myth. It's been debunked by a lot of video people.

The reason is is that LCD's will still output the same amount of power regardless of the colour they just don't light the black area's of the screen up. The fluro light in the back on the LCD stays at the same power regardless of what it is showing on the screen.

Talk to any video expert and they'll confirm. :-)

I have dual 17" crts....using up alot of power.. .. lol

As for the new site.....i love the layout BUT i hate the colour. ...it should be darker

Jump onto the IRC channel #ign on irc.gamesurge.net and someone might be able to fix it for you.

I'm having a bit of trouble reading the orange-on-white headers/text. Of course, that could just be my tired, tired eyes...

Distinguishing individual news items is a bit tricky too as the grey news background is (IMHO) too close to the white background of the news item background.

It's a smooth layout to be sure but I feel a bit more contrast wouldn't go astray.

I don't particularly like the whole on.net thing (certainly don't use it for my email) but here it probably projects a better image for the site. Being an ISP's gaming page doesn't project as desirable an image as being a "dedicated" gaming site.

Anyway, through steam, downloaded TF2 when it was the free weekend and the host was internode, also got some other files from node gaming yet it has been subtracted from my quota (using nephew in vista). so atm im like -800mb on my recommended quota, will the ~1gb or so that TF2 was be added back to my account before i get capped? thanks

Yes.

That happened to me. All dls are counted, then the free quotas subtracted from your quota. So if you had 1gb left, and you downloaded a 20gb game from any unmetered source, you'll be initially shaped, then that 20gb will be given back to you after a couple of hours, thereby unshaping you.

nah I don't mind the flash ads. The google ads are annoying. Got adblock plus and added 'pagead2.googlesyndication.com' onto it and all google ads are blocked. woot.

:) thanks for the suggestion, chucky.

No worries!

I hate google ads' and most ads on the websites I visit so I will do anything and everything to remove them :P

There is no doubt a negative side to what we have done and that is the money raised from those google ads most likely pay for some aspect of the games network, or possibly contribute towards upgrades etc. But I figure if I was never going to click on the ad in the first place they wouldn't mind me blocking them as they only make the site I visit (far too regularly) ugly.

I fully understand the need to have those ads as GON is now targeted for all users, instead of mainly internode users as IGN did. I guess it's used to pay for the extra servers / equipment needed with the anticipated extra load of non-node users using the games network. That's why I suggested a solution above, node IP = no ads, non-node IP = google ads.

I'm quite happy if this solution is implemented. Sometimes I log into GON through AARNET (I think that's the internet provider for uni's), and I don't mind seeing those google ads then.

I just discovered I can view G.O.N videos on my PS3!! How cool is that. Just click on the download link, and the video starts buffering and plays almost instantly. Now if only I could get OfTheWorld to work.

It's extremely snappy – well done the hardware team. 10/10

As for the front end – it's standard corporate fare. Nothing glaringly wrong with it, but nothing we haven't seen 100 times before either. 7/10

Both old and new sites are down for me :(

Very annoying as i have a big file
to DL, also wouldn't it of made good
sense to keep the old site up until the
new 1 worked properly?

:(

The new site has been up almost the whole time apart from ½ hour at 6am this morning. We are also hoping we have found the bug so it wont happen again.

I don't mind the new look at all. The only aspect of the website I care about is the files. :P

One thing I've always disliked about IGN/GON, though, is the inability to change your username from the control panel. Is there any reason why this feature is disabled?

Not sure what you mean there. Logout/Login with different user name is not hard.

As for the reasoning, most people that are jumping between names on forums are doing it for a reason, usually trolling/causing trouble

Whilst you can't change it from the control panel, if you submit a support request one of the friendly Senior Administrators will usually do it for you.

Most likely as stated above. People will abuse the system and continually change their names and cause trouble whilst we are under the impression it is not the same person. By submitting a Support Request we can keep a track of who you are/were.

Irrelevant, really.

Surely this is easily stopped by banning them or applying restrictions to their account? I would imagine that since accounts are issued an ID number, a name change does nothing but inconvenience a name-based search.

People (staff included) are more likely to remember the name of a trouble-maker than their number.

Anyone made the untimely mistake of forgetting the s in games and winded up at a blank page?

Suprised me to say at the least. (Hmm, you should point the other one to the proper site.)

Of course. But tracking down an account ID number wouldn't be hard if posts made by the offender/s are brought the attention of staff.
