Noticed my Internet slow down to an absolute crawl late last night. Even browsing whirlpool had unusualy long delays. I haven't been capped, came close to reaching 100% but didn't get there. Shrugged it off and went to sleep in the early AM but find the problem persisting this morning.. Downloading the 11mb test file from http://www.optuszoo.com.au/help/downloadtest shows my current download speed to be 7.76KB/Sec – Just short of 25 minutes to download an 11mb file. Heaven! Wtf? My cable is usually excellent. The problem won't be PC related as I've checked on all 3 computers in the house. Anyone else experiencing issues before I email Optus support? <yeh I know a contradiction in terms, but humour me> |

I was shaped for the last week too. Couldnt even download an email or even view the BOM radar without it timing out. Its sposed to be shaped to 64 but is 10 times worse than a dial up 56k plan. Its like at the end of the month, everyones on shaped and they shove us on the smallest pipe. bastards. Now everytime ABC torrent speed goes over 100, it stops. I tried Vuze and the same thing. I could be getting 700 speed, but it wont allow anything over about 100. Yes I checked everything, program, speed, bla bla, its OPTUS that is doing it. |

I wonder what's wrong. It's only been this year I've experienced problems with optus speeds. Check your neigbourhood. Quite possibly a result of a significant increase in subscribers to higher speed plans or more subscribers in general. As mentioned already, things are usually at their worst at the start of every new month, and particularly during evening peak times. Cheers :) |

no indication on their 'official' service status page Yep.. Important Notice: No current issues Checked this morning and was exactly the same. Service status pages that only report bullocks are about as useful as teats on a bull.. As of about 10.30 tonight, speed issues appear to have eased.. Download test file came in just short of 1MB a second (what I'm used to) and web sites seem to be coming up faster. Try getting optus to admit there was a problem though! Lets hope whatever they fixed lasts. |

Check your neigbourhood. Quite possibly a result of a significant increase in subscribers to higher speed plans or more subscribers in general. There is no way in hell there could be such an increase in subscribers to cause an 11mb file to take 25 minutes to download from the Optus file server. As mentioned already, things are usually at their worst at the start of every new month, and particularly during evening peak times. That may account for noticably slower speeds sometimes, certainly not a cable network that makes dialup look more like broadband however. |

There is no way in hell there could be such an increase in subscribers to cause an 11mb file to take 25 minutes to download from the Optus file server. There sure is. Additional subscribers mean more physical connections to the network and more work being done on the network. Greater possibility of a hardware failure on the network, eg. faulty cable splitter in the street etc. which can and do cause such slow-downs (both temporary and permanent!) I've seen it happen, and I've experienced myself. Only way to resolve it is to keep bugging Optus Tech Support. or keeping an eye out for a tech. working in the street. Cheers :) |

I've been with Optusnet cable for "several" years and in all that time, all these "additional subscribers" you're talking about have slowed my connection down to WELL below dialup modem speed is ... wait for it ... Once. That's yesterday just as I wrote in my original post. Going by your predictions, I can expect to get 7 or 8KB/Sec downloads on a regular basis now right? lol.. Get ya hand off it Whirl. ;) |

There appear to have been some problems on parts of the network, such as earlier this year when speeds slowed to a crawl in parts of Melbourne and elsewhere, and overseas sites were inaccessible. Optus never acknowledged anything officially, but apparently some customers received acknowledgment from Optus staff over the phone. Given the many variables that can affect a network, I generally wait out the slowdowns, etc., as it's pointless to harangue call centre staff who generally don't know much anyway. If it's a persistent problem, lasting more than a day, then it's time to alert tech support, providing nothing's happened at your end to cause the problem. For the first time ever I was "shaped" during the last 9 days of August, and found the experience frustrating, to say the least, but I got over it. I found that 64Kbps isn't a bad speed for forum reading, and this forum in particular works very well at that speed, using the latest Firefox. Pages loaded quickly the whole time. It probably helps that WP isn't burdened with a lot of animations and graphics, which can really slow things down if you're on dial-up speed. |

Okay now I beg to differ with the comment about not harassing Helpdesk staff. We have call centres where I work and when the Helpdesk get 'harassed' everything is logged and 'other' people analyse the reason if there is a deluge. If nobody called the Helpdesk, who will ever know the 'severity' of the issue? Or indeed the priority? Given that a factor of my monthly fee is attributed to having a Helpdesk more people should exercise it. Harassing is perhaps a harsh word, I think the term I am looking for is inform. I am not advocating any abuse of any sort, merely that issues such as this needs to be reported in some manner. |

We're with Optus, not a budget ISP. We pay for a support team that is there to provide us with answers to our problems. I find that when you try 'inform' them, they think your PC has a virus & you have no idea what a computer is. :) |

Once. That's yesterday just as I wrote in my original post. Going by your predictions, I can expect to get 7 or 8KB/Sec downloads on a regular basis now right? lol.. uh huh... We had no problems with Optus Cable for years. Then an immediate neighbour joined the service and immediately both their new service and our service slowed to a permanent crawl. A week into it, after a couple of calls to Optus tech support by both of us, and there was a tech. out the front up the pole replacing a faulty cable splitter that had (apparently) been damaged during the neighbour's install the week before. End result. Every thing back to (great) normal. Every one happy. Speed just seemed to return to normal about 10.30pm (Melb time) Perhaps the possums in your locale decided to stop urinating on your cable splitter ;) Cheers :) |

Perhaps the possums in your locale decided to stop urinating on your cable splitter ;) Heh.. all their relatives in other affected locale's must have also had the same idea and stopped urinating on splitters all over Australia then. ;) I'd suggest it's far more likely that it had nothing to do with splitters being damaged or urinated on all over Australia and that Optus just fixed the problem after all the complaints started rolling in. Cheers.. |

That's about max, Optus says cable can do up to 20Mbps but I've never seen it. In a speed test just completed I got 10503/245 kb/s, which is a good clip. Of course they're speeds to and from a local server. Access to many remote servers tends to be considerably slower, particularly servers contending with heavy traffic. That's largely out of local ISPs' control. Some sites I've visited, particularly a very busy forum situated in the US, can make it seem like I'm on dial-up, while other sites in the US deliver streaming video as though the server's in the next room. |

i'm in altona meadows and have had a laggy connection since about 25 July. Only seems to be laggy between 6pm and 11pm. Obviously a problem within the internal optus network. This is my first hop when perfoming a tracert. I was pinging this as I was on the phone with an optus technician, or supervisor as i asked for, and they assured me there is absolutely nothing wrong. First hop would normally ping 6-7ms any other time of the day. Reply from 10.68.0.1: bytes=32 time=145ms TTL=255 Just wasted 40 mins of my life listening to that crap and have to waste another few hours organising a new isp thankyou optus! |

If Internet Connections slows down suddenly that means there is a faulty power connection somewhere or on of your faulty lights. i had the same problem. Having ADSL2 Connection normally gives me more than 3.8m/b ps but suddenly i only got 700.02 kbps out of it. freakysh!! so for some reason my younger sister was playing with the all the switches, playing on and off, when the switches went off the speed of the net was at it's best, but turned on gave me the same problem, so i changed all the faulty ones using the connection speed of the internet. Worked well!! |

I'm on NSW Blacktown 5 and I just solved all my problems by getting a static IP, follow the tutorial from portforward.com . Seriously, it's fix'd. I did this on all of my computers par one, and that one is still slow. Seriously, try it, and tell me if this is just a coincidence. |

so I sit here and read everyone complaining about this crap service, and think to myself what can be done? im in Vic, on optus cable , sunshine node btw and see nothing ever more that 380KB/s ive complained to optus on the phone, all i got from that was me angry ive complained to optus via email, all i got from that was a proforma email , and start back at step one again ive complained to the TIO , again complete waste of time and ive complained to ACCC about their advertising ( as if i ever see ANY of the speeds advertised ) and they said they dont act on single complaints...... so here i am......... a man feels defeated |

I don't know what is going on, but arriving home from work tonight I found my access noticeably faster than usual. I've run three tests, the zdnet.com.au one, the optus one, and the Oz one below. All gave similar results. Test Results from Oz Broadband Speed Test Mirror: OptusNet Your line speed is 6.62 Mbps (6618 kbps). I am in St Kilda, Vic, on cable. Has something happened to speed things up? |

Cable user here too with Optus, lastnight and today the entire thing has been slow. For example downloading at 25kbs and using the VOIP is causing the VOIP to stutter etc a real sign that there is something going on. yes I am using QOS |

May i just say that this is poor for cable yes you may :) that speed is pretty crap even by optus's standards of late. I'd be checking to see if you didn't have anything else running at the time (p2p, updates) and suggest using the 9 or 15 mb test as well, they tend to be more accurate. If it continues that way, I'd be ringing optus support. |

Wasted 3hrs on Optus technical support today. Using the "Cable technical support" phone number I still had to navigate the infuriating voice activated menu to infact tell them what I thought to be the redundant information that I was indeed looking for technical support for my cable internet connection. Any way, the first phone call to the "cable technical support" number ended in me being placed in a queue to talk to some one then being given the automated message that "the customer support center is currently closed please call back during business hours". So much for 24/7 technical support, they just send you to the wrong department then hang up...try again. Second phone call I get some outsourced call center guy who proceeds to show no interest whatsoever in the fact I've wasted the last 10 minutes trying to speak to a living person. After telling him that my internet speeds have been atrocious for the last few weeks he informs me he will "just check some details" then proceeds to hang up on me. Third phone call I get another outsourced call center guy who is decidedly more professional and actually confirms my customer details before proceeding to "help" me. Not bad, nearly 20 minutes before I actually start the process of fixing my internet connection speed. Well to cut an already long story short, the third phone call ranged from them running through the perfunctory "clear your cookies" crap through to download a speed test file from the optus server to we'll organise a technician to come out to "oh we've found there to be no problem on your line" to "we suggest you arrange to have a computer technician examine your computer". Well thanks for nothing! Seems like all the people who have complained about poor speed issues in this thread over the last few weeks are all experiencing that mythical ISP favourite: spontaneous home computer malfunctions which have absolutely nothing to do with their infrastructure. Give me a break... Test run on 21/09/2008 @ 08:26 PM Mirror: OptusNet Your line speed is 2.5 Mbps (2501 kbps). Thats leaps and bounds better than what I had for most of the day. 88k/sec and fluctuating. Cant download much of anything at the moment, cant online game since my ping is anywhere from 800ms to 2200ms. Money well spent. Methinks I'll ring customer service during Australian business hours this time and demand to be compensated for this debacle. |

For some reason I have seen a tremndous decrease in speed the last week or so. General surfing on sites like ebay and wp is slow, page loads take longer than they used to. Eg up to about 15 seconds to load homepage of Ebay or ebay trying to load this page now http://www.swarovski.com and its taken over 1 min. Not sure what is going on with Optus latley. As usual though people complain of problems and organizations say nothing wrong everything normal. |

what should i reasonably expect for a speedtest? Based on my cable connection it's a bit of a mixed result, Generally you can expect around the 10mbps mark during peak which for me is around 6pm to 10pm. |

Only having a 4GB limit it might be good i can't use up all the quota in an hour :P Watch that usage closely you don't want to get stung with that $150 per GB excess usage charge!, That's why i went with the $129 fusion plan. Edit: spelling. |
