downloading and updating took about 10 mins.

My iPhone didn't really have any problems. Looking at my reception though, I'm having 4-5 bars. Yesterday, it was averaging on 3. Will have to keep an eye out on it throughout the day.

Yes, it should do a backup of your settings on that machine (so that it will be able to put your settings back for you once it finishes upgrading).

Guys over at modmyifone have tried with with winpwn and it doesn't work... When they did an update without pwning they lost their jailbreak.

http://www.modmyifone.com/forums/news/273491-firmware-2-0-1-available-2.html

So for now anyone who still wants thier jailbreak will have to wait for the devteam to update their pwn tool.

I'm always skeptical when devs make ambiguous statements like that.

All it says to me is – We're trying a few different things out, but we're not going to tell you what they are cause then you'll expect them to work, and we don't want to be expected to meet your expectations.

I understand why they do it, I just think it's amateur and would expect more from Apple, I guess I'm just used to seeing game patches with definitive fix lists :P

Maybe there is a proper fix list somewhere, I just can't find it.

3G reception appears to be stronger
No SMS lag
Overall performance appears to be 'snappier'
Backing up is faster

Update on the carrier update error:

The dialogue clearly states that there is a carrier update available, would you like to download it and update...

I put the emphasis on download – because for me anyway – I got an error immediately.

I'd speculate that the error was in downloading the carrier update from Apple/optus rather than from applying the update to the phone.

If you expect more from Apple you'll be sorely disappointed. "Bug fixes" is attached to every update for any Apple product and is only occasionally spelled out in any detail in support documents posted later on.

Edit: Update working for me now. It just cut off a conversation when it did start working...

This is a fix if you get a Unknown Error (1604) screen.
Turn off the iPhone and pull the chord from the computer
Uninstall iTunes
Re-Install iTunes
Restart your computer if prompted
Pull the SIM card out of the top of the iphone (Instructional Video)
Get the Yellow Triangle of Death or The Cable to iTunes screen[Hold the home and power buttons for max 30 seconds]
Plug in your phone and open iTunes
Hit Restore(It should be working by now...)
Re-insert your SIM card into your iPhone.
Re-activate your iPhone.
Restore your data from your latest update

From what I understood the signal bar strength change is only now displaying what it should have been before – where other phones got a full signal, the iphone got 3 bars, not because the iphone has a bad receiver but because it was somehow mis-representing the strength...

Updated my jailbroken iPhone 3G to 2.0.1.

It works fine but you lose the jailbreak, obviously. Will rejailbreak when pwnagetool updates.

As for reports, everything's a hell of a lot snappier, so as an interim solution to the problems, and if you're not going gung ho on everything regarding the jailbreak, I'd install it.

Keep waiting, don't do anything it will eventually finish the update – it seems to take for ever....

Hrm. That's interesting. I modded my phone to show a percentage for the battery meter up in the corner, and it's persisted, it's still showing as a percentage...

Same thing happened to me when i switched from my 1st gen to 3G Iphone. my 1st Gen had the percentage battery, when i plugged in my new 3G iPhone (no jailbreak) it copied my settings across including the digital battery meter!

Mine updated fine (optus). I did the download separately. The actual backup/update process took less than 10 mins.

I didnt notice an error RE carrier settings, however when the iphone was restarting after the update, and before itunes had picked it up, i did get an error dialog which I wasnt able to read as I was typing at the time, and as the error message automatically stole focus, i dismissed the message accidentally.

My update failed with the "unknown error (6)", and locked the iPhone.

I forced the power off/recovery mode (home button and sleep button for 5-10 secs) and restored the software with iTunes. Took ages (20 min+) but it worked. I then restored my backup, which for some stupid reason didn't backup my synced music and pictures. It appears 'backup' is only half a backup. :p

Does anyone know when the carrier (Optus) update problem is going to be fixed.
I hope the Optus update fixes reception..

Just updated to FW 2.0.1 and everything worked perfectly. After the update I was advised of a carrier setting update. This also worked perfectly. I am on Telstra! Also three of my apps had updates. Seems to be a no brain process, that works for me :)

Select "Download Only" on one PC, then copy the 2.0.1 located in %appdata%\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates the same location on the other PCs.

for those who say it fixed the contacts lag, where you on the 2.0 *45 or *47 firmware before?

The *47 had already fixed by contacts lag...

I concur... from *47 to 2.0.1, some of the lag seems to have gotten 'better'. contacts scrolling is better... getting the search bar up on the contacts page is quicker too

I'm currently on *47 and do notice a lag within SMS and Contacts, just waiting to finish work to test those two out.

After loads of reloading etc. I found another XP machine with clean Itunes install (even though id reinstalled itunes 3 times on other machine) used a different cable, used same IPSW and it worked (took ages but worked)

I have to say....Why does everyone complain so much? I love Apple for providing this update to quickly. I mean it has only been about a month since the 2.0 came out! When was the last time Nokia emailed you and said "oh....here is a piece of software that will improve your phones performance. And we will keep updating and helping you out for the life of your hardware....for free."

OR for that matter....when was the last time Dell did that?

I am loving this iphone and I am loving this update.

Well so far the "life" of the iPhone is 1 year for the 2G and 1 month for the 3G. Let's see how the updates fare in 2 years time. Based on what has happened with various iPod models, they'll just stop getting improvements and basic features.

....for free."

(Unless, you're an iPod Touch user, in which case we're going to charge you US$20 to get Mail+Maps+Weather and another US$10 for 2.0)

Nokia do critical updates. A lot of the time the end user cannot see them though because the carrier has decided to lock the phone's settings down to the nth degree.

I wouldn't consider this a favour by Apple also. If I were running a business I would consider it critical to make eveything run smoothly for my customers or risk churn from a negative customer experience and see them jump ship merely related to a few programming bugs. I wouldn't want to invest so much money bringing this to market and see it go the way of samsung's instinct.

hmm.....I actually said...when was the last time nokia emailed you or let you know?

I guess I didnt get that email because they only bothered to make their software updater windows compatible. At least Apple caters for windows and PC users.

Wonder if it's got to do with the Network Selection settings on the iPhone. Out of the Box my network selectioin was set to Automatic and I changed it to Telstra Mobile (3G) as below.

I've just noticed a couple contacts I added to my phone on the weekend are missing... looks like the syncing got a little messed up somewhere along the lines...

In my experience apple has always provided top customer support. Really fast and really well. I dont consider it a favour but I do appreciate it alot. It may be that all businesses SHOULD do it that way....but they dont.

Ok...this thread is about the update. I will try and stop my apple happiness now seeing as it bothers some people so much.

I'm assuming that if your phone was unlocked by Optus/Telstra previously that after this firmware update it will still be unlocked?

Just wanted to see if anyone out there can verify this.

Did a quick Google and it appears that 3Telstra (3G) is a joint Network 50% Hutchinson and 50% Telsta owned. Telstra Mobile 3G is all Telstra...me thinks?

Folks having issue with carrier packs. I think this issue might be your carrier pack that was downloaded got corrupted.

Go to where iTunes stores your updates on a mac its library = itunes = iphone carrier support. In this file you will see the carrier pack delete it and then reconnect phone and download a new copy
