I'm curious to know the real world speeds of this plan.

Bigpond Liberty 12GB ADSL2+ data per month

Can as many people as possible post and give me an indication of their real download speeds that they get on average.

I'm expecting some sock puppets who will no doubt give me some wonderful speeds.

What I want to know is the lowest speeds people are getting (worst case scenarios).

I would like to hear from anybody in Victoria whether it be the city or the country areas.

I used this link to dowload 71MB stormchasers video in 720P HD.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/musicandvideo/hdvideo/contentshowcase.aspx

I get 231KB/sec down load to 155KB which is reasonably stable.

downloading from microsoft just pulls data from the AKAMAI servers so you should pretty much be downloading as fast as possible – not really a indication of real world speeds since it's cache

Akamai transparently mirrors content (usually media objects such as audio, graphics, animation, video) stored on customer servers.

http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/1999/sept99/AkamaiPr.mspx

By becoming an Akamai customer, Microsoft joins the list of leading Web companies that rely on Akamai for high-performance, reliable delivery of content to their users.

Basically it means that Akamai transparently mirrors Microsoft (and a lot of other sites) to give everyone excellent speeds from the mirror.

I can download at twice the speed from Microsoft/Apple then i can from Gamearena/BP Files.

It cannot really be used to measure the 'norm' as it isnt, it's the opposite, it's the best speeds you'll ever get (good for speedtests though)

One of the biggest factors that will affect the speed of this download is BigPond's DNS servers!?!?!

If download.microsoft.com is resolved to a local AKAMAI cache, then you will max out whatever your connect speed is like this:

If it's cached, you're downloading from a server in Australia. If it's not, you're downloading from the US. Obviously it has to transmit further – and thus, the speeds are slow.

It's nothing to do with BigPond's link – they're all pretty much the same. It is just due to our location/separation from the rest of the world.

i said i get 160KB/s per thread of international traffic.

When i use multi threaded application my overall speed is almost linear to the total threads, eg, 20 threads x 160KB/s = ~3.2MB/s

I know there's a limit placed per thread on my international traffic yet i also know im not near capacity of my connection so when i use something that makes use of this i can get faster speeds (think premium newsgroups)

What is the maximum speed that you can download this video at without using a download manager ?

I posted my max speed before, I only use the built in download manager for IE or a command line app called "wget" – Neither support multi-threading.

You've oversimplified this a lot.

The major factors in determining the real world speed you get on ADSL2+ is; Sync speed, time of day, load/bandwidth of server, location of server.

Yes, that is the only guarantee. Majority of people should do much better than that, but it is the only guaranteed speed, because there are so many other factors involved in internet speed. Chances are if you read the fine print of all ISP plans, they will be pretty much the same. No-one will absolutley guarantee much over 110KB/sec, because they don't want to get into arguments with customers over the fact the you get 200KB/sec and your mate 3 suburbs away gets 500KB/sec.

Hmm a bit tender eh :D ... the "achilles heal" of this plan.

I'm after the truth.

And seeing as Sol is not into any "kumbaya, holding hands" I want to know just how fast or how slow this "claimed" speed is.

I'm gettting more than the contracted speed that I signed up to, so I'm happy in that regard.

I just got off the phone with someone that has the BP Liberty 12GB ADSL2+ plan and he told me the speed drop for him was depresssing compared to his OPTUS ADSL2 where he was getting approximately 930KB/s and higher.

His estimate was of the speed that he is getting is 150 KB/s, so this is far from what I thought one would get for the BP Liberty ADSL2+ plan that Telstra is offering me.

Guaranteed 110Kb/sec eh? Hmm, does that mean I have legitimate means to contact someone about why I've only been getting a maximum of 10KB/sec on the 12GB Liberty plan for the past week or more?

At first I thought it may just be I had exceeded the limit and had been returned to dial-up speeds as stated in the plan, however the usage summary shows I haven't even used 5GB as of today, one day before the new payable month starts.

Surely you couldn't be getting speeds that low on ADSL2+, I would cancel immediatly and look for another ISP.

You must mean 110KB, I get 230KB down to 149KB ~155KB, I woudn't put up with rubbish like that.

This to me is the big problem with Bigpond, when they advertise speeds FROM 110KB up to 20,000 kbp/s this is just not good enough.

Can you imagine a car dealer saying Umm well give you a car it will be something between a small Hyundai up to a Bugattii Veyron – yeah right !!!

Look most people are getting a standard Holden but of course it could be the Hyundai, we have no way of telling ???

I can get up to ~2400 kb/sec depending where I download from. The ABC2 website is a good download rate for me (2400) and SOMETIMES GameArena can give me suitable speeds. It all depends where you download from. If all you do is download from Rapidshare on a free account then your not going to get much speed are you? It's generally capped at the servers end and not the users end. So those with <50 make sure your actually downloading off some site that can give you a good speed and your not shaped for the month.

so much Anti-Telstra/Bigpond stuff there MZ.

With the number of posts ye have though, ye should know that Line Speed is limited to the Line Condition etc, rather than the Plan's speed your on.

For example, at my current residence, based off my Modem readins, I wouldn't expect more than 4 Mbps. Not something I would relate to the plan I on or anything, thats simply a cause of the distance I am from the exchange etc.

You might get different results with different Providers (Backhaul etc) but, the main issue with Speed is Line Condition.

I pay for 1500/256, and that is the speed I expect to get, I don't give them 5 ~ 50 dollars, I give then what I agreed to, no less no more.

many views but not many posts..

everyones computer and setup is different.
with different hardware inside their computer, different network setup, settings/configurations, different software installed, line quality etc. the list goes on.
not all are the same, hence not everyone can reach the maximum advertised speed.

i guess, you get what you pay for, live next door to the exchange, with the best quality line, buy the best computer and set it up for maximum speed

IInet says...

More than half of our broadband2+ customers experience speeds in excess of 10,000kbps with a small percentage clearing 20,000kbps, up to 24,000kbps.

When I compare Internode's with BigPond I'm left with the feeling that Internode is transparent and frank about what they are claiming thats not the feeling I get from Telstra BigPond's ADSL2+ service, where even the fine print "LINK" is right down the bottom of the page in very fine print.

Initially I missed the link and thought what was at the bottom of the page was the fine print until I looked further.

Hi guys I just want to share with you what is happening in my complex (QLD) I think is kind of relevant to the topic. Dont get to exited with Fiber optic as there are issues with this technology if you dont believe me as Telstra.
I live in one of those communities that the builder made an agreement with Telstra to install fiber optic to every townhouse. The problem that we are having is if you use more than one Ethernet point at one time you get disconnected after 10 minutes. We had Telstra technicians come into the complex with different versions of what is going on but none of then have being able to fix the problem.
I dont like Telstra at all I think they overcharge there customers but I dont have a choice.

I have Cable 12G Liberty Extreme. Have had it for around 18 months. Initially we could get close to the advertised max speeds (30,000 kbps) on a regular basis. This plan costs me $70 per month. For the last few months we have noticed the speed slowing. I do regular speed tests from Telstra servers and at different times of the day. The best I can now get is 11,000 kbps. The plan lower than the one I'm on is the Cable 12G Liberty standard plan with speeds capped at 8,000. On contacting Telstra Technical services and going through the switch everything off and on again process and line testing they told me that the line signal was "down a bit" but because I was getting greater that 880 kbps I would have to pay for any Technician call outs! Let me re cap – I pay for up to 30,000 kbps, I get max 11,000 kbps and its only an issue to Telstra if I get below 880kbps. Is this not stealing?Telstra take my money and do not provide the service I pay for. That is a criminal offence. If anyone else conducted business this way they would be charged. By the way 2 other people in our street have exactly the same issue and are on the same plans (because this is what the door to door sales people sold).

Any ideas out there on what we can do. Do we band together and make a complaint to the regulator? Do we go to one of the current affairs programs? Do others have the same problem?

I would be interested to read what speed you are getting ?

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/musicandvideo/hdvideo/contentshowcase.aspx

And what happens, do you intially get a burst of speed, and then it tapers off or does it start slow and get faster ?

Are you one BP Liberty ADSL2+ with 10GB ?

Wow. 200kb/s on ADSL2+ for the first poster! That hurts!

I have ADSL 8mbps plan and am getting speeds of around 650-750kb/s depending on what site and whether i am using Free Download Manager or not. I am around 3.7km away from my exchange as well...

i used to be on cable 10 Mbit, now on DSL. Horses for different courses, i guess.

I noticed 30% of you receive 2 MB/s+, that's 120 MB per minute, which is fast... does that mean you get to download at 64kbps after the first 100 minutes of your plan?

Then I guess value comes out @ around $5 per Gigabyte yeh?

For me, I'm paying $1.13 a gigabyte for 76 gb, including my Telstra Homeline Budget. My line can max out 1 Mbps most of the time for my plan.

So it's hard to beat that at the 'Pond yah?

Anybody on dialup could vote that they are getting 2MB/s there's no way of knowing whether these speeds are correct.

Still lets hope they are for everybody's who uses Bigpond ADSL2+.

Surely you couldn't be getting speeds that low on ADSL2+, I would cancel immediatly and look for another ISP.

Its possible they have a line fault which is irrelevant of the ISP and need to be addressed.

Bigpond and Telstra are one and the same are they not ?

If there was a line fault it is in the interest of that person to have the line fixed.

Why wouldn't you do anything about it ?

you seem to have misunderstood,

They may have a line fault that needs to be addressed rather then cancelling their service and churning which can take a minimum of 6 days to remove codes, jumper and reapply new codes, then find still the same line fault leading to further delays, whereas they should contact their techsupport and get a fault lodged if required, which will take ~3 days ..

Actually I downloaded XP SP3 from a Microsoft server and it downloaded at 2.1 megabytes per second. Why is it I can download full speed from MS's website and even steam (using GameArena's mirror), and only download up to 1.5mb/s from any bigpond servers :(

Cause MS's files come from Akamai cache server that would be in QLD next time download something do a "netstat" and you see a hostname with Akamai in it, treaceroute to that and you see its in QLD, where i believe GameArena's server are in NSW.

TCP tuning. The extra latency between NSW and Qld isn't much, but window size limits on Bigpond servers are insufficient to keep the pipe full for high-speed clients.
Even though I'm with Bigpond, I get much better "OzSpeedTest" results from the Optusnet mirror than the Bigpond one.

And what do you mean by average ?

My internet connection mostly starts off at say a burst of 230KB then settles down to between 150KB ~ 160KB, sometimes I don't get these speeds but that's rare.

Try down loading this file, if you don't want to download it all just download approximately 30% and then cut it, have a look at what speed it is downloading it at.

Have at the transfer rate under the download to ...

That will give you and idea of how fast your connection is or how slow it is. :P
