Greetings
Amnet is excited to announce that we have completed work on upgrading our infrastructure at the Cannington exchange. With this upgrade complete we will be moving existing customers on ADSL 1 services to an Amnet ADSL 2+ service. This process will be done in stages due to restrictions on the number of customers that can be ‘migrated’ at once. Customers will be contacted in stages by email over the coming weeks with a timeframe for when they will be upgraded. The entire process will take up to one month to be completed.
We would like to thank those customers who have shown great patience during the upgrade process.
For any questions or queries please call the Amnet Support Team on 1300 882 232.
Regards Jamie Gray Amnet/Amcom

Great news Jamie!
although I was already on Amcom gear when I was living in Cannington, and getting some pretty decent speeds out of whatever gear you had in there at the time, I'm sure many people will be very happy about this...
do you know if there are currently any plans to head over to the neighbouring Maddington exchange and put some (any will do) Amcom equipment in there?
or is Maddington just too messy to ever touch?

More than likely Amcom fiber doesn't reach the Maddington exchange. Amcom wont enable exchanges that dont have their fiber running to it. Bassendean is a good example. It is one of iiNets biggest exchanges but Amcom wont run fiber to it.

That would explain it....
i've submitted (several times) those 'expressions of interest' on their website with a request for more information on their plans for the exchange, but haven't heard anything back yet...
when i moved from cannington, i was told 'we're upgrading everywhere as soon as we can' (that and 'we don't know if you're on the maddington or cannington exchange, you'll have to get your phone connected first')
if they'd said straight away 'you aint getting jack there', we could have found another place, we had no ties to this house at that point...
of course, once we'd moved in, signed a 6 month lease and signed up for the amnet connection, we got 'oh no, we don't intend going to maddington, it's not viable'
i couldn't quite figure how an exchange servicing growing suburbs could be 'not viable', but i guess if amcon don't have fibre to the exchange, then that explains it...

I have been wondering why I couldn't connect for the past 2 days. Keeps saying PAP Authentication Failed.

This is unrelated to the exchange upgrade. Please contact Amnet Support on 1300 88 22 32 if you are still experiencing problems.

Me too.
The issue is Amnet has changed something in their configuration. Change username to be <username>@amnet.net.au and it'll work fine. Would've been nice to let us know :)

And a five minute call to Support wouldn't have fixed this?
I don't meant to be harsh, but waiting 2 days and not asking questions is kinda funny...

They announced probably 8 years ago that they were putting in a fibre link towards the south east metro area an connecting Armadale with Kwinanna. All information regarding this was removed from their website 5 years ago.
I think their fibre rollout finished about this time.

Are you sure that they have changed something in their config? <username>@amnet still works fine for me, so I'm not so sure.
Perhaps a call to support would be worthwhile? There may be something wrong with your account, or something at your end.

Yes, they did.
I never had the @amnet.net.au in my authentication details. Adding it made it work, perfectly first time. I couldn't call tech support because they were closed so I was fault finding on my end and reconfigured. If I take out the @amnet.net.au if the PAP fails again. Logical conclusion is that they broke it :)

Actually, the logical conclusion I take from that is that your modem broke. Without evidence to the contrary, your problem is limited to a sum total of: you, indicating that your equipment is at fault :D
Auth realms don't work like you probably think they do. As far as I understand it, they're used to identify the provider to assist in backhaul routing, or something like that. (note: this is probably incorrect. lightguard inc. takes no responsibility when you make an arse out of yourself repeating it to someone who actually knows how it works) On a Telstra Broadband connection, having the right one is necessary. Without it, you won't authenticate at all. On an enabled exchange, there's only one place your connection can possibly go to; Amnet. In this case, the auth realm isn't really important. In fact, if you're on an enabled exchange, I believe you can set it to whatever you want to; it doesn't matter. That may screw up things like usage logs, though, which is why they tell you to set it.

My actual first guess was to try the email address – I thought "Hmm, one day if Amnet resells their DSLAMS, others ISPs won't have a generic username on their own hardware..." plugged it in and presto :)
So I suppose whilst not being a "fault" – it's more of a "feature" that annoyed me enough to use it? :) heh

If my aunt churned to amnet from internode, would she qualify for upgrade to adsl2 when its available?

Is your aunt on Cannington? If so, then presumably ADSL2+ ports are available now.

Yeah she is, which is why I ask. I just don't think she'd approve of the reconnection fee to change from adsl1 to adsl2+.

Can I take Jamie's lack of response to this (while continuing to post in the thread) as "we have no plans to ever touch the Maddington exchange, you may as well find another ISP"?

Few things that stop as ISP from doing other exchanges
1) cost involved 2) telstra 3) physical space 4) electricity, heating, cooling supply that is currently there 5) did I mention telstra :P

Add to that the cost of backhaul. Does Amcom have any fibre near the Maddington exchange? If not, they would need to run new fibre to it. This would blow the cost out of the water.

Thats why I'm asking the question.... A simple 'sorry, our fibre stops at Cannington' would make a pretty good justification for postponing any upgrades indefinately... However, i've been on a non-enabled connection here for a couple at least 18 months now, after moving from an enabled connection in Cannington (about 2 – 3 years) and an Arachnet connection in Cottesloe before that... I'd like to stay with Amcom/net here, but only if there's some light at the end of the tunnel...
