Can anyone tell me if every NextG phone tower is also a connection point for wireless NextG data or does Telstra sometimes only allow data connections to certain towers in areas that might have two cell coverage.

I can see two towers from our property, one is 1 km away, another is about 8 km away and I'm wondering if maybe I'm connecting through the further tower. I get 2-3 bars signal strength indoors with the stubby antenna on the blue external modem.

I hope this question makes sense.

Drew.

Are you sure they are both Telstra towers?

Sometimes it could be a GSM only tower.

Their a search page on ACMA somewhere, that you can put in a locations find the base station and see what ranges it use.

I put up the page when i remember it or get to work tomorrow

Drew,

I had a similar situation. I found I got better reception when I plugged the modem into a USB extension cable and stuck the extension lead to the top of my screen. The modem is now near the window and away for the other equipment, and I have 5 bars all the time. If I use it in the lounge on my laptop, I only get 2.
