I was reading this morning about the new ABC streaming televison, iView. They state that they are currently in negotiations with other ISPs to offer ABC iView unmetered to their customers. It looks as though it's going to be a great service, and something that not only will I enjoy but my children as well. I was just wondering if this is something Comcen/Spin is considering? Cheers Jodie |

On some plans ABC content is unmetered as it comes via pipe most of the time. |

ABC are running from Akamai It seems now that they are currently not using Akamai for their streams and the server it comes from for these pages are on pipe. Tracing route to media1.abc.net.au [202.6.74.108] 1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms home.gateway [10.0.0.100] I also played some of their previews. http://www.abc.net.au/tv/vid Tracing route to flash.abc.net.au [202.6.74.106] 1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms home.gateway [10.0.0.100] But even when they were using Akamai it has come from a pipe server everytime I have used it in the past, if for some reason it selects a non pipe server you can change your DNS servers to iiNet or Internode and then it should force it to come from a pipe server ;) |

I just watched an episode of Brat Camp, and was paying special attention to my usage meter, and that show definitely came through Pipe and was free data. Its been the same story for me with all of the ABC's podcasts and vodcasts, all free Pipe data, so I for one am very pleased with this! Thanks comcen! |

Just checked the iView streams and it seems to be coming from a US based Akamai server rather than a local content server. Tracing route to a139.vi5g1.akafms.net [72.247.247.116] 1 1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 10.0.0.100 I switched my DNS servers to the iiNet ones and did a ipconfig /flushdns then ran iView again and found it was coming from the iiNet Akamai servers. Tracing route to a139.vi5g1.akafms.net [203.206.129.37] 1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 10.0.0.100 |

Maybe in a year or two the commercial networks will catch-up with the ABC. They will but at a price (Not only to your download limit). |

I don't know if it will come through the Pipe network Yes, the transit to ABC's iView is all via PIPE. They had some speed issues with the iiNet akamai mirror that we get a few weeks ago (even iiNet customers could only get 500-700kbps from it), however that seems to have been fixed and it's back to a great service now. |

That's all well and good for those who do get free pipe, but is there any news for those of us on ADSL2 who don't get free pipe? |

That's all well and good for those who do get free pipe, but is there any news for those of us on ADSL2 who don't get free pipe? Those who don't get free PIPE have it go into their (larger) unmetered quota no matter what time they consume the data. |

Those who don't get free PIPE have it go into their (larger) unmetered quota no matter what time they consume the data. I realise this, but I also realise that streaming video can quickly eat up that larger quota, especially if it's decent quality video :( |

as i understand it you go on your offpeak quota, not sure how much is counted either all or half, and yes streaming video does use a lot of quota |

I realise this, but I also realise that streaming video can quickly eat up that larger quota, especially if it's decent quality video :( The only ISP that it is offering it as Free is iiNet – and thats because they were heavily involved in hosting the files – and have expensive hardware in place to facilitate this. iiNet do not allow it as Free for the newly purchased sister company Westnet. The files are actually hosted on iiNets Akamai Servers. SPIN/COMCEN have allowances for PIPE data (of which iView comes through on – aka iiNet Network). No other ISP is offering iView as either unmetered data or off peak data (no matter when you watch it). Post with your similiar complaints have been popping up through EVERY ISP area and they have all been answered to death. Its the old case of wanting more for less. SPIN/COMCEN are able to offer quite a good set of plans that cover iView (by proxy – aka PIPE Data). Internode themselves are not even offering this as a free service – even though they used to offer ABC as Free. You can read more on this situation with some very informative posts through out here – /forum-replies.cfm?t=1019702 AuS |
