Just having a few problems in the past half hour or so. MSN will sign in (sometimes doesn't, and when the "troubleshoot" button is pressed, it gives an error for DNS), aapt's site will work, downloads full speed from the aapt speed test download, but NO other site will work bar google? As i type this though, sites seem to be loading half the time...
edit: all sites seem to be working now, but loading VERY slowly the first time the page is loaded... AAPT's test download, downloads at 160KB/s still...

Hey Guys,
There has been a problem in the network. Should be OK now, but you may need to powercycle your modem.
(Turn it off for five minutes. Turn it back on. If that doesn't work, try it again later. You could call the queue later – there's a bit of a wait just now.)
Apologies. We are trying to find out what went wrong.
Regards,
Bill

Yep.. Had the sme issue here this evening.
Adding an extra DNS server (4.2.2.2) fixed most of the issues for me. I think i'll leave it in place as a 3rd DNS server for whenever it happens again..

Problems are starting to reappear for me. Pings to most web servers have doubled in the last 15 minutes and I'm starting to lose connections on Windows Live Messenger and GTalk. I've got a hunch it's a DNS issue, websites I've been visiting tonight which have already been resolved seem to be the least affected. Websites I haven't visited in a while are timing out. Can't be the cache making them seem faster as I have it set to about 100kb.

If you were smart you would have called AAPT support to let you know of the outage if a powercycle didn't fix it, saving you time and unnecessary steps.

Still getting huge connection problems. Last night, I was giving some bs on the phone about a router being out, but this issue atleast for myself has been ongoing for a while now. Getting constant timeouts, huge pings, can't play any online games, have to refresh multiple times to even connect to a page. Wish Wideband would have Bpay and I'd with them tomorow.

Just did the speed test from the AAPT FAQ – get a constant 162KB/s which is normal.
Come on AAPT what is happening? What is wrong with the backhaul today?

Its DNS related. I can ping to 203.8.183.1 (AAPT's preferred DNS Server) but cannot ping to yahoo.com. It is not resolving correctly. One might also have email issues due to the same problem.

Still thinking 'bout giving them the flick anyway... Yep, last straw for me. Sign up was a mission. Courier company delivering the modem didn't answer their phone for 1 week after leaving a card. Modem had to be redelivered. Online usage tool is outrageously inaccurate. 1 hour plus hold times when calling for support on all the above.
I've tried really hard AAPT and been with ya for almost a year, but after a while...
Aussie sites are fine for me at the moment, google is patchy at best, etc. Anything offshore either takes 5 mins to load or won't load at all.

It looks to be a DNS issue only.
I'm in touch with some people I used to work with at AAPT to let them know of the issue. It looks like yalumba (203.8.183.1) and warrane (192.189.54.33) are not responding to DNS requests. Unfortunately for DSL and dialup people, these are the two same DNS handed out as part of your PPP settings
yarrina (192.189.54.17) is slow, but at least does resolve. You could use that if you wanted, but I'd set it back to getting DNS from PPP once everything is solved, because there are good reasons why they give you the ones that they do (ie. load balancers in front of the servers).

Gold Coast here, connection is absolute shit.
I've noticed that it gets very bad during rainy days over the last 2-3 months, and last time it rained a week ago (Surfers Paradise), I couldn't do anything online at all – it would lose connection and reconnect every 2 minutes. Today it's not doing that, but successfully loading any websites works about 20% of the times.
QUESTION: I've looked at the other thread, about alternative DNS servers which apparently help with this. Can someone please explain to me in layman's terms how I should go about changing my DNS servers to something? I'm on XP and have a SpeedTouch 5x6, if that helps.

I'm on a 1500/256 plan and have been having connection issues for atleast 3 months. Sometimes sites will load straight away, then next time you visit it takes ages if it doesn't return an error 'page cannot be loaded etc etc'
Have changed dns to opendns and this hasn't helped at all. Get good speed on everything else like torrents but websites is a diff story.. Any other things I can try?

That's DNS troubles for ya. Luckily torrents don't really rely on DNS. I've been trying about a dozen different DNS over the past few hours and I haven't had any great success with any specific address ever after flushing the DNS cache and rebooting the router. On the other hand if you can get stable torrent/ftp connections, might be a nice time to leach while everyone's getting frustrated and getting off the network :P
Edit:

Speaking of the AAPT site, anyone else having trouble logging in? Haven't been able to get in for about an hour now. "-This is not recognised" error. I'm assuming its for the password but it's the same password I've saved in Firefox for a fortnight. Tried manually in both IE and Firefox, no dice.

I dont like using OpenDNS for one main reason: * They dont have a DNS server in australia, All requests have to goto US or Europe, which tends to add about 200ms to each lookup – Not too much of an issue, but can make things less 'snappy' for general browsing if theres lots of traffic.
The DNS server i mentioned (4.2.2.2) is overseas as well (unfortunately) Buts its a easy number to remember for when DNS it out :) – Telstras DNS server 139.134.2.190 is generally pretty good and based in sydney, so no overseas lookups.

Preferred: 192.189.54.33 (warrane.connect.com.au 18ms. 2ms travel) Secondary: 203.8.183.1 (yalumba.connect.com.au 33ms. 9ms travel)
What you use is upto you.

Yeah sometimes the sites just wont load, but if you refresh it enough times it will eventually get there, the thing is there is no issue playing games ping wise as far as i can tell outside the normal discrepancies and spikes that are to be expected.
It is quite annoying tho, at 1st i thought it was something to do with our internal network until a friend said he had been getting something similar.

In theory, it isn't. There's a patch for bind available. It just happens to be that the new versions create a lot more load for the servers in question, and other sort of load related problems.
It's just not as straightforward as you think.

That's pretty much what I mean. On one hand you have people jumping on the security bandwagon and installing the patches in a panic without thinking of the extra load it's going to place on those servers.
On the other hand you have those that don't bother installing the patches and ignore the possible security consequences.
Neither really appeals to me :/
