ABC have just release their brand new iView service for all of Australia to enjoy. We've been playing with the beta version of it for a little while now and we really like it, so we've made it part of the iiNet Freezone. You can view all the content on iView quota free – right now.

Head to the Media Lounge and click on the ABC iView Link in the TV section:

http://www.iinet.net.au/my/media/mc-tv.html

What's on there?

Right now, the most recently aired episodes of BBC shows like The Bill and Doctor Who. Local programming like The New Inventors, The Gruen Transfer and ABC documentaries, arts programs, childrens cartoons and news.

All the video is at about 700kbps bitrate and requires Adobe FlashPlayer to view.

Enjoy!

Gorgeous interface, but struggling to maintain the stream on my 5.6Mbps connection. I'll try it again in a few hours, in case its related to load or an outdated flash player at my end.

EDIT – Fixed by the classic reboot trick, with everything now running at full speed.

Looking better than when in Beta. The fact that this is iiNet freezone is awesome.

However I was wondering if anyone else is getting this in some cases:

ABC iView doesn't require login anyway. ABC Playback did when it was in closed beta, but it definitely doesn't now.

Perhaps you need the login details to save a playlist, but as Ray says, that would definitely not be your iiNet login details.

Did you use the old ABC site when it was in Beta? That needed a login name and if you are still using that cached player that might be what's causing your problem.

Try clearing your cache and re-visiting the site.

I sync at 5mbps and mine jumps 0 – 26 – 58..., all loaded in about 5 seconds.

OK, at some point, possibly while I had the video paused to come here, it stopped recording it as Freezone altogether.

I'm more interested in the news and current affairs shows and this site has proven quite excellent for getting my fix of daily news.

The only problem is that flash video is extremely processor intensive and can make the browser unstable after extended use. I got a blue screen after watching the 7.30 report and 7.00pm news. Using Firefox 3, latest updates and Vista SP1. What is everyone else's experience?

iiNet are unmetering the ABC, and AFAIK they're the only ones to be doing so – and thats because they happen to have set up their customer edge network a little differently to others, and they have some (very expensive) additional hardware installed at their customer edge that is capable of doing unmetering at a deeper granularity than source IP address.

That wouldn't happen to be Cisco equipment, would it?

If it is, I guess you get what you pay for.

Well done iiNet again!

Good stuff guys. In the past, some of the stuff in Freezone has been fairly 'special interest', but access to this is good news for everyone.

Hats off to the ABC too. This is an incredibly slick implementation of online video. They're leading the way (by a long distance!) in this country with online TV. Its amazing what you can achieve when you don't have commercial concerns and shareholders hanging over your head ;)

Sets the bar for the other networks. They need to do something like this too, obviously with ads though.

Are you definitely using iiNet's DNS servers? Certain freezone content won't be counted correctly unless you are.

dns in the router is 0.0.0.0 which im guessing is an auto setting

status says – Primary DNS: 203.0.178.191 Secondary DNS: 203.215.29.191

and on your PC? A few cases where people have reported issues they have been running with another ISP's DNS server stored somewhere.

If your PC is set to Auto or hard coded to 203.0.178.191 you should be ok.

Hope I don't come across as being rude but he's one of a few people reporting additional usage outside of the free zone (myself included :p). I'm aware the techies are working on things though (from a whim by another iiRep) so I'll wait and see what comes out of it.

I think somethings not right though :)

Thanks for including iView in the Freezone – saw the article on the ABC news last night, checked out the site but was worried about impact on my d/l limits – worry not!

Best addition ever! Hopefully they keep full seasons of episodes up, wouldn't mind seeing last seasons episodes of Gruen Transfer. Can't wait for Chasers episodes too.

Now we only need SBS content (Top Gear FTW).

Thanks iiNet.

Greedy little buggers, aren't we? The ABC content is seriously good free content, yet soon as I hear 'Top Gear' I start salivating....

That's what surprised me as well. I only watched a single video, yet it still split the usage between quota and Freezone, with most going into quota. The sum of both figures was correct for the file size.

How awesome would this be if it could work on a PS3 and displayed on your TV! If someone can get it to work with a PS3 I would praise them.

Checked it out at work today and it's awesome, but I'm currently shaped and it's not ignoring the shaping like NASA TV and the other freezone content normally does.

Can someone from iiNet confirm if it's supposed to only work if you're unshaped?

Thanks!

Just tried this out and its awesome.

First NASA and now this..

It just keeps getting better.

Love the documentaries and Richard Morecroft's narration :)

If NBA came along OMG that would nail it for sure...

Can't you just use the PS3 web browser to browse to it? It supports flash doesn't it?

I am very happy with iiNet lately. Doing an awesome job really lifting the game!

Over time if you could add more channels, possibly sports like NRL games etc would be really great.

great service provider!

Well I'm currently shaped as well and it works a treat. Absolutely full speed!

I accessed iview through ABC's site thinking it would be crippled and was baffled why it detected my speed as being full, knowing that I was shaped. After running it, I checked my toolbox but I was still shaped, so then looked for any iinet news about it and discovered it had been added to freezone.

Thankyou iinet!!!!!!

And nice to know ii are so far the only ISP (according to the ABC website) that offer this in freezone. Well done ii!

Great freezone stuff there Iinet, a stupid but to me kind of neccessary question as I'm getting a more constant stream direct from the ABC site and I've noticed some folk have there usage there counted, do we need to use the iinet portal for it to stay in free usage of is it fine going direct to the ABC?

From the conditions of use Please note that although ABC iView is located in the iiNet Freezone, the ABC's other content is still counted towards your quota.

Which means that while it should be in freezone without using the portal they won't commit to it being free.

smart move for IINET ( in a long time.. ) well done !!!!
this is the way to promote local network content.
What we need is a solid local content provider and cheap access to these services.

this is the future.

The freezone portal just uses an iframe pointing to http://abc.net.au/iview ([sic] missing trailing slash — the iframe's src is wrong), but yeah, it could change in the future.

ABC have just release their brand new iView service for all of Australia to enjoy. We've been playing with the beta version of it for a little while now and we really like it, so we've made it part of the iiNet Freezone. You can view all the content on iView quota free – right now.

Wonderful!

I am a fan of Dr. Who but I often miss it. I have to download from internet which my young son says is not right. Now I can catch up!.

Well done iiNET.

BTW, can you save the streaming program from ABC. In particular some program from Australian story is good and inspirational.

I agree, it looks good. I was really surprised by that, I expected classic blocky low-res production but the ABC have done a grand job really.

Anyone worked out how long it takes the News to be updated, went for a look last night at 7pm but still the lunchtime news update?

re: iiGrover accessing via freezone as opposed to via ABC Site:

I'm not sure about this either, however I have only been accessing via freezone and from what I can see in usage; it hasn't added anything to my peak quota. I would stick to freezone just to be sure.

Thanks iiNet, great service.

It is very, very nice... especially in freezone!

Yowsa it munches some resources though! (This is watching the Einstein factor)

http://img410.imageshack.us/img410/1865/iviewresourcesbm9.png

That's on an e2160 @ 2.88ghz, firefox 3.01, vista64, 7800GT.

It plays back fairly nicely on my beefcake system – but I'm not surprised if it has issues on lower end ones....

Quite a lot of dropped frames on my HTPC (Athlonxp 3000+ / 1GB RAM / WinXP Pro / ATI 9600xt)
http://img136.imageshack.us/img136/6315/iviewathlonhd4.png

It definately needs some optimisation! I mean, 720p h.264 playback uses less resources when using CoreAVC.
