I noticed that a lot of ISP now days give you extra bonus quota for downloads at night. So I guess it must be cheaper for ISP at night, or summat. Anyway, if I try to limit my big downloads to night time where possible, will this be helping Adam out? Or will it not matter much because I am just one customer, just a drop in the ocean?

Basically, thre isnt the same amount of data happening overnight as there is during the day (peak and offpeak)
Basically, they are trying to influence their customers to use the link more at night so it can be more utilized, it is not cheaper in anyway for them, just they have lots more spare bandwidth as most people are sleeping and not awake and on their computers.
Adam Internet is one of a group of ISP's (also such as Internode) that provision enough bandwidth on their transit providers, that they don't need to run on peak/offpeak to get people to utilise it more at night and less during the day.

I hate the whole idea of peak/offpeak data. I like the ability to download what I want when I want, not to have to leave my PC on overnight just to download large linux ISO's.

Amen to that. You should be able to use the quota you have paid for, at what ever time and on what ever they want. Not at arbitrarily defined intervals, which is why I like Adam NOT having Off Peak / On Peak.

I noticed no one yet as answered your question, I believe the peak time for the internet would be about 8pm (People getting home from school/work and bored with nothing much on TV (especially recently (thank god its over) with big brother)) however it wouldn't benefit Adam Internet for you to stop downloading files around this time so to speak as much as it would other customers running on the same backhaul to the exchange (but these are probably monster links so should be fine anyway).
If you were on a RIM, it could possibly affect other users... especially if you were on the 8mbit ADSL1 on a RIM, but I would believe this is the only instance where it would make a difference (and a small one at that although every bit helps.)
I think if using the internet less at times would help Adam Internet, they would introduce onpeak/offpeak shaping. TBH I think they could help (even if temporarily) resolve the issue listed in other topics with slow speeds on the RIM's if they introduced Onpeak/Offpeak to people who are connected through a RIM however this would not be fair to those people connected through that type of infrastructure.
Still, thats my 2c. =]

i dont mind the idea... especially the tpg plan where you get 40 gig on and 110gig off for the same price that adam charge for 40. i have recently set up one of my mates on that plan just so i could get an idea on what they are like as an isp. i wouldnt want to leave an isp like adam for a shit isp even if i got an extra 110gig. even though adam have had their moments lately :-/

With fixed pricing and fixed limits, I don't see how leeching matters. It's all just standard service sold and advertised by Adam.
And I guess judging by these posts it doesn't matter to Adam when people download their Netflix movies or Linux discos. I'll just keep doing it in the day. I know electricity is cheaper at night, but my noisy computer keeps me up while I'm trying to sleep.
