Hi all, I guess if you're reading this you have had this problem with the Huawei modem. This is due to an incompatibility with Windows XP. I had the same problem, and this is how to solve it.

I used to have the old virgin modem (the rectangular one) and it used to drop out in the same way. Modem remains connected (constant light) but suddenly data stops coming through, and when i click "disconnect" the modem does not respond, and remains connected. After complaining multiple times to Virgin customer service, who were very un-useful as usual, I finally got a new virgin modem, the Huawei E220. Same problem occurred, except this time the new driver software actually displayed an error code "ERROR 1722... etc" You might also get errors in Internet Explorer that says has one of those "Send / Don't Send" buttons at the bottom, and after you click on it, IE shuts down. The details of the error will contain something about netapi32.dll, BEX, svchost.exe, etc.

This is all due to an incompatibilitty with Windows XP. Supposedly the post-SP2 update pack will fix it. But if you don't have that, I've found another way on the net after a painstaking search.

The solution: CLOSE PORT 445 and 135

How to close port 445:

Start Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) by clicking Start menu, and then click the Run icon.
In the small box that Opens, type: regedit then click the OK button.
The Registry Editor will now have opened…
Locate the following key in the registry:
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\NetBT\Parameters
In the right-hand side of the window find an option called TransportBindName.
Double click that value, and then delete the default value, thus giving it a blank value.

How to close port 135:

The you must now navigate to the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\OLE
You will see there is a String Value called: EnableDCOM
Set the value to: N (it should currently be Y)
Close the Registry Editor.
Shutdown and Restart your computer.

This fixed my computer and I have had no problems (in relation to this problem) since. That's not to say I don't have a million other complaints about Virgin Mobile. But we'll save that for another day.

Hope this helps some of you frustrated people out there. I know I was one of them. A lot of swearing went on in this house when it happened.

-Jim

p.s. to give credit to the guy whose page i found the solution on, here's the link

All you did is just closed two-years-old security hole in your XP, which has nothing to do with modem. I suspect you're full of troyans and viruses by now. Actually on unpatched XP it'll happen regardless of type of your connection to The Net. This particular modem is in fact incompatible with some CD burning utilities, but that's all.
